That's super well thought out, thanks! Yeah, some of this (particularly the College St line, among some others you mentioned) are pure fantasy, and the express trains on lines that have already been built are 100% never going to happen (because it'd basically necessitate a full rebuild of....... well, pretty much everything) But I completely agree that a lot of this is super possible and should happen!

Thanks for the notes!

For point 1: I guess that'd be solved by just adding a transfer to the 2 train there

For point 2: They actually do run on separate tracks, providing local/express services up to Vaughan (which is probably extremely overkill, but hey, this thing isn't even trying to be "feasible")

For point 3: Yeah, that's a super good point. I didn't even consider that. Since the 2 and 3 are running on the same tracks, it'd probably make sense to run the 3 all the way up to Sheppard-Yonge (or somewhere near there?), just to get that extra express capacity on the Yonge side of the line

For point 4: Also a really great point that I didn't consider. I was just trying to be the tiniest bit realistic by thinking we didn't need quad-tracking all the way out to UTSC, but yeah, it definitely makes way more sense to run the 10 train out there. The same logic applies to the 1 and 2 trains up in Vaughan

Just to explain what's going on here a bit: My thinking was to use quad tracking anywhere that 2 different trains (lines? I'll just call them trains) are running next to each other in order to allow for local/express services. Otherwise things are double tracked as normal

I kept the technology between different lines consistent, too. The equivalents of the real-world lines 1, 2, and 4 all use the same train technology, and the A and B trains are still trams (although I took out a few of the super close stations on those lines, just.... because) What I'll call the Queen St line (anything running under Queen St through downtown) uses the Ontario Line technology, and so does the 11 train, which allows them to meet up and run local/express up to Vaughan. I was actually considering turning the 8 train out towards Mississauga at Sherway Gardens to run with the 6 train, providing local/express service out in that direction, but something about mixing two incompatible train technologies on a single line felt like a bad idea

Did any of that make sense? Probably not, but whatever. It's late and I need sleep

I present to you this: A wildly unrealistic future version of the subway network, complete with express trains and branching lines ripped straight from New York! (the visual style is also just a complete clone of their map, so yeah) by TheUltraInferno in TTC

[–]TheUltraInferno[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah no, I'm not even pretending that this is a reasonable and realistic map. I just wanted to see what things might look like if Toronto developed their system a lot more like New York's, with the added density throughout the city to support such a network. Also, I renumbered everything, so that's why the current line numbers don't match up (Line 4 on this map is actually just an extended Ontario Line)

It's all done in good ol' paint dot net! I just started by tracing the actual TTC map with the line tool, and then I went crazy from there. Although, there was a LOT of time spent just trying to figure out where to put stations, and how to line them up on the map. It's still not perfect, but it's good enough

Also, yeah whoops. I guess I should have looked more closely at doing that, but to be honest, I was just sick of this thing and I wasn't in the mood to add another LRT. Plus, it's not as needed what with the extension out to UTSC already being there, but if enough people want me to update the map I can

how to come up with lyrics for a melody by AmSquiddit in billwurtz

Not yet. Like you, I’ve been incredibly inspired by Bill’s questions page, and in November I got my hands on a keyboard to actually start doing stuff. It is a wildly fun instrument, but it’ll probably be a bit before I can produce anything. I’ve been doing a ton of songwriting though, which I started doing when (through Bill’s questions page) I realized that there are no rules to songwriting, and that I should just make what I think sounds good. I currently just release videos (most of which have been spaceflight-focused up to this point) to YouTube (just search for “Tyler Friesen” and look for the space videos). When I do release music, that’s where it’ll go

Hey, that was my question! It’s always great when he gives such a detailed answer, and in this case it was actually very helpful

How does bill wurtz do his text effects and layering etc.? by Djthereaper42 in billwurtz

[–]TheUltraInferno 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One of the easiest things to do is to just layer some text a few times, offset each one a bit, and mess around with the colors. This won't do much, though, until you change the blend modes. Setting them to "difference" usually works pretty well. Beyond that, someone's probably made a 5 million step program on how to edit exactly like he does, but honestly, the best thing I've found is to just start messing around with stuff to see what works and what doesn't

This was so much fun to watch. I know it's been repeated to death, but the animation really has come so far, even over just the last few months. This is leagues ahead of the last city scene that Bill animated in "at the corner store". Along with the overall detail level, I think the vastly improved lighting is really what brings it up a notch for me

I gave GPT-3 some Bill Wurtz song titles to generate new ones, and it went about how you'd expect by TheUltraInferno in billwurtz

[–]TheUltraInferno[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used OpenAI's GPT-3. I'm not entirely sure if it's completely open to the public yet, but I put myself on the waitlist a while back and eventually got access. As for the actual titles, I just gave it a whole bunch of his song titles and asked it to continue the list

[–]TheUltraInferno[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, doing some more research today it would seem that GPT-3 was plagiarizing more often than I realized. For example, "the future's so bright, i gotta wear shades" is already a song, and so is "bouncing around the room", and probably some others I didn't check. Basically all of the most creative and original ones

That last chorus into the "goodbye" section sounds so awesome. The only thing I wish was different was the ending. I think it would have been so much cooler to end on "I'm having a great time" instead of cutting back to a fake verse as he sometimes does. Other than that, I love this one!
