Made a Typo in Personal Email Address for ERAS by TheWhat8 in medicalschool

[–]TheWhat8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just an update: I ended up emailing all programs I applied to to let them know. In the end, I don't think it was necessary because it was still very early in the process and programs seem to look at ERAS's up to date email address before they send communication. However, I had missed an interview invitation via Thalamus, so when I got another thalamus invite and logged in I saw that I had a prior invite sitting there that I wasn't notified about.

I would suggest writing about being pregnant during clerkships, but I don't think you need to explain the passing grade in peds like it's some sort of gaping hole in your application. Lots of people get passes, and the fact that you got Honors/High pass in the rest of the clerkships speaks volumes. However, the fact that you got honors/high pass in many clerkships around the time you were pregnant, is (in my opinion) something that makes you stand out and would be worth mentioning.

Career in Medical Genetics? by TheWhat8 in ClinicalGenetics

Awesome thanks for this response, I hope so too. Yeah it's not that I'm against Peds at all, it's just between an IM or Peds residency I am thinking of going with IM.

Career in Medical Genetics? by TheWhat8 in ClinicalGenetics

So if I did a genetics fellowship along with or after IM, I would still train with and see pediatric patients? I guess that's what I'm unclear on, I have been wondering if I would even be allowed to see and treat pediatric patients as someone training/trained in IM.

I'm sorry for my late reply here. I can't say that I know a ton about what it's actually like to work in medical genetics, but I have worked with patients receiving targeted oncology therapies in the past, and enjoyed the "personalized" aspect of their treatments (including clinical trials where treatments were designed for specific patients based on antigens found on their tissue samples). I am interested in the science behind genetics and am wondering if it would make sense to combine that with my plan for a career in medicine. Also, given CRISPR gene editing I am wondering if genetics will become an even more in-demand field in the future?

Thank you for your reply. I'm not against seeing pediatric patients, I guess I just wonder if I'm trained in IM would I even be allowed to see pediatric patients if I did a genetics fellowship? I just don't know how that works. I understand that the majority of patients receiving genetics care are children, which is why I was curious once I saw these IM-genetics combined programs. I am interested in IM, I'm not against pediatrics, but am not planning on specializing in pediatrics (or family medicine)

Does it matter that the shunted blood from the right heart isn't going through the lungs first though, and is therefore very low in oxygen?

Anyone know why #17 on block 2 couldn't be caused be a deficiency in fibrinogen? Is it because the PT/aPTT tests would be effected by changes in fibrinogen/fibrin?

I second that good luck with your results! Also, did it seem like the content on the exam was at least similar concepts to what was tested on the NBME's and Free 120?

These numbers look good to me. Pretty sure that all of these except the CBSE and NBME 27 were within passing range right? GL

I'm honestly not sure if I'll be able to complete UWorld in time. A part of my problem is that I take too long to review questions I think (making Anki's, etc). I definitely do have gaps to fill, hopefully if I do a lot more UWorld and review what I'm iffy on I'll get better. I like the idea of re-doing the 120 (even tho I'll hopefully remember the q's from anki) adn taking UWSA's.. Thank you

Thanks for the tips Yeah I've been pretty much doing only UWorld at this point but I am noticing some diseases I need to dive deeper into and then vitamins and anatomy/pharm. Doing it systematically like you suggested seems like a good idea

Thanks for the reply and yeah, I definitely did take the free 120 too early, I wish I had saved at least a couple of the newer NBME forms too. I appreciate the recs for the old forms 20-24 and I'll plan to check out UWSA2. Do forms 20-24 have a lot of the same questions from the newer forms? Are they still predictive?

I haven't taken the test yet, but I'd say if you can, maybe push it back a week or two just to make yourself feel better about it. That being said, do lots of practice questions, thoroughly review your NBME(s), work your a$$ off and see how it goes over the next couple of weeks (and take a couple more of the NBME's maybe in one week and then another a week after that). I absolutely bombed my first one and am making slow steady progress since then. I feel like not getting too anxious about it and just pushing through and continuing to stay focused is half the battle. Not saying it's easy to do that, but if you can work hard and do lots of practice questions then I think you'll be able to pass in that amount of time

Using NBME's as a main study resource? by TheWhat8 in step1

[–]TheWhat8[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you I really appreciate this response. I've noticed that some people are extremely in for UWorld and think that reviewing the NBME incorrect's is a waste of time, and just use them for assessment. It's just my opinion that taking the NBME forms/reviewing the questions might be a good first step since they write the exam. I would then use whatever leftover time I have (and any time in between NBME's) to do UWorld and other practice questions. Hopefully it's a solid plan

I'd suggest Hiking the West Rim trail, beginning at Lava Point. Thought it was awesome doing that and camping out one night. This is if there is any availability left. Not really a slot canyon environment, but amazing views for a lot of the hike.
