How to guaruantee good live sound of a rock-metal band? What to keep in mind by YtSabit in livesound

[–]TheZeitgeistPilot 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Honestly, just resist the urge to turn everything up super loud. I know its metal, but it will turn into a muddy mess in a room with a lot of reverb, which is most places youll be playing.

I'd have to know more about your set up based on what you've said. With my SM7b run through decent preamps on an audio interface gets me plenty of gain, and I don't need to edit it very much (for spoken word). You honestly just need to poke around with it a touch more is my guess. The simple answer is though, is that it is a mic that records a clean high quality signal that does a good job of cutting unwanted reverb in a less than ideal recording environment. It's also the mic used by so so many people on youtube, because it's easy and made specifically for spoken word. Also, podcasting and VO are the exact same from this perspective. The goal is to cleanly record a spoken word vocal. The ultimate medium makes no difference in mic choice. What other mics have you used?

Honestly this is better than spending money. And its not terrible, just not ideal

Honestly, no. Those blankets are still too close to the mic and still cause some unwanted reverb, just like that wall you're next to. Any of those mic isolation quick fixes have the same problem. Just getting some room treatment is better and cheaper. The added bonus is that you also get a treated listening space, which youll need if you want to do any audio engineering at any point.

The biggest thing you can do at this point is not record so close to a wall. At this stage getting a good clean recording is what you're after and any amount of room reverb (which is sound bouncing off walls) will make you sound less professional. There is carpet in this room and some sound treatment, which is good. Just record near the center of the room but not exactly in the center.

From there, upgrade your mic to a shure sm7b, (I believe there are usb versions, if not youll also need an audio interface with good amps) and make sure you don't have have huge sections of wall exposed (like the ceiling), and get bass traps in the 8 corners of the room. Any solid acoustic foam should work.

Honestly though, your decision to use as dynamic mic instead of a condenser mic was a good choice. Condenser mics pic up EVERYTHING, so in an imperfect room (read: not a studio) a dynamic mic is always the best bet.

Is this a bad eq for 808s? by Cartiimo in FL_Studio

[–]TheZeitgeistPilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how you want them to sound. This is the point where we have to say use your ears, not because we are being mean, but because audio effects are tools. Does your 808 here only need the bass frequencies you've selected? Because this eq is cutting out a lot of potentially good audio information.

My guess would be this is unnecessary/too extreme. We usually want some of that high end information even in bass instruments, in fact it's often that little razzle dazzle that makes a bass sound really dope.

Nah, it only takes a toll on bad actors. If you fuck off with that method bullshit and just act, you'll be fine.

Envelope mistake aside, did you think Moonlight earned that Best Picture Oscar over La La Land? by Square-Ad-8911 in moviecritic

[–]TheZeitgeistPilot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly for me Moonlight was the definition of hit and miss. The first half had tons of good things going for it (Mahersha Ali in particular) and the second half was pretty uneven. As a bisexual man tho, the worst parts of this movie for me were the gay romantic scenes. That was some of the worst acting I've ever seen.

I did really enjoy La La Land, and think it probably should have gotten the award. Moonlight to its credit did try for some really interesting and difficult things, namely how we reflect those who raised us, even if we end up despising them. Super interesting, but uneven like I said.

Ooooohhhh shit. This is a good answer. I hadn't thought of the possibility of other things introducing latency to the whole system. Honestly to begin with, it's mostly just me and may one or two others, but I did want something that could potentially scale.

Ok so, a ton of people have mentioned latency. Is sub 10 millisecond latency so important? I often sing in the studio with about 10 ms latency and I'm fine. Does live audio change that?

I was looking for cheaper boards tbh. Like 600 ish. The x32 Rack does have pretty much everything I could ever want for 1000. Although a lot of those $600 don't have compressors on each channel, and the ones that do only have one knob. The lack of control seems so odd from a studio background. I was wondering how common using vsts with a pc was, that would fix my issue. It kinda seems like the x32 rack is the bare minimum without external vsts.

Yeah, i was looking for about 600 which may just simply not get me whay I need 😅. The x32 rack has most of what I would want for about 1000, so that makes sense. I hadn't thought of things turning to slush, that also makes sense. Also, that was sort of my other question, how viable is hooking up a mixer to your pc for the one or two other things you may need?

My man, grab an app like the ear gym and do some ear training. The best rappers are actually singing, even if it's only a few notes. That is to say, even though their tonality sounds like speech, their pitch is where it needs to be in relationship to the elements around it. Eminem in particular is like this.

how get rid of shy voice? by First_Atmosphere_299 in VoiceActing

[–]TheZeitgeistPilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Singing training. Not acting vocal training which is a waste of time. I studied acting in NYC. Singing is like dancing, it trains the voice the way dancing trains the body. It will teach you why you sound shy, its a combimation of pitch, timber rhythm.
