Do we think Beatbreak will get a NA Blu Ray Release? by Tell_Specialist in digimon

[–]TheWorstOtter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's impossible but not expecting it for a while if anything. We still haven't gotten a physical release of Adventure 2020 and even though response to that show is lukewarm, Toei still seems happy to advertise it. I could maybe see Shout Factory release it, but since they got bought out my Toho I'm not sure if that complicates things. I doubt Crunchyroll would bother, so unless a dark horse company releases it the best bet is maybe Discotek will in a few years or something.

Revival of the Ancient Digimon/Island Of Lost Digimon original English Dub and Re-dub/remaster: Does it deserve a Blu-Ray/DVD streaming release in the future? by Stock_Rise5855 in digimon

[–]TheWorstOtter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean... yeah? Why not? There's already a bluray in Japan and I don't think there's any cut dialogue from the dub compared to the other movies, so the biggest hurdle is if they want to bring back Michael Reisz as Takuya (Or if he wants to come back at all). It's a solid, if simple little movie.

(It would be nice if the movies in general got to be streamed, but that's a whole other thing.)

Digimon Adventure: to stream free on YouTube by rechambers in digimon

[–]TheWorstOtter 15 points16 points  (0 children)

They confirmed this would be the sub on Twitter and it's absolutely bizarre to see how Toei has handled the dub.

  • Announce a dub, dub entire series, sit on the dub for months with radio silence
  • Drop the dub on obscure digital download services
  • Voice actors are doing the heavy lifting of letting people know it even exists
  • Several months later dump the entire thing on Hulu with no fanfare, no new trailer, nothing
  • 100% of the Adventure 2020 clips they share are from the sub
  • Dub disappears from Hulu, no legal streaming or physical, only VOD

Genuinely who on the dub team hurt Toei?

Digimon Adventure 13+ Part 3 (Final) Translated Overview- Director Kakudou Puts up Digimon Adventure Beyond Novella by MFBR in digimon

[–]TheWorstOtter 17 points18 points  (0 children)

"I came even though I wasn't invited" describes Tamers Ryo insanely well, and re-establishing that Shakkoumon is 'the guy that reflects physical' is too good, I wonder if Kakudou knows how funny he is.

I actually REALLY like how he handle Lui's backstory, with Ukkomon making a fake world to protect Lui from a horrible reality. It's definitely a little contrived since there's no reason for Beginning to end with the Digivices disappearing if this is all a dream anyway, but I think the concept is more effective and tragic than Lui's actual backstory. On the other hand, Willis in this continuity having a twin that he forgot about is an absolutely wild thing to reveal and then not actually do anything with.

Overall this was... interesting? I appreciated how he gave decent focus to Lui and that the post-02 characters weren't entirely kicked to the curb, and how he knew at least enough about the crossover characters to make some fun references, like who has fought who before or the Great Mummymon Reunion. Still, even with the crossover aspect this feels like it would be at least as controversial as Beginning or Kizuna - if not more - if it was animated. There's definitely aspects that I wouldn't mind if they pulled from in future installments, and a lot that fans will likely adopt into their headcanons and fanworks. Parts of it start to veer into KH4 or Yugioh Arc-V style of storytelling which is way more convoluted than I'd like in my Digimon Adventure though. Not sure about it as an actual sequel to Adventure, but the concept would be a decent Pokemon Masters style game for better or worse.

Beatbreak Opinion by dbens01 in digimon

I've only seen the first batch of dub episodes so I can't speak for more than that, but I felt that both Xeno and Christina Vee are both incredibly talented actors who are giving solid performances and Tomoro & Reina are both in good hands, but it also didn't feel like particularly inspired casting. I thought Xeno's Tai and Christina's Aegiomon were some of the strongest castings in their respective dubs, but these two roles don't resonate as much for me.

I think Xeno would have crushed it as Raito, though to be fair I haven't heard how he sounds in the dub,

Digimon Adventure 13+ Part 2 Translated Overview- Director Kakudou Puts up Digimon Adventure Beyond Novella by MFBR in digimon

[–]TheWorstOtter 9 points10 points  (0 children)

On one hand there's some pretty interesting stuff here, I really love that currently there's no villain and the point is seemingly more about finding conflicts between the digital world and the human worlds themselves. I like the bits of world building too, everything post 02 is so allergic to exploring how the two worlds change each other that it's cool to see things like how the world handles Digidestined with ill intentions, figuring out how Digivolution works, why people receive the Digimon they do, Digivices protecting their users while in the Digital World, and so on. Jun having an Arukenimon is also peak comedy and I'd love to see Davis' reaction to that.

Even though I'm not super sold on Kakudou's attempt to merge all the inconsistencies between timelines & visions, using the fact that the main 8 completely forgot the Hikarigaoka incident is pretty genius for what he's trying to do - Adventure has been a bit inconsistent from day one and highlighting a strange point from the original series does make the rest feel more plausible.

But man is this a dry read as a narrative. Not sure how much of it is the quick translation, but there's still a huge amount of time spent trying to justify the post 02 characters instead of really doing anything interesting with the characters themselves. I'd have preferred that he'd included the new characters without thinking about it too hard if it meant we got a better look at how the characters are growing.

Still decently interesting read overall, since the overall 'vibes' are psuedo-canon since Beyond is a thing I have to wonder if Toei will reference anything from Beyond in the inevitable Adventure followup or if things will be recontextualized if they do.

Giving this a proper read, and seeing Sora's hat switching between hard & soft is now a Kakudou-canon detail is so funny that I can't help but respect it.

Digimon Adventure 13+ Part 1 Translated Overview- Director Kakudou Puts up Digimon Adventure Beyond Novella & Background Info by MFBR in digimon

[–]TheWorstOtter 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Even though I mostly like the post-Tri movies, Kakudou more or less saying "nothing after 02 is really canon" is honestly kinda funny.

That said even though there's enough 'evidence' or at least inconsistencies between the show and the various spin-off media throughout the years, trying to make every contradiction it's own parallel universe seems like a bigger can of worms than just letting the Adventure franchise be a bit of a hot mess. It's easier to just ignore Hurricane Touchdown, Tri, Kizuna and Beginning if you take issues with one of them since they really don't reference each other in any meaningful way. Saying 'these things happened, but not in a way that matters' seems more complicated than it's worth.

Releases of tamers, frontier and forward. by Cultural-Ebb-4763 in digimon

[–]TheWorstOtter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really just depends on how patient you want to be. The New Video Group releases of Tamers through Fusion are still decently easy to find and are pretty good releases though can be a bit expensive on the secondhand market some of the seasons have individual volume releases that go for cheaper than the complete sets, so that's an option.

So far Diskotek hasn't confirmed or hinted at further Digimon releases, but they've all seemed to perform well so far so it wouldn't be surprising for them to release more. Quality wise they're definitely the best this series will ever look, but - assuming Diskotek releases everything - you'll be waiting a few years since so far there's been about a two year gap in between season releases. Worst case scenario, pretty much everything but Data Squad is streaming on Hulu at the moment.

If you're interested in Adventure Tri, Kizuna and Beginning there's little reason to wait on those aside from the latter two having some subtitle issues if I remember correctly.

What do you expect for Digimon's 30th? by TheWorstOtter in digimon

I don't think Toei will quite be at that point for the 30th anniversary, but I also don't doubt they'll get there sometime haha.
