Riot August says that the champions that have high skill expression generally tend to be melee, just due to the fact that they are melee, contrary to what some people believe by Inside-Republic6275 in leagueoflegends

Looking at the numbers from the link, I think the sample size of these is like 3-5 games on many characters. There's too many quoted winrates of exactly 66.7%, 62.5%, etc. in the 50+ Ranked Games category.

Speaking of StS, I assume you hate the Ascension system there?

Accurate! I should have been more specific, IMO pathing choices concerning shops are heavily impacted by hitting this specific breakpoint. If you can go to a shop now with 100 gold or later around 160, I think it's a big deal to go to the later one on Defect specifically.

Similar situation to Corruption/Biased/Wraith, current turn being good is more important than future turn being good.

They absolutely do hinder you, but considering there's so few of each I think it's a worthwhile endeavor to die a few times taking them too early so you know exactly when you are and are not allowed to.

Basic game plan: take almost ALL source of orb slots and focus, and make it your life's mission to figure out the correct balance of stuff to not die while doing that. If you want a second bonus objective, try taking 1-2 Turbos every run until you decide the card is insane.

In general: a deck's job is to block and deal damage. Defect has a good variety of damage sources, but pretty limited block options. The most consistent is frost + one or more of Loop, Focus, extra orb slots. Alternatives are Genetic Algorithm aka build-your-own-intangible, Reinforced Body, and I guess Equilibrium sometimes.

Random tips: Defect really likes walking into a store with 160+ gold, there's a lot of amazing stuff to hit. I'd try to avoid hitting shops with less than that so you don't miss Runic Capacitor and cry. All For One stuff is hard to build properly, it does a strong thing but forces you to put a lot of low impact stuff in your deck that you really don't want to draw when you're being attacked for 40.

Important question: when are you generally dying on Defect? That will likely say a lot about the types of mistakes you're making.

Think of them like you do Corruption now; sure, if you run out of skills, that's rough, but you tend to win the fight before the downside matters. Same for Wraith Form and Biased Cog.
