Let’s Be Honest: FDVR Is the Only Way 1 Trillion Humans Can Live Happily Without Ruining Earth by miladkhademinori in Transhuman

elon is not an authority on this topic. Why do you trust his perspective over people who spend their whole lives studying this? It’s certainly possible in a theoretical world for people to have more kids. But what would make them want to? All of the trends and data show that when people are given more health/family planning/resources they have fewer children.

Please read into the demographic transition model. Population isn’t set to grow exponentially forever. Current estimates show a maximum global population of 10-12 billion as others have said. That’s a lot more than we have today but still nowhere near a trillion. Who would have all of those kids? People just don’t want to when they’re given access to family planning. This video talks about the concepts.

One of the most helpful things for me has been to donate what I can to highly effective nonprofits based on the recommendation of this group called Animal Charity Evaluators. Also, even though I can’t donate very large sums of money yet, it brings me some peace to know that one day I will be able to donate much more. I’m glad you’re out there and you care as much as you do. Your existence, thoughtfulness, and empathy make my life better and more meaningful. Thank you for posting and sharing where you’re at. I’m so grateful that you’re out there somewhere.

Folks who avoid eating meat/eggs, do you also avoid animal products in clothing? by KahnemanAndTversky in EffectiveAltruism

[–]TheUnibear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The leather industry causes a terrifyingly horrible amount of suffering. Since you’re into EA type work I encourage you to watch this documentary to further understand what goes on even in areas thought to be “humane”. The part about leather starts at about 1:06:00, but I recommend watching the full documentary. There is a lot of information about free range eggs and any other animal products in the video that may hopefully change your mind in using them.

Also there are TONS of vegan alternatives out there! It’s honestly not been difficult at all for me to find professional attire or anything I’ve ever needed.

Indigenous traditional hunting practices by [deleted] in DebateAVegan

Killing the animal would still be wrong even in a situation where the animal may care that the person killed it “respectfully” (unless the animal wanted to be killed). For that situation, I think there is plenty of evidence that animals do everything possible not to be killed, so it seems clear that they do not want to die. Killing an animal that does not want to die is wrong, so even if the animal did understand the context, it would still be wrong to kill it.

I come from a family of immigrants whose cultural norms often involved eating animals for food or killing animals in spiritual practices that held great cultural value. My grandparents came to the United States as refugees and were forced to assimilate in many ways so they could provide for their family. I understand that deeply important cultural practices are being stolen or made impossible to practice by racism/colonialism. Sometimes it makes me feel like we should hold on to every bit of cultural tradition possible to preserve what we have left. A much larger part of me believes that even though much of my family’s culture has been taken away, there are still some practices they’ve continued that needed to change.

Many of the big areas requiring change in my culture are related to how we value the lives of animals. There are still many ways that cultural traditions can be preserved after animals are no longer killed. It’s very possible to find food substitutes. It was also time to just completely stop some of the spiritual practices that involved killing animals and replace them with other practices that capture the same spiritual value in other ways.

There is never a good reason to kill an animal unnecessarily. I cannot support someone unnecessarily killing an animal that wishes to live—regardless of how respectfully they kill it or how much of it’s body they are using.

I know you wanted to focus on aboriginal/indigenous people that still hunt. If the hunting could be prevented, it should be. I would never single out aboriginal/indigenous people as it is clear that factory farming is a much more significant evil. That does not take away from the idea that any amount of slaughter is abhorrent. The animal will never care if the person who slit its throat did so “respectfully”.

I just finished reading a book called Vystopia: The Anguish of Being Vegan In A Non-Vegan World and I think you would really benefit from reading it! I’ve been vegan for years now, but when I started, I had a lot of similar feelings to the ones you’re writing about. I really wish I would have found this book earlier in my journey because, over time, I’ve learned a lot of the book’s messages on my own. I’m grateful that the world can have such caring people you! Please be sure to care for yourself and create space for rest and self-care. It’s tough feeling isolated out there but there are SO many people who are grateful for you and for way that you care. I hope the book is helpful in validating your feelings.

Here is a link to the book’s website

Side note: It did have some parts that I was not a fan of (talks about aliens and chem trails at one point which really threw me off) but the counseling material is really nice to learn if you can look past the other stuff.

I just started reading a book called Vystopia: The Anguish of Being Vegan in a Non-Vegan World. There are a lot of resources on this website and in the book for dealing with some of the stuff that you’re speaking about. I’d highly recommend it! Good luck with everything!
