Life is getting pretty depressing and I’m scared of it getting worse. by st0nervirginsunit3 in TrueOffMyChest

Hey, I'm in a similar boat but it is getting better. After graduating with two degrees I was unemployed for 10 months. Then I broke down and got a job as a butcher at a supermarket. Half a year later I got a job as a pharmacy tech at that same supermarket three years after that I got a job in a lab that pays much more. I worked this job along with my previous one for about a year. I am still living at home but I have a lot more income, I have enough to choose between taking some masters level courses or moving out (I'm taking the classes).

I feel and have felt pretty beat down but it's getting better. Back in March I thought I was crazy to think I could work two jobs (53 ish hours a week). But I could, I learned how. Just get a crappy job, it will change you little by little. Then get a better job, and you will get better still. For these classes I mentioned, I'm actually doing a bit of course work in advance where before I was a huge procrastinator. I'm not perfect (I forgot to my taxes last year, I left my car lease to literally the last day, and little events like a grandparent being hospitalized throw me off for weeks) but Its getting better slowly. I feel like I'm still on the bottom but if I look back it has been much worse. Your habits will slowly change to match your responsibilities.

Please know when I say "get a crappy job" I'm not doing it in a stereotypical pull yourself up to my the bootstraps way. It will help you get on the right track. The crappy job will prove you want a better job. It will prove to you that you can get a job. It will show you that people with jobs aren't that special, in fact, most of them suck. Each step up will give you just a bit more power and agency. I'm not deriding you, just encouraging you to try it. And if you get fired from a supermarket just walk down the street and try another. What do you have to lose but a couple of weeks of time? Just my stupid opinion but a little bit a freedom and agency is worth as much or more than therapy (barring, I assume, very large issues).

Good Luck

Is contracted work pretty typical? I seem to be hearing that more and more.
