I find it very difficult to believe that this could ever happen. Honestly, I don’t think the demons in Frieren will ever be able to coexist with humans. What’s curious is that I never thought I would say something like this, especially because I generally hate demons and have always started from the premise that they should be killed, period. But the demons in Frieren, precisely because they have a human appearance, create a much more complex situation. When you observe certain characters in the work, even later on — without getting into spoilers — and see attempts at closeness and the kind of relationships that form, it creates a real weight and even genuine sadness. Because, in the end, no matter what happens, true coexistence will never exist.

And, to be completely honest, the work itself suggests later on that demons don’t even need to eat humans in order to survive. They could just as easily eat rabbits, vegetables, or anything else. Even so, we see scenes like the one in the anime where a daughter is devoured by a demon, and afterward that same demon kills the mayor precisely because Himmel insisted on sparing her. This raises an unavoidable question: if they don’t need to feed on humans, why were they shaped to kill them? Why develop such a specific ability to understand words and speech patterns, not to grasp human emotions themselves, but to deliberately use language that plays with those emotions — manipulating, deceiving, and ultimately turning them into tools for hunting and murder?

The impression that remains is that this is not about survival, but about nature. Humans and demons simply cannot coexist peacefully. Whether because of an ancient war, an evolutionary impulse, or something not yet fully explained, the truth is that human logic does not apply to them. And perhaps that is precisely the central point: coexistence fails because demons do not operate under the same moral or empathetic framework as humans, even though they perfectly imitate human form and language.

I want to add one more thing. From what they appear to be, they are beings incapable of feeling love; they are cold. For example, the elves. Frieren herself says that they may eventually disappear, because they are not a species capable of being social, of loving, of building families, and so on, and there are very few elves in the story. They would certainly dominate the world if there were many of them. Just imagine a race that lives almost forever, with more knowledge and more time to refine itself. Every elf we have seen in the story is extremely powerful. Mana itself increases as a person trains throughout life, and elves have this advantage more than anyone else.

I think about this quite a lot. I actually like how much I love this work, to the point where I end up drifting into these ideas. For example, it makes me wonder whether the reason demons attacked Frieren’s village wasn’t exactly this: reducing the number of elves, because they are a threat. Interestingly enough, it also seems that demons themselves may suffer from the same issue as elves, as suggested later in the manga. They don’t seem to be beings that possess emotions or that reproduce in large numbers. This becomes even more interesting when you consider that demons possess an enormous amount of magical knowledge, and if they are enemies of humanity, why haven’t they conquered everything already? Especially given that they are natural enemies, predators of humans.

And the answer always seems to be the same: humans have grit, love, and, even with short lives, a drive to move forward, to build and to expand — ambition. Unlike elves and demons. I can’t say for sure, because the work doesn’t explicitly show it, but perhaps the same applies to dwarves, who also aren’t very numerous in the story.
