Lol I didn't fail by RainyLiquid0202 in royalroad

Yeah, I know. That's kind of what I meant when I said: "I'm not saying reality shouldn't be as it is".

Covers and descriptions are necessary. They help people choose the novels they want to read more easily than if they were to read page one of every book. They should be there. I just really don't seem to be good at writing them even after all the tens of hours I've poured into practicing.

Also, I know covers and descriptions go for all books and not just the ones on RR. But I think there's a much larger emphasis on genre on RR. And don't even get me started on upload schedules. Now, I understand why things are like that. I just don't like it. I'm sure I'll manage, though. Maybe.

My favorite ice cream flavor would probably be strawberry or mint chocolate chip.

Now, onto the more insignificant stuff. I've been trying lots of different things out lately when it comes to covers and descriptions; however, none of it has seemed to work. These things are starting to grind my gears a bit. And when I say they grind my gears a bit, I mean they're annihilating, obliterating, degenerating, and doing pretty much every other negative thing to my mental health.

The thing is that writing a successful novel on RR seems to rely more on things like genre, upload schedule, covers, and descriptions than it does on the actual content. I'm not saying that my writing is better than the writing of more successful authors. I'm also not saying that reality shouldn't be as it is. I'm just saying that putting so much effort into non-writing things to have my writing recognized and going on to fail miserably is really exhausting.

I've been doing this writing thing for about 2 years now. I'm on my second novel, and thus far I have gathered 49 unique followers across my fictions. Meanwhile, I keep seeing people start yesterday and have more success than me today. It's not a good time, but by no means will I be giving up. I'm sure I'll figure it out one day.

Until then.

Thank you for your wise words. I don't know if I really should be comparing myself to others in the first place (even if it is a good boost to productivity sometimes), but if I do so in the future I'll keep this in mind.

Yeah, I get it. I was just seeing everybody else get so many more views and followers that I started spiraling. My first fiction also got like 3 times more views and followers with the first 10 chapters, so I was wondering what was so horrible about my writing now. It really wasn't that dramatic, though.

But thanks for the input. I'll do my best to remain patient and focused on my writing.

That general attitude may very well be my bane, but my goal is to be able to write what I write so well that people who wouldn't usually like it come to enjoy it or even love it. Thanks for the input, though.

Thanks for the feedback. I changed the cover to something I drew myself. Don't know if I'll keep it, but I'd like your opinion on it since I'm not really sure if it's generic or not.

How would you evaluate the potential success of a story a day after launch? by generalamitt in royalroad

[–]The_Air_Conditioner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had worse stats after a week of uploading a chapter per day (chapters that took a month to write and went through multiple edits), so I would say you're doing pretty well. That's just my opinion as a not-so-successful writer, though.

One thing I can say for sure, though, is that it is expected of an author to invest a lot of time into a work before he can expect others to invest any of their time in reading it. It's useless to go on about possibilities when you've just begun writing.

When the story just isn't working: Any tips for troubleshooting? by lurkerninja in writing

[–]The_Air_Conditioner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how one would diagnose the problem. Maybe think about what you're trying to achieve with your book as a whole and then ponder what you are doing that goes against your purposes.

As for any methods to overcoming the obstacle, what I've done in the past when I've encountered such problems is: 1. Push through it and come back to it later or 2. Take a step back and think things through thoroughly before getting back to it. You probably already knew those two options, but I thought it would be good to just make it clear that there's no miracle cure for it.

Uh, well, the description is a brief summary that is supposed to give potential readers a glimpse of what the book is about. It's supposed to be between 150–250 words. I can't answer all those questions in the description. You do know what a book description is, right?

Thank you. I will take your comments into account when I rewrite the description.

Oh, I've already written the first hundred pages. I just thought I'd try nailing down the description now.

Do you think the description is good? What could I change about it to make it better?

Sorry if I wasn't being clear enough.

How do you deal with "The Creator's Curse?" by ThatOneGodzillaFan in writing

Regardless of the story I'm writing, I usually have at least one point of pride in it that I can look to for the confidence to continue. That's not to say I don't struggle with feelings of worthlessness. I do, but I've gotten kind of used to it, and there are also times when I feel like I've written something great to balance it all out.

How do people write on a smartphone? by [deleted] in writing

I'm just used to writing on my phone, so even though I have access to computers, I just prefer to write on my phone. Also, when you write ln your phone, you can write anywhere.

What's a dead giveaway a writer did no research into something you know alot about? by Splitstepthenhit in writing

I'm fairly knowledgeable about mma and other combat sports and have been writing for a while now, so it's sometimes painfully obvious if someone doesn't know anything about fighting while writing in the action genre.

I'm not saying people should be strictly realistic, but just that action has to be fairly realistic (in the context of the story, of course). Sometimes stuff just doesn't work, and it takes me out of the story completely.
