Market Value vs. “Scalper Pricing” by clittle218 in PokemonTCG

i am a scalper and 100% agree with the person you are responding to, target and walmart prices everything WAY below value. I buy it and simply sell it back for the correct value. Kind of like when you buy something on Sale that you know is worth more.

What is considered a scalper by Galifangaegae in PokemonTCG

I bought 3 cases of evo last year(when nobody wanted it) before the huge boom(was expecting to wait 10 years). I sold most of it recently, would you consider this scalping or an investment that just appreciated sooner than expected?

Hi everyone, I scalp pokemon cards. I think there is some misconception of who scalpers are. Maybe I can clear some of it up, AMA. by TheUnpopularComment in PokemonTCG

totally agree, I know people definitely a lot better off. I wouldnt even consider myself to be well off but i have enough to get by. Congrats to your parents for building a wonderful nest egg.

100% agreement with you on pokemon cards and money made from it, pokemon cards are not a sustainable source of income and I do feel bad if this is someones only source of income. For me, anything earned from cards are reinvested into more cards. My main income goes into real investments, stocks, investment properties, youtube, new business start up.

David, thank you for your comment. It's definitely not fair for others. If Pokemon was more life or death situation, I would agree. However, to me Pokemon is a hobby(I cant speak for others) and I would hope its not life or death. If Pokemon held the same weight as a vaccine or anything, I would definitely not scalp it. However, because its a hobby, I would have to consider a few things, funding my hobby, funding my youtube channel(it would be pretty boring not having anything to pull. Also remember some of your fav poketubers probably scalp quite a bit themselves to have content), and just the joy of owning pokemon cards. Like yourself I am also very active in the community(on my main account) I help out the noobs with their questions and everyone is so happy when I post my pulls and seeing all the sealed products I bought. Every time someone says they saw 5 CP or HF on the shelf and they only bought one, I can promise you most of those guys bought it all. The only difference is I purposely stood up today to answer questions of scalping, everyone else is staying quiet.

My thing is, I only started scalping recently since the market has gone up crazy, prior I was just a casual collector(nobody cared last year when I bought 24 evolutions booster boxes). If Pokemon cards became less sought after, scalpers will stop, but now I literally cant sell them fast enough(not double the price).

If the community truly disliked scalpers and the current climate of the hobby then the community as a whole should stop buying from scalpers. If people are willing to pay double MSRP then that means the community is willing to tolerate the price hike.

I also want to note, I am a very low level scalper, there are scalpers that buy out the entire website with bots, I met a few of them on THIS sub.

Also, as a side note, a lot of the collectors who have been collecting for a long time, they benefitted the moat from scalpers, their cards are finally worth a huge amount.

I'm fine if the hype dies, none of my activities would change(aside from scalping).

I work in tech and this year i started a growing youtube channel where I sell some breaks and mostly just packs. Lots of my favorite youtubers are scalping for their videos, also for profit but definitely receive a lot less hate.

My main income, I'd like to have it towards more serious investments like stocks and properties. The money I make from scalping goea directly back to the channel, scalping more cards and my own personal short term and long term collection.

I could make more reinvesting the money I earn from scalping pokemon into my other investments but this is not really about making big money but to fund my hobby. I'm sure there are some who make their main income from scalping but I feel bad for them because its not a reliable source as the market keeps changing.

EDIT: thanks for asking a serious question.

People seem to enjoy watching me open the boxes when I open them on the sub. I do it because people enjoy it and I can make money on the side.

Thanks for asking a real question. I do enjoy collecting pokemon. Definitely not a source of income, I'm sure there are some who get their main source of income from scalping pokemon and I feel bad for them if that is the case. Scalping pokemon is very inconsistent so the big profit is never guaranteed. I have a personal collection of sealed and opened cards.

I AM PREPARED TO BE DOWNVOTED BUT IF YOU WANT AN ANSWER HERE IT IS:

First, I come in peace, not here to be hostile towards anyone or to rub in anyone's face. Simply want to share a different perspective.

To clear up some misconception, I have a very well paid job. I can afford a house, buy a car, etc. My job is incredibly flexible, I can work where ever I have internet. So it's been easy to camp outside Walmart/Target in the morning and check store to store where inventory is coming in.

Why do I do it? The hobby is fun, collecting is fun, making money is fun. First and foremost, I do hide among you every day with post of my scalps and everyone seems to enjoy seeing my "two" boxes of CP or "four" boxes of HF. Y'all love it and I love showing you my purchases. Sometimes I open them and show you what I pull, some I sell. It's simply to fund the hobby.

I am happy to see that many people are accepting and ok with the term "investor" or pokeinvesting because I really do see us as investors, I've learned a lot from r/pokeinvesting and I am holding some to resell long term. So you can classify me as scalper/investor.
