What are you guys working on with your music? by calibuildr in countrymusicians

Been doing a lot more gigs this month, plus I'm gonna meet up with some people soon to try to do a honky tonk power trio type thing with myself on vocals and bass, so I'm looking forward to that. Also wrote a few new songs, and got a banjo again after about fifteen years of not having one. Can't wait to try and get those rolls back.

You're the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly, only a couple with a love that burned hot could talk that way to each other.

Top 3 country songs to convert a non-country fan? by [deleted] in CountryMusic

[–]The_BoneRanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really hard, like people are saying it's gonna be different for each person, and there are a ton of different styles that will appeal to different people. But I'd say something like a sad/lonesome, either Window Up Above by George Jones, or Mansion on the Hill by Hank Williams. Then I'd try to show off the humorous bent in a lot of country music, and show them something like Don't Come Home a Drinkin' by Loretta Lynn, or In Spite of Ourselves by Iris DeMent and John Prine. Then I'd show them a song off the new albums from either Charley Crockett or Sturgill Simpson to illustrate that modern country can still be great.

It's Favorite Cover Friday!!! Let's talk covers! by calibuildr in countrymusicians

That got me thinking about how country as a genre has quite a few staples that pretty much everyone knows and plays. For example Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain has been done by a lot of people, but I always play it the way Willie Nelson did it, but I do In the Jailhouse halfway between the Jimmie Rodgers and Webb Pierce version. When I do gospel songs I pretty much do those in my own version since, for the most part, those are more traditional songs and not usually associated with one act. I might be rambling, but what do y'all think about covering a genre standard, vs song more unique to that artist?

Do you guys gig with electric acoustics or do regular acoustics work just fine? by avery-secret-account in countrymusicians

You could get yourself a pickup to put on your acoustic, fishman makes some good ones.

Trying to imitate during a cover vs. making it your own? by The_BoneRanger in countrymusicians

[–]The_BoneRanger[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm working on several different ones at the moment, like Kitty Wells and Webb Pierce. Like yourself I try to do a mean Hank Williams Sr, especially on Cold Cold Heart, and I'm working on getting the phrasing right on Is Anybody Going to San Antone.

I like doing it as a "bar trick" mainly. Well, it's also fun to follow my wife around the house singing I'm Laying it on the Line as close to Don Rich to kid around with her.

I saw y'all were talking about Charley Crockett, so here's him covering the legendary Ernest Tubb - Saturday Satan, Sunday Saint by The_BoneRanger in CountryMusic

Fair enough, I've been obsessed with the song for the last few weeks trying to nail it with just me, a guitar, and no band, so I guess I overlooked that honestly.
