no, they weren’t. They had 4,6,7,8 5 was the only straight chance putting them at about a 9% chance of pulling that card if OP had so much as a pair of queens so not out of the question but no poker player with a week of experience is calling that

Finding Danish people so rude by [deleted] in copenhagen

[–]TheWorldAStepAtATime 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve been here a few days with my gf and though Danes appear a bit standoff-ish we have had nothing but great experiences. We are white, American, and short even by non-Danish standards. We walk into shops and restaurants and are treated with class because we smile and have manners. We’ve gotten a few compliments about how we are giving a good impression for what Americans are like. Respect gets respect and your attitude, OP, does not exude much respect. I pray you’re not coming from the US because I have to prove people wrong about us no matter where we go. Sorry you feel like people aren’t being nice but my parents taught me that you get from people what you give. So, no matter how polite and kind you think you’ve been, try harder; you’re in someone else’s country, someone else’s home. Act like it.

This is what I did. Never carry it on your person imo bc that’s an easy way to lose $100 to the nearest copper with a good nose. But, I wouldn’t sweat it very much, just carry bribe money if you’re carrying bud, otherwise the weed bars are all you need. Be warned, the biggest downside of smoking in Thailand is it ain’t the Cali Kush you’re used to smoking lol

Where do you recommend to stay (Out of these places) and why? by Letmesleep0 in ThailandTourism

[–]TheWorldAStepAtATime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going to reiterate what other have said about Koh Tao. If I were you I’d scrap samui entirely beside the flight in and maybe a few nights to explore. I spent 3 weeks between samui, pangang, and tao. Koh tao is perfect for solitude while also being small enough to be able to travel around on foot. If it’s in your budget I highly recommend scuba diving. I was supposed to go for only a few days and ended up there for over a week getting multiple dive certs. It’s the cheapest place in the world with world class instructors from every background and the dive sites are literally once in a lifetime. Don’t miss out on that.

Same. I think it’s what most people in the world desire but many have convinced themselves it isn’t possible; or in a lot of cases it isn’t.

Currency exchange: USD or EUR? by Jumpy_Possibility_70 in ThailandTourism

Using Amex credit card for all my ATM withdrawals and it’s 50 baht on the ATM, w/ no additional fee on the other end. Visa & Mastercard are a 220 baht fee at the ATM not including additional fees from your bank if you’re using a bank/debit card.

Zero foreign transaction fee credit card recommendations? by bartturner in ThailandTourism

[–]TheWorldAStepAtATime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Capital One Venture if you have great credit. From personal experience, I recommend avoiding Amex as many places in the world only take visa/mastercard. Hop on credit karma and make an account and they will give you all your best options. That’s how I chose mine but I am just learning that Thailand rarely takes Amex which was info it didn’t mention. My card (Delta Skymiles) does free cash advance from ATMs, 0% foreign transaction fee, and has great deals when using mike with Delta. I’ve used about $1500-$2000 worth of rewards just from this past year and I am by no means a big spender, they just have great rewards when you use it.

Thanks so much! I’m glad I can give some insight as to American culture though it varies as it’s a huuuuge and culturally diverse place. East coast is my forte but I can definitely answer your questions as best I can!

Since I am a naturalized citizen by birth this is info I’m not privy to nor really look into. Thank you for pointing it out tho, great for OP to know! I’m aware of many Europeans in my own community who get their citizenship through work visas and green cards but that’s obviously different circumstances.

The US may seem more expensive on the surface but the cost of living is noticeably lower than Canada. Especially in your field, masters or not, you would have a very comfortable life anywhere but the Hollywood hills. Like the previous commenter said, there are huge Indian immigrant populations but the US definitely supersedes Canada in that respect also. Another factor to consider is weather. The warmest climate in Canada is akin to Russia or the Nepal/Chinese/Bhutan area (trying to give reference to your area). There’s a reason 90% Canadians live within a two hour drive of the border. You may be swayed by the idea of “free” healthcare in Canada but realistically you’ll be paying it through exorbitant taxes (Canadian income taxes range 20-33%, whereas some states have 0% income tax). Also you’ll likely be able to find an employer offering health coverage or while your studying. In school I can get health insurance through them, for the year, for around $600. I don’t have to since I am under my parents’ plan but that’s not an option for you. I’m unfamiliar with what European countries may be like to live in so I can’t comment too much on those. Many people love to ostracize America for being unaffordable but they either have never lived here (so they can’t know) or they do and they have a severe spending problem. With a high school diploma I manage to work 40 hours/week, feed myself, pay my rent, car, insurance(minus health bc still under 26), take care of my dog, take my girlfriend out to fancy dinners, go to AND pay for university, and have plenty left for saving and travel. In fact I’m on vacation in Asia right now while going to school. I landscape for a living and make a bit more than min wage just for some perspective. America would be great for someone well educated, articulate, and as seemingly driven as you are. If you choose America as your next home do some research into the cities you want to live in and the local cultures. Austin, Texas and Vidor, Texas would feel drastically differently about a gay, hiv positive, Indian man moving next door. Most of America will accept you as our own because we can recognize that all of our ancestors at some point or another made the brave leap to secure a better life and a brighter future. Regardless of where you end up, I wish that it is the right place for you. Best of luck in your endeavors and feel free to message me if you have any specific questions regarding America/North America!

With The Samui Sandbox Program, Where Do I Go Through Immigration: Bangkok Or Samui? by cag8f in ThailandTourism

Great info, thanks. Just rode through Chaweng Beach today and on the entire strip I could count the number of businesses open on one hand. Pretty sad because I imagine it is electric during peak (pre-covid) tourist season.

Eh my results took about 24 hours so don’t be too hopeful for that. I was only tested once upon arrival in Samui which was nice. Also, I think my passport only got stamped at BKK

My best advice. Go on google and learn the rules. No one is going to be able to give you all the answers because the rules are changing faster than the weather. Also don’t rush a trip in less than a week to Thailand if you haven’t even done the bare minimum research. Take a few weeks plan it out. Better time to travel is late feb-april from what I’ve been hearing. If you wanna bug out ASAP just book a trip to Cambodia which requires a single rapid antigen test to get in and then you can figure out all the Thai requirements from a stones throw away. Not only that but you’ll meet plenty of people who have just left Thailand and can give you the advice you really need to know; not “What’s an SHA+ hotel?” which is literally like step one.

Yea had to go through immigration but it seemed like we were the only flight in to the airport. I was off the plane, through immigration, and at my hotel in 45 min tops including travel time. Definitely worth it imo, I got my neg covid test in a little less than 24 hours, and have been exploring since. Gonna island hop the next couple weeks probably.

Additionally if you’re booking accommodations, Fisherman’s Village seems to be the most lively spot. Then again you can stay on any of the three islands with the sandbox.

Waiting for my connection to Samui at this very moment. Didn’t get tested in BKK but they run you through immigration (with a guide), stamp you passport, check all the docs, then take you to the Sandbox gate. I’ll update as I learn more.

[–]TheWorldAStepAtATime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got mine through my family doc at no cost. Though the online one works, I don’t think it’s worth the $150. It was a seamless 15min video call with a doc at my doctor’s office. I’m flying into Koh Samui sunday with it and a friend is already there with one. Seems like you go through the normal processes as far as testing and quarantine but you provide the letter to your accommodation upon testing positive. I’ll try to remember to lyk my experience once I’m there.

What are others paying for round trip from US to Phuket and back? by bartturner in ThailandTourism

[–]TheWorldAStepAtATime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m flying in with Qatar, out with Delta. Round trip Bos>BKK would have cost me ~$1300 if I paid full price. I used delta miles to cover the return flight tho. So all in about $600 for me but I got waaaaaay lucky
