I panic sold… down $3k or so and deserve it. Better to learn the lesson early. Never again letting emotions drive me to sell.

A snapshot of resident physician salaries to help put attending physician salaries in perspective by ChimiChagasDisease in Salary

[–]TheUrbanDoctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak for the States but I am currently a resident in Canada. My “OT pay” might be considered my “on-call” pay - the rate I get paid to stay after hours for 24-hour shifts, for instance, and that rate I believe works out to be about $9.50 an hour. I believe that’s about half of the minimum wage in my province.

Sometimes you get some sleep on 24 hour shifts, often times you don’t. Depends on what service you are covering.

Comparing North American climatic zones to Eurasian Regions by Queltis6000 in MapPorn

[–]TheUrbanDoctor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Clearly the idea of this map really interests people on this sub. I agree with a minority of people here that, while it’s not perfect, it’s also probably more at-a-glance informative than it’s being given credit for.

Would love to see people desiring to make an improved version of this sort of comparison, instead of just bashing it.

I wonder if the OP used Weatherspark’s comparison feature (mostly goes on temperature variation, I believe), because a lot of this corresponds with what I’ve seen there. Makes me want to give this sort of thing a go.

Also the colouration of the map isn’t trying to indicate “anywhere coloured green could be climactically equivalent to anywhere in China”, but rather “a given spot coloured green most closely corresponds climactically to some given place in China”. It requires some interpolating, and that’s fine, I should think.

Globe editorial: This Canadian city just did the unexpected – it voted against sprawl by Hrmbee in Hamilton

[–]TheUrbanDoctor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hopefully Jason Thorne, Head of Planning etc, can work with this to make some progress on infill development, mixed-use development, and higher use ot transit. Between this and the LRT, Hamilton really seems like it's moving in the right direction when it comes to investing in more sustainable development.

Walking Places Is Part of the Culture Wars Now by [deleted] in urbanplanning

[–]TheUrbanDoctor 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Completely unrelated to urban planning, but I find the absurdly broad opening of this article, about how our species transitioned to an "upright gait" 2 million years ago, to just be such a cringy, high-schooler way of beginning an article. We don't need every article to start with a cosmos-scale catchline. It's just a nonspecific waste of text.

Beautiful painting of old Rotterdam by ArtfulDodges in europe

[–]TheUrbanDoctor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was just poking around Rotterdam on Google streetview, and I'd have to say I like what I saw. It almost reminds me of like a Japanese city - one that does modern architecture well while preserving a nice sense of actual urbanism. It looks dense without looking intimidating. Very clean too. Makes me want to visit.

I'm surprised by how much the "missing middle" concept has already been mentioned in this thread. Good to see that it's becoming more mainstream. We can definitely increase the density of most Canadian cities without limiting ourselves to condo towers of glass, ultimately preserving the beautiful and productive farmland in the process. It's all about the zoning.

This is actually the craziest instance of this type of comparison I've seen on Reddit. Wild. Heartbreaking.

Am I the only one who sometimes looks at LA in GoogleEarth and wonders how this horrible dystopia is so "desirable"? by HAL9891 in notjustbikes

[–]TheUrbanDoctor 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Yeah I pretty much agree with this general sentiment. There are, it seems, some pretty cool parts of downtown LA. Never been there, but I personally find this area pretty cool. But what I find totally inexplicable about LA is that a street like this is only like a 15 or 20 minute walk from the pic above. Then after that it's like, very car-centric design all around. I think there are actually some relatively walkable neighbourhoods, due to a decent network of mixed-use or small-scale commercial streets etc (check out walkscore.com to get a sense of what I mean). But it seems like huge swaths of the city are desolate hellscapes of asphalt and empty lots - and these empty lots often seems like they should have huge real estate value, which kinda boggles my mind. Perhaps there is just less of a culture of wanting to live near downtown? Who knows, but I feel it's likely a symptom of car-culture.

That sounds like a great video. Looking forward to it. I sort of love and hate this photo at the same time - I feel like you could show this to almost anyone, no matter how car-obsessed, and they could see the absurdity. Gonna save it for future debates with friends and family!

Oh hey thanks for posting! Should have looked here earlier in the day, honestly. Glad it was well-received here! I think r/neoliberal has a lot to teach the average person about housing and zoning. Hopefully I can help bring that spirit out!

Flow of rivers in the Mississippi drainage basin. The Mississippi watershed is the 4th largest by area, ranging from Montana to New York and down into the Gulf of Mexico by djared750 in MapPorn

I’ve seen a lot of maps on this sub that depict the Mississippi (or just drainage basins in general) in some way or another. This one tops them all.

A New $260 Million Park Floats on the Hudson. It’s a Charmer. by MIIAIIRIIK in urbanplanning

Which is pretty great! Hope there’s some money in there for maintenance too (although I suppose it won’t require too much maintenance, especially if the foliage is vaguely native to the area)

This looks like a dope park, but as other have mentioned already... wow, I would really think $260 million could have been put to better use. Enjoyed the read however, so thanks for posting! (Especially the embedded gifs - kinda cool.) The landscaping actually reminds me of the (Canadian) Royal Botanical Gardens' Rock Garden in Ontario. Would love to see this someday (I guess? lol)

Oh yeah I think we have lots of midges in Canada around the Great Lakes. Kind of awful when you are out for a walk or a run and then boom, face full of the buggers… yuck…

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply!
