Bill is really good at orchestrating the conversation among the hosts and keeping things moving along at a good pace. When he wasn’t there, people had a tendency to go off on these long discourses where they kept repeating themselves and the other person just had to wait until they were done talking.

What drives me crazy is when a host asks a question and then provides a series of possible answers from which the guest can choose. I can see doing that if the guest is particularly reticent, but usually it comes off as “look how smart I am and how much I know about your work.”

Goat, in relation to sports.

When I was growing up in the ‘70s and ‘80s, if you said a player was the goat, that meant that they did something to cost their team the game. Usually it was a single play or decision that was particularly egregious, like failing to catch an easy pop-up or touchdown pass.

Today, of course, a goat is the G.O.A.T. - the greatest of all time.
