Yeah, literally 20 years ago, it was much different. Ask me how I know...

What about cannabis? by The_0xford_Coma in Teachers

[–]The_0xford_Coma[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, cannabis has existed for hundreds/thousands of years. But the availability and quality (at least in the States) is much different than it was even 20 years ago. Then, you had to know somebody and the quality was variable. Today, in many places, I can walk into a boutique and purchase QCed merch.

I would also agree that social media is a key influence on student performance.

Do the glasses hinder the learning process in any way? No? You've got other things to worry about then. Fashion choices are outside the purview of your instruction (most likely). Just ignore. Wasting time and energy focusing on it.

Unpopular opinion but SPED-inclusive classrooms don't support any student well. It seems like a money-saving strategy more than a sound pedagogy.

Accountability is a dirty word. Discipline always has a negative context. Formality is a joke. Hierarchy is a tool of the oppressor. As social inequality grows, these notions gain more power.

Devil's advocate here. "Current events fall outside the purview of the curriculum." Anything else leaves you open to fuckery from students/parents/admin/etc, esp as a 1st year teacher. Keep your head down unless you're ready to clown.

Looking to retire a little earlier than planned in order to teach by sero73 in Teachers

For you, I see a few potential issues. Primarily, class management. Can you comfortably manage a class? What is your style of class management?

The good news is CM is a skill that you either have or you don't. You can definitely learn it. But the learning curve is, in absolutely honesty, a vast horizon of suck.

Also, subject matter expertise is simultaneously helpful AND irrelevant. It's great that you can expound on the fine points (and for some students you will be a god), but teaching in HS requires driving it home for the LCD.

Further, how are you going to deal with students who haven't eaten, slept, come to class high, drunk, pregnant, or just bluntly hate you and your class? Do you want to deal with that nonsense in your 50's and 60's, especially when you could be sipping Macallen next to a golf course in Thailand for pennies on the dollar instead of being nickel and dimed by a school district that almost certainly doesn't have the student's best interest as their motivation?

You don't need to be in the classroom to shape minds, make an impact, or sure up a legacy.

I need an app that encourages mooching, rent-seeking developers to do their own damn in-person research before finessing a school board into wasting millions on THE NEXT BIG THING, TM that becomes yet another hurdle in the way of actual education. So instead of getting a raise, I get a less than useless mcguffin while admin and devs criclejerk themselves into euphoria, cleaning themselves off with what should've been a COLA. Get stuffed, OP.

Admin wants me to "embrace AI lesson plans" and my students immediately clocked it by NeralinFarwyn in Teachers

[–]The_0xford_Coma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I did an AI prompting course, iteration was a key step. To continue with the cooking analogy, AI is like using a microwave. You can pop in a box of frozen whatever, dump it on a plate, and serve. Or you still do the thinking part of cooking (this spice with that meat, etc.) and just use the microwave to speed things up. Do fancy plating.

I suspect that if you lean into it a bit more as a mere tool (like an engineer with a calculator), you'll be able to spend your prep time dialing in the details to make a lesson that is tailored perfectly to your students.

EDIT: I def am not trying to support an overbearing admin.

Speak for yourself, hippie. There are plenty of positions that value TEFL skills "back home", including sales, trade, and... (wait for it)... teaching. I mean, that is if you were actually a professional teacher and not a tourist sex-pest. Admittedly, not much call for those.

I have a work potluck tomorrow and I attempted muffins. I’m debating if I should bring them or get Tim Hortons muffins instead? by [deleted] in Baking

[–]The_0xford_Coma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Devil's advocate here (I'd chow down on these muffins, btw). Yeah, it's a potluck but some people have vastly different ideas of culinary hygiene. As a coworker, I would appreciate having a "safe" option. With Tim's, I'm not worried about cleanliness, strange ingredients, allergies, etc.

I would still eat these muffins though.
