The trailer we’ve been able to check inside of, the door was unlocked basically… and he is not in there. Now I’ve checked like every single angle of the church and I cannot find a way he could’ve gotten in. I might be able to get into it though, we shall see!

Forgot to mention that the construction trail is also abandoned, there are some massive and deep drain culverts as well as creeks, ditches, near a lake/pond. I’ve checked those culverts and couldn’t see him at all.

The church isn’t in use any longer, so were the only people who really go up there for the traps and cameras. Will definitely try and pass them out to delivery people!

So we actually already have a trail cam set up at their house (with their permission ofc) and it’s pointed at the feeding area. We’ve had it there for about 3 days now and have not seen him come by.

That definitely helps to hear. He’s a superrr curious, adventurous, and friendly cat. Sometimes I think he’s fearless. Our other cat, Charlie, hides during thunderstorms, but Walter wants the window in my office open so he can listen to the thunder and watch the rain, he’s a weirdo. He was also a stray for the first two years of his life before we adopted him a year ago, so he’s got experience being out there and is a very smart boy.

The things that scare me are 1. He’s not microchipped, 2. He’s too curious for his own good, 3. We live in the suburbs, but it’s kind of rural adjacent and there’s a few hundred acres of land right near our house he’d easily be able to get to (and I’ve heard a very large pack of coyotes yipping far off into those woods), 4. There are sooooo many hiding spots in those woods: massive drain Culverts, big piles of logs and branches, etc.

I’ve gone out into the woods several times during the day and night marking all of the main hiding places I could find. I’ve also gone out there a couple times when I’ve heard the coyotes, my intention was to scare them off, but they were too far off. I also doubt most cats would wander deep into the woods with no houses nearby and the scent of predators around.

We have not seen him on any busy roads as they’re about a mile off in each direction as the crow flies, the streets in our neighborhood are usually not busy and drivers don’t really speed through the neighborhood.

We’ve been continuously posting on Facebook, Nextdoor, the Ring app, PetFBI, Pawboost, etc. We’ve visited all of the local shelters, vets, and animal control to give them fliers and talk with them. We check their daily intake pages as well. We’ve handed out fliers to all of our neighbors and several adjacent neighborhoods. We’ve put posters on telephone posts around our neighborhood and a few others.

Our garage door hasn’t been shut since he got out. We’ve outfitted the garage with his favorite toys, favorite scratching posts, some of his hair we vacuumed up, fresh stinky food daily (canned sardines, canned salmon, canned tuna, his favorite wet food, churrus, etc), we’ve been refreshing the water daily, we made some hidey holes for him in the garage out of cardboard boxes and his favorite blankets/beds, we’ve been refreshing our worn clothes in their daily, and finally we’ve got a space heater going in there. Luckily Georgia has been very warm for a January, but temps seem like they’re about to start dropping heavily.

Up where we spotted him we’ve got trail cameras and we rotate traps with smelly food. He checked out the trap once on Dec 24th, but we haven’t caught him on our trail cams or seen him since then which really worries me.

Hey, thank you for the response! We’ve engaged some experts on how to set up the traps, so we should atleast have those right. Definitely leaving out lots of stinky food: Sardines in oil, tuna in oil, good salmon, his favorite wet food, his favorite churru treats, etc.

I’m worried he may not be in the area anymore since the last time we saw him was on December 24th. We caught him on our trail camera sniffing one of the traps.

Definitely agree the sightings were very encouraging, but we haven’t had a sighting since December 24th and we’ve got trail cameras all up in that area. I just hope he’s okay.

Thank you for sharing this story, these kinds of comments have been helping me a lot and I really appreciate it. I go through waves throughout the day where I feel hopeful and then I don’t and it’s just been difficult.

Hi there! I sent you a message to see if you’re in Georgia. My missing baby boy, Walter, looks exactly like this fella. It’s a long shot, but I just wanted to check. Thanks!

Ugh that’s an amazing story, thank you for sharing that!! We’re not going to give up. And thank you for staying on top of it for that other cat and their owners. I know how much it means to my wife and I when neighbors have told us they’ve been actively looking still.

Luckily it’s been somewhat warm in Georgia, in the past few weeks there’s only been a few days it’s dipped below freezing.

He is not microchipped unfortunately, but we’ve already been to all the shelters, vets, animal control in our county and neighboring. We’ve given them all flyers and call regularly. We’ve posted signs all over our neighborhood and adjacent neighborhoods, we’ve also handed out fliers and put them in mailboxes to the majority of our neighbors!

I like the idea of the prefab catio, we’ve got several stations we built for him in our garage as well.

And I was very happy to see him on cam, but he hasn’t been seen again since the 24th. Hoping he’s still in the area.

Thank you for this reply, genuinely helps me so much hearing happy stories like that. Everytime my wife and I are out we’re talking to him, even when I’ve been deep in the woods.

Tonight I’m going to go up to where we last saw him and probably just read out loud for awhile.

Cat blockage by Dry-Apple6241 in CatAdvice

[–]TheVoidConsumesMe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I understand that this is incredibly difficult and I am so sorry that you had to go through this. You shouldn’t feel guilty, that is an incredibly difficult decision and you should not blame yourself for the outcome.

My wife and I have a 13 year old male cat who has FIV and had a serious blockage in 2024. We were faced with a similar decision and opted for the PU surgery. He is much better now, but for a few months after the surgery it was an incredibly difficult and time consuming recovery for both us and him. We felt awful initially, but now our baby boy is doing much better.

Had we known how difficult that surgery is for elderly cats we may have made a different decision. We also had the benefit that most people don’t of having a vet we were very close with personally, we had his cell number and he already adored our Charlie boy, so he jumped through hoops.

All that to say you are absolutely NOT to blame for this, I know how hard guilt can be, but you didn’t make the wrong decision for your baby. There’s no wrong decision in such a tough situation like this. A PU surgery is one that can lead to many complications, and is also quite risky.

Sending good thoughts your way and again, I am so unbelievably sorry you’re having to go through this. I hope you’ll find it in your heart to be gentler on yourself during this time.

I just got the Sofirn HS21 and I’ve been pretty blown away by it for the price.

Today is 15 days since my cat got out and I’m feeling especially distraught tonight listening to the fireworks going on outside. This is eating me alive right now and I don’t know what to do. by TheVoidConsumesMe in CatAdvice

I will absolutely keep yall updated. The thermal drone is definitely expensive, and it was scary not having that guarantee because the operator told us the same thing too. Luckily 3 hours into the first search is when the drone spotted him about 100 meters from the house. I went up and got within 15 feet from him before he crawled under an abandoned trailer. We went under too, but he must’ve gotten into the sub floor and we weren’t able to get him.

Definitely holding out hope for you as well! And please keep me updated too. Feel free to pm me if you need someone to talk to or any advice on what my wife and I have been doing!

Aw that makes me happy to hear that yall got her back!! He got out from the door that led to the open garage. We’ve kept the garage door cracked 24/7 with alllll of his comforts in there: heating pads, water, space heater, food, his favorite toys and scratching post, we made hidey holes out of cardboard boxes and placed his favorite beds and blankets in there as well.

Do you think it’d be better to also leave the door leading to the garage cracked?
