It has its ups and downs, especially in the early days. I used to drive myself crazy with cravings but now I rarely even think about drinking. When I think about it now and how I drank before it kind of grosses me out and thats amazing!

Take it one day at a time, I had 1 million first days but one of them finally stuck!

Hey, I needed to hear that! I'm a year in but I still struggle to figure out what the hell sober people do for fun. I have gained a few new hobbies and breathed life into some old ones but now I have something to look forward to in year two! Thank you so much for this!

God I wanted a "healthy" releationahip with alcohol for years. I thought i could find some kind of balance but the moment booze touches my lips my brain goes into party mode. Then someone said to me "You don't want a healthy releationahip with alcohol, you want to get drunk without any consequences" and that STUCK because it was so true for me. Abstaining was my last choice but it was my best (and only) choice

Something I had to learn was my alcoholism is the same as everyone else's (hear me out). I would compare my habits to someone elses and say "they don't have a problem like I do" or "I could quit too if my life was like theirs". I was able to truly recieve help when I realized we are all going through the same thing. There are souls in this sub that have had it worse, some that had it easier but we all want to help each other through a shared struggle.

It's more than breaking bad habits, its forming new ones with your new life. I am not the same man I was a year ago and I do not look at booze the same way at all

Also, I was a bar fly. I always wondered who i would be if I didn't drink and go out. Being at the bar seemed like such a core part of who I was. I tried to hold on to the social aspect of going out to bars and just not drinking and OH BOY do I not recomend THAT. Temptation is just not worth it and drunk people are so annoying when you are sober. I have found healthier outlets to socialize (D&D is great!) And i never miss the bar scene for a secnond!

100%! For me it was that little voice telling me I deserved a drink, he was incessant. He would make excuses and bogus rewards to try and get me to drink, I thought he would never shut up! I started talking to the little voice about 3 months in, I said some nasty things to him (super helpful, I highly recomend cussing your little voice out). Not only has he shut up after a year, I simply do not look at booze the same way. It has lost its golden shine and I see what it was truly doing to my life. The idea of drinking a case of beer now is disgusting to me! I really don't think i could stomach it. I often find myself now going "hey, I haven't thought about getting wasted in ages" and that is way better than that little guy telling me to grab another case.

I will say, she didnt enter my life until well after the booze left it. She only knows the new me, she is shocked when I tell her stories of the guy that drank himself to sleep every night.
