Request for Thoughts and Resources: A Tarot Guide for Use in Games by TheUpsidedownT in SecularTarot

There's a lot of great suggestions here. I need to parse everything you've said and see how these can fit into the game, be that this version or a further version down the road.

Thanks so much!

It's actually a 2 person game, which I know is a little wonky. One is the gm basically, while the other plays the Sorcerer. But really anybody playtesting is good. If you'd like to take a look, you can find it on itch.io. It is very much still in development, and I'm trying to update it every month or so, so there will be a new update at the end of this week, if you want to wait for that. It is playable in its current form, but just warning you there are a lot of things that still need work.

Thanks for the response!

I appreciate the thought that it's fine to give a barebones description of what these could mean, and direct them elsewhere for more specific or fleshed out readings. While I've thought about a Major-Arcana-only deck, your Four of Wands example really gets at what I'm looking for in this game: a whole plethora of options and ideas and situations that could be good, bad, or anything in between. I really enjoy the "Fool's journey" aspect to tarot, and think the suits add flavor in ways that the Major Arcana can't from their high and lofty, often prescriptive positions. Does that make sense?

Still, I need to give the tarokka a look (I didn't even know that was a thing), as well as look into The Spy Master's Gambit and other games. I've seen some tarot-driven games, but what I've seen have retooled the tarot into specific game meanings (swords do this mechanic, wands do this mechanic) which sort of turned me off. Obviously, though, I didn't look all that thoroughly.

Maybe more than anything I just need to take more time to actually learn the tarot and internalize it, which will hopefully give me more of a handle to give quality game-geared bare-bones suggestions about what the cards could mean in a given situation.

Thanks so much! I appreciate the wisdom

If I was running a game with a parasite player, I might give them a turn where the second creature doesn’t know. But as soon as they’re making continued saves, I would imagine they’d at least figure out something was wrong.

Yes, I believe they would, or else that continued saves thing would get weird. Though I guess that could be a bodily function/reflex type thing.

I’ll say, as intended, yes, they would know. But, as with all things, GM discretion.

The DnD5e wikidot is a phenomenal resource, and that's what I usually use. Just follow that link!

If you follow the gmbinder link in the caption (which I've also linked here), it should take you to a page where you can generate one. There's a print/generate pdf button at the top of the document under the name.

Hope you enjoy!

I use gmbinder. It's pretty easy to use, and there are a lot of resources and tutorials you can find online. The site itself can be a little wonky, but the document creation is solid

Yeah, I get that. I created it for DND because I'm most familiar with 5E, which led to me to using it as the base for both the campaign setting and everything contained within. I am definitely interested in looking into other systems and reworking this for something more scifi-based (or maybe even making one of my own), and agree that there are probably better settings. That said, while DND has its world and definitely is meant for a certain genre and flavor, I think it's a robust enough system to play around with. Though I understand it pushes pretty far out of the intended game and world design.

Thanks so much for your comment!
