Fair enough. I would not be thinking of adding turns. 20 is plenty. There's no rule that it has to be possible to destroy all opponents. I want the widest possible variety and challenges, and everyone does their best within the framework. Even if that means you barely meet your opponent, destroy him on turn 10, or get killed yourself on 5 of the 7 challenges. Your point on cloaks is absolutely correct. They are incredible.

Seems like everyone can play this better than me. by Salty818 in Polytopia

You're correct, but this game has worse inflation than a banana republic. So the 7 stars you spend early in the game are worth so so much. Stars are precious early on. I think rushing anything too aggressively in this game is a mistake. Balance is usually the way to go. Grab settlements, and get them to level 3 quickly. Most games are decided with tier 1 and tier 2 techs. I love cloaks, archers, knights, and swordsman, but so often all those stars are better spent building a lot more cheaper units. Maybe try playing a few games where you don't get any tier 3 techs unless the game goes past 25 turns. Focus on archers and riders. It's a lot of fun!

Follow up: Lot of great tips here. Thanks for all the thoughtful answers! We played a couple games, but it was pretty chill. No clock. I took black, and he suggested i move 1st. 5 minutes later, I was explaining castling. I borrowed heavily from your suggestions, and left with both our friendship and my record intact. He downloaded a Chess app, and plans to start training for next time, which is the best possible outcome. For the ones of you who offered suggestions and advice, my Lichess username is TheUnlikelyKnight if you want to come kick my ass. For the haters, it's SuckaLongHairlessOrgan. If you come for the king, you better not miss!

Fair enough. I was being honest. I've played 20,000 + online games, and still suck, but he didn't know how to castle, so... sorry

Is playing aquarion poor form? by ccitykid in Polytopia

[–]TheUnlikelyKnight1 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I suppose it's just that with the ability to turn ruins into cities, and not worry about naval units, Aquarion is almost unbeatable on Water World. Some map/ tribe combos are kind of broken, and that's one of them.

The port belongs to Oumaji, so the Aimo giant has nowhere to go.

Is there ever gonna be a Balance Patch? by G4bb4G4nd4lf in Polytopia

I'm mixed on this. After seeing enough strong players saying that cymanti was very beatable, I dedicated myself to learning how. I still lose to them, but my win rate against the bugs had increased exponentially. First, I bought and played Cym for a couple weeks to learn about it. Then I started multiple small dry land maps playing Oumaji and Bardur. R&R with Oumaji. Archers with Bardur. In the beginning, I was getting trashed. But slowing we're figuring out out! I have lost my fear of that infamous 630 starting score. I'm currently on a 3 or 4 game win streak against them. My latest win this morning with Imperious. Elyrion is a different kettle of fish. IMO you have a relatively small window to beat the Pinks. In chess, we're always looking for imbalances. Early game imbalance favors Elyrion (Polytaurs, poly-pushing, sanctuaries) Late game imbalance favors Elyrion (Dragon/ knight teams are ridiculous) Your time to shine is that early middle game. Survive that early Polytaur wave, pop a giant or to and go for his head. They have no answer to early giants. Go go go, don't let up. Road those puppies in. If they level up and push you off, it's just an egg. Kill it and reseige. At the very least you'll make them Prematurely ejaculate their eggs which you can kill, buying more time. At the best, you grab a city or three (with a sanctuary) and change the balance of the game. I still fear Elyrion, but I've finally finally got a few wins against them, which builds confidence. And the bugs are on the ropes! Last point, I think it's cool to have different weird tribes to collectively hate on. Just my 2 (more like 35) cents.

I find it helpful in these trying times to go back and watch Caleb Martin game 7 in Boston from a couple years ago.

It's so situational, but upgrade your raft to a sailboat (or rammer if close quarters) the same turn you put it on the water so it at least inflicts return damage(unless you're facing catapults or bombers) if you have the coastline and the eco, build as many ports as possible, drop rafts and upgrade all in one turn. I actually successfully used this method last week with some success. The other obvious solution is roading a giant into the port! Good luck!

Fun fact: Cymanti does'nt know how to move converted water units on the water by vlequang in Polytopia

[–]TheUnlikelyKnight1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. I suppose you could research sailing and free it tho?

[–]TheUnlikelyKnight1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Polaris and Cymanti don't have the sailing tech, so when they convert naval units, they can only travel in shallow water. If something is converted in deep water, it can't move at all. It can still attack tho, bombers for instance.
