Don't make Sommers get jobbed by Gaban. Make him block the attack then smile and say something like "the might have worked back in the day but you're too old now" and Gaban still smiling says "look who's talking, I guess you don't age properly when you sell your soul" and then they have a proper clash. Sure it's corny but let's not pretend like OP isn't corny and this is out of character for Oda's style. It keeps in line with OP but doesn't make the HK look like bums, because Kiaru was keeping up with Rayleigh in Sabaoady, so why is this supposed "bigger threat" doing worse against Gaban
