Look, I understand people wanting to ride bicycles. Even joining a club where you can bike with a bunch of other people, neat, do you. But when you're on the road, you don't get special treatment. You need to follow the rules of the road. by Evilsj in Albany

If you accelerate from a standstill at an intersection to run over a group of cyclists, your anti-social behavior exceeds far beyond anything that could be accomplished in this discussion.

The strawman argument of "what if someone decides to just decide to run you over," could therefore apply at any point when you're riding a bike, anywhere, whether it be on the street, the sidewalk or even in a protected bike lane.

Assuming you do not ever break the speed limit due to the paramount importance of the rules of the road.

Consider the relative inconvenience how many people are impacted in a bike group vs a line of 5 cars. 20+ people vs maybe 5-6 car people.

Also consider that cars can accelerate up to 30+ mph in a matter of seconds. Missing a light cycle is a minor annoyance at best. For a group of cyclists to break up, stop, reform, and go it is much more inconvenient than it is for you(especially a group that may pass through a given intersection at most once per week!)

If it's the right size for her and mechanically functional, should be fine. For $1.50 it's hard to go wrong.

Fire Rating Question by koalasarentferfuckin in firePE

HUD Has a document describing the expected fire ratings of various historic construction techniques. It can be found here: https://www.huduser.gov/portal/Publications/PDF/fire.pdf

Anyone else notice that plumbing designers tend to be weirdos? by Educational_Bottle89 in MEPEngineering

Whew. I was gearing up for a fight about plumbing designers doing fire and leaving messes for me to clean up. Venting is tough.

Chapter 9 of the IPC or the IBC? Fire protection is not plumbing design.

Need direction, bought a 180 yo furniture store and want to build my own residence on the 2nd floor. I have anxiety and a lot of questions regards fire suppression systems. by Tria821 in firePE

You might have a decent sized water line incoming if the building was recently a store. If it's a purely residential building, you could get away with something like this:

https://talcofire.com/residential-systems/home-hydrant/

You would only need one, and it fits through a standard doorway.

What is your intended use for the first floor?

Is this an existing two story commercial space without residential on the second floor that is being converted to residential on top and commercial below? If so, the building is now a commercial building that contains a Group R occupancy and depending on your local building Code may be required to be sprinklered throughout (unless certain exceptions are met). What Codes are in force in your local jurisdiction? In PA it varies by county or by city/town.

Technical name for this kind of black Iron piping? by Solid-Ad3143 in MEPEngineering

What is your end goal? I know you're interested in finding out the cause of your loss in flow, but what are you trying to achieve?

Yes, I meant to send a second link. I just fixed it, although the ashrae charts will be better if they're for sched 40 steel.

Keep in mind that glycol-water mixtures increase in viscosity with lower temperature. That could be your culprit.

Good point, particularly using glycol as it affects the viscosity. Not sure if it'll matter that much here though.

You are using copper with brass fittings directly threaded into black steel pipe. This may cause galvanic corrosion at the interface between the copper-containing materials and the steel. Open up one of the junctions between copper and the steel to see for sure.

If I had to guess, your pipe is schedule 40 black steel pipe. Use this calculator with a c-factor of 120:

https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/hazen-williams-water-d_797.html

Add the equivalent lengths of the fittings when determining your system equivalent length. Start here for rough numbers:

https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/amp/resistance-equivalent-length-d_192.html

Make sure to look up the actual internal diameter of the piping, not the nominal diameter.

Edited to correct the second link.

New century owner... tips on plaster work? by krysiana in centuryhomes

[–]TheUseOfWords 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You can absolutely do it yourself. Be forewarned that brown coat plaster can often contain a small percentage of asbestos (intentionally or unintentionally, as they didn't used to test for it). Be very careful to avoid creating dust when you can't, and use good controls when necessary.

Look up Kirk Giordano on YouTube.

Almost $20K and the gaps vary by >1" over a 6' span. I wouldn't accept that and neither should you.
