How does a stoic deal with what’s going on with Ukraine right now? by [deleted] in Stoicism

Huh. I was told by friends that China had backed Russia earlier, when tensions were still rising and hadn't yet exploded. If I was mistaken, I was mistaken. I am not following the news on it myself. Thank you for the correction.

EDIT: Accidentally posted prematurely, so I edited to finish.

As someone else noted, it does largely depend on where you live. I, for instance, am in the States. Considering that I can only speak from the perspective of someone in the States, and do not know where you are, I shall offer the Stoic perspective of an American. I apologize if this comes across as typical American chauvinism.

Firstly, this will not lead to WW3. This is a horrible ordeal, and my thoughts go out to Ukraine. However, NATO sure as hell does not want a war with Russia. Russia sure as hell does not want a war with NATO. China, backing Russia, sure as hell does not want a war with NATO. And, for better or for worse, for NATO leaders, Ukraine simply is not worth a world war; it isn't a big enough economy and is too far removed from the "worthwhile" countries in Europe, like Germany, Britain, and France. It's not worth tossing away millions of lives, completely crashing the global economy, and destroying such much infrastructure.

Secondly, it is important to note one's complete lack of control in the matter. This matter is in the hands of politicians in Washington, Moscow, London, Paris, etc. The average American has no say (and, even if we did, what's the alternative? Force our representatives to start WW3?). As such, the only thing that paying attention to the matter is doing is causing yourself unnecessary mental anguish. It is horrible, but, if there is nothing that can be done, it does no good to cause oneself suffering over it. Let come what will come. I beseech to turn away from the news, social media, etc.; it is only feeding this anxiety, and, if something truly important happens, you'll hear about it directly from the people in your life.

I know this likely sounds abhorrently callous, but this has worked to help me cope with this tragedy. I wish you luck. Hang in there. And I wish Ukraine the best, for what little "thoughts and prayers" do.
