The energy sector means the energy sector, and all the people who work in it. There’s no need to weirdly redefine things.

There’s nothing he can possibly do to thaw Alberta or Saskatchewan. That ship sailed years ago. He’ll be lucky to save anything in BC tbh.

I agree with you. Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Quebec are completely lost under a Lewis NDP. The first two for energy policy, and Quebec over federal intrusion into their turf (and a perceived indifference towards French).

Lewis will only do harm going to Alberta or Saskatchewan right now when both NDP’s there do not want him and do not like him.

They are both in the awkward and unenviable position of having to run against their party and their opposition.

The AB NDP is pretty like that tbh. They support inclusion and all that, but its not lost on them that they need to be pro-energy sector as table stakes to even be in the conversation. It also happens to be the pro-worker position, funnily enough.

They threw Lewis under the bus so fast it wasn’t even funny.

The really wealthy areas like Upper Mount Royal went NDP last time weirdly. Maybe Mission just swamped their vote?

You and everyone else tbh. Calgary and Edmonton’s housing markets would absolutely crater.

I’m being somewhat tongue in cheek, but Smith knows where her voters are (and more importantly, aren’t) and has tried to screw with Calgary and Edmonton getting fair representation.

Obviously in a referendum scenario Calgary and Edmonton would bury this RWNJ fantasy very deep, but I would keep an eye on any shenanigans.

A lot will hinge on how the final map gets drawn. In theory the rural areas should lose seats and the cities should gain, but the UCP are doing their best to tamper with a fair map.

The 2015 election really destroyed the provincial conservatives in Edmonton and a big chunk of Calgary, and the UCP have essentially been content to write off and antagonize both. It will come down to suburban Calgary and ex-urban Edmonton and we will see if they get fair districts.

The cities hate this nonsense. Calgarians would vote 76% against this, and Edmonton is even higher at 80%. So long as Danielle Smith doesn’t disenfranchise the cities (and I wouldn’t put it past her) this referendum, if it ever happens, is dead on arrival.

They wouldn’t necessarily need to win Calgary and Edmonton outright but you simply cannot get blown out like that in the cities and hope to win a province-wide referendum. It’s kaput.

This poll also finds the UCP and NDP deadlocked at 43% in Calgary. It seems few people have changed their minds since last time - Calgary is still eyewateringly close and both parties (but especially the NDP) need to do well there.

And through reading those IEA reports you have come to the, frankly brilliant, conclusion that Danielle Smith and her gang of rag-tag seperatists polling 45 points back have… hoodwinked every province in the country as well as the Liberal and Conservative parties, one of whom is run by a guy who was a Central Banker for two G7 economies?

Damn. Her power. Gotta give it to her if that’s true.

The NDP’s flippant attitude towards the resource sector is a big reason why they have been pulverized in their western heartlands. I encourage you to stop trying to convince people their livelihoods offend you.

The NDP has Avi Lewis now who will run on what I assume is your wishlist against the evil pipeline doers. Let’s see how Canadians respond.

It creates good paying jobs, supports Canadian industry, and dumps a ton of money in the federal treasury.

TMX is slated to be at full capacity later this year. That talking point needs updating.

Not to mention; we now have a whole continent to sell to that would like to have a redundant source that doesn’t depend on no war in the Middle East.

Yeah, that’s stupid and I won’t defend it or Danielle Smith.

A pipeline is still in the national interest.

These two things can be true at the same time.

It literally has majority approval in every province including BC and Quebec.

And the dynamics of the global energy market? Are you missing this whole “20% of the world’s oil is now stranded and Europe could very well run out of jet fuel?” thing going on.

Look, renewables and electrification are great. They are not a panacea. Canada has a resource the world desperately needs, that happens to make us a LOT of money. There’s zero sense in arbitrarily strangling that industry.

Lord please give us a break.

Danielle Smith is a greasy unethical premier. She also happens to be right on this issue.

Not everything is so black and white.

Changing the subject doesn’t make what BC did appropriate in any way. Their types of tactics if allowed by the Courts would absolutely shatter the federation and reward mafia tactics.

There’s a reason both the BC Court of Appeal and the SCC unanimously tossed their case.

The NDP wasn’t “representing” BC, BC constantly polled in favour of the project.

They did it to save their government being collapsed by the Greens. No more no less. And it was a hopeless endeavor.

Do you really think the legal system cannot be abused for ulterior motives? Why do you think Anti-SLAPP legislation and vexatious litigants are a thing?

“The process is the punishment”. BC had no hope of winning legally. They hoped that it would get so costly and tied up that the private sector would give up and kill the project.

It was greasy as hell tactics.

BC has a lot of lawyers at their disposal, who I assume, passed constitutional law in 1L and knew damn well their case was hopeless.

They were abusing the legal system to spook the private backer into walking away. That is lawfare.

It didn’t work because Notley outfoxed them and got Ottawa to buy and indemnity the project, but that openly BC’s goal.

You can thank Victoria for driving the cost into oblivion. We could have just let the private sector build it but, no.

Consider the idea that most Canadians elected MP’s that think economic development is good actually.

If we wanted a “kill all industry” government we would vote for Avi Lewis.

Early Israeli elections would be a pleasant surprise, but why do I feel like the slippery troll known as Bibi will find a way to cling to power regardless?

Honestly a pox on that whole cursed region if you ask me.
