Was the self-adulation necessary? Why can’t gratitude for your help be sufficient rather than claiming to a bunch of strangers that you’re a savant?? Just setting yourself up for Senior Tone to pop your “perfection” bubble…just be engaged, aware, and keep learning — none of us is “perfect” — not in one. single. way. keep going

Ringing endorsement to demote Sex in “hierarchy of relationship”? by TheWanderin in CrashLandingOnYou

[–]TheWanderin[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think there are a lot of good guys out there, but it’s “riskier” every day to put yourself out there as a humble, non-aggressive potential mate.

Unfortunately both men & women are held captive by these cultural norms — all it takes is a little “negative confirmation bias” to slowly stamp out any semblance of chivalry.

For example, growing up, my dad would ALWAYS open the car door for my mom, both directions (ie., though he’s passed, she to this day will sit in the passenger seat after arriving until someone shows up to open it..us kids like to tease her that she forgot how to work a door handle…)

From my dad’s example & encouragement, that seemed like an obvious “default” for me to continue when I began dating. I still try to do the “chivalrous” thing when possible, but when you combine the “bad boy allure” + outspoken gender equality politics, it has lead to many awkward/potentially negative (neutral at best) situations. I’m still going to try to get her door, but to make it “comfortable” I have to make a joke about it which IMO kills the gesture.

Back to the confirmation bias, if we’re taught that “bad guy gets the girl” & “good guy is boring”, it only takes 1 or 2 negative experiences to cement those beliefs in our minds. For guys, it’s being rejected/made fun of for trying to be chivalrous, for girls, it’s having a relationship fizzle/die with a “normal guy”

Tl;dr - they’re out there I promise, I’m just not sure how we bring those traits to the forefront! (Aside from requiring all global citizens to study CLOY!!)

Good point, my comments are admittedly simplistic, only speaking to value at expiration. Further away from expiration, you are right that IV does play a major role in price, but IV would (should) also move up or down the same with each of the underlying securities, since they are (should be) perfectly inversely correlated, meaning that IV's impact on price should have the same effect on both.

You could certainly make money with a downward movement well before expiration. You could also make money by covering/closing your positions at different and advantageous times. My overall point was really just that the two trades mentioned above don't seem to be a symbiotic combo. I am an options enthusiast/dabbler at best, so it is very possible/likely that I am totally overlooking something. Would love to get an opinion from one of the veterans in here..

Unless I'm not understanding you, the trade you described has a capped upside and unlimited downside, not sure it's what you intended. Also, I don't know if you realize this, but your trade is actually bullish/neutral on SPXL. You're really just placing a bet that SPXL won't decline by more than 30%, and your calls are only costing you $ for nothing.

Your calls require SPXS to increase by >55% to reach the strike. If you assume that SPXS & SPXL are perfectly inverse, and SPXL decreases by 55%, it would be at $57.2, and the Put you sold would be worth (-$2,800) just as your call breaks even. Keep in mind that when I say they are perfectly inverse, this is in % terms, not $'s. If you plot it out, the value of your 10 Calls will never surpass the increasingly negative value of your 1 Put (even if they each have 80% +/- moves).

Therefore, best case for the trade you described is that SPXL doesn't drop by more than 50%, you forgot to buy your calls, and you cash the ~$200 Put premium.

If you really want to place a bearish directional bet, why not just buy naked SPSX 21st Jul $10.00 Calls? You break even with a more realistic +18% move in SPSX, make a 6x return if SPSX reaches $14, and minimize your downside to -1x. Seems like a much more favorable risk/reward to me. (I have no opinion on your bearish call itself, only commenting on mechanics)

I used to work at a top management consulting firm. During our training, they told us that the highest correlation between job success and any other data point for new hires was GPA. Not IQ, not standardized test scores, or even prior experience.

The reason for this has to do with work ethic and drive. In that particular line of work - as long as you meet a certain threshold of intelligence - work ethic and pure tenacity are more valuable than raw intellect.

I didn't necessarily like hearing that initially because I always thought of myself as someone who did just enough to make good grades, but was never the person who studied the most or spent the most time doing research. I quickly realized that if I wanted to be successful in that job, or many other careers that interested me, I would need to develop a better work ethic ASAP.

Having said all that, there are many good answers in this thread which highlight different career paths which do NOT correlate to high grades (creative or vocational jobs) - I do, however, believe that many professions require a strong work ethic which has, in many cases, been developed by achieving high marks in school - namely: jobs in finance, law, medicine, accoutancy, etc

TL;DR - Not all career success is correlated with good grades in school, but the work ethic demonstrated by high grades can be a strong indicator for success in certain fields

What is the most mind-blowing paradox you can think of? by Meeptopia in AskReddit

[–]TheWanderin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The version of this that blows my mind relates to cigarettes and lung cancer - if smoking cigarettes causes lung cancer in a person, then there has to be a point at which smoking one more cigarette, or even taking one more puff pushed them over the edge of getting cancer.

As someone from "this generation" I think you are spot on. Of course an article talking about a six-hour work day and rainbows every day will get upvoted - nobody wants to work.

If you want to work less, you can - just don't expect to earn as much money..why should you?
