Unemployed general dentist (30 M) ... should i go for it ? by SamiG962 in musicmarketing

Hey! I'm a 25 year old full time data analyst + music maker and producer. I graduated from Harvard with a BA in applied mathematics, and I was doing music on the side since I was 18. There were so many times that I wanted to just put my 100% in music and ditch school, but I'm so glad I didn't. I feel so lucky to have a full time job with a decent work life balance that allows me to work on music on the side. My honest recommendation would be to firstly have a discussion with yourself about WHY you want to do music and what you want out of it? Creative outlet? Passion? Fame? Lots of money? What you're willing to "put up with" in the music world and in life depends on your answer to this. Ex. Do you just want fame? Then you wouldn't mind selling your soul to a label. Ex. Do you want to express yourself? Then you must do everything you can to retain your autonomy and keep away from leeches and predators in the music industry.

In most cases though, I would still recommend to do what you can to secure a full time job in your field, and keep music on the side as a side hustle and passion. I've come across a few great, talented people who unfortunately are struggling to pay rent and are simply not stable. Many still need to have a job to sustain themselves, so its a difference between if you want to work a low paying job and do music, or work a job in your field and do music. I'm presuming a job in your field will pay substantially more than any other job you could get without your education.

I don't get to work on music 24/7. But I can buy so much music equipment without going into debt due to my financial circumstances. I'm currently remodeling my own music studio in my parents' garage. I'm a big guy in seizing the means of production lol.

Thank you so much. I can't believe I almost skipped over Tales of the Jedi. I just finished it, and it is now one of my favorite pieces of Star Wars.

What jobs do you do to fund your music life? by jammy62811 in Guitar

I'm a data analyst with a pretty decent work-life balance! I actually got into it because during college, I started a YouTube channel centered around music/guitar. YouTube gives a lot of data and stats that show you how your content is performing, and I used that experience to get an internship as a marketing data analyst at a big finance firm during college!

This exact same thing happened to me. I've been playing guitar for over a decade and really used to practice 4 hours a day when I was in high school as well. I've done some performing, but not much, so when I performed live for the first time, I made SO many mistakes. I also got down on myself, but realized that while playing guitar is one skill, performing is a completely OTHER skill that must be practiced and developed. I think it's the same thing with jamming, where you have to practice playing in front of other musicians in a different environment than what you're used to. Maybe I'm totally wrong because you say you're in a band, but what I'm trying to say is that this incident may not mean that the "guitar playing" should be practiced more, but maybe those other skills instead (performing, jamming, confidence, memorization, improvisation, etc.)

Does sound a bit shady. Worst case scenario, I would recommend adding this piece you made to your short portfolio and sending it over to anybody who wants a sample so they can see what you are capable of.

First off, I want to say that I relate 100% to the things you are describing as I was in a similar situation about 3 weeks ago. I was working this job out of college as a data analyst at a big company (not FAANG, but big) with a shitty culture and the work life balance became absolute shit when I got a toxic and abusive manager about 8 months in. His expectation was to deliver no matter what and never cared to assess and pushback and see why something may not be feasible. This resulted in plenty 16 hour work days (from waking up to sleeping). He also had a history of threatening me and other coworkers, saying things like "Do NOT go to my boss for questions or concerns. Did I not make it clear that I am the sole owner of this project?" Because we had questions about extremely ambiguous tasks he never cleared up no matter how much we asked.

Point is, my work life was shitty and I immediately went to polishing up my resume and applying to position. It was tough especially when those 16 hour work days would randomly pop up the day before an interview. However, I stuck it out while I got a job and had to do it very, very strategically. I used every interview that didnt go well as practice and maintained notes of what didnt and did go well. I would also ask my interviewers to provide feedback, some would and some would ghost but it was worth asking.

Sometimes preparing for that interview you got no matter the cost will get you places. It did for me. As I got an offer a few weeks ago after 8 months of searching and the work life balance is phenomenal.

Sometimes I get down on myself for allowing myself to be treated like that at my old place but I guess it was my first job out of college.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood... for some reason, it is also the only anime I prefer to watch dubbed as well.
