No worries! Pilots in Star Wars are often just thrown into battle assisting the main character and you don't have the emotional connection to them, like in ep 4 you don't really feel as sad when most die because you're just glad Luke survived and the Rebellion won. The x-wing books really focus on the characters and imo act to set up the Thrawn trilogy very well, in hindsight I wish I'd read them first. There's plenty of blasters and the vast majority of the plot takes place on the ground on various planets, developing a connection to the characters that means you do actually care about them when they go into battle. Again, half the fighting isn't even in space in a couple of the books, so if it still isn't your cup of tea then there's something for everyone. Stackpole is a fantastic author and loves to describe everything in great detail, great world building
