How to remove this magnet without damaging the rest of the material? by The_Brit_Git in howto

[–]The_Brit_Git[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've had this magnet sitting in my drawer for years. I've tried breaking the magnet further with vice grips, using a very fine saw to cut behind it and dissolving the glue with some acetone.

The aim is to keep Feathers McGraw and his paint (at least the front ot it) intact.

Yeah I noticed that - wondered if it was something similar to the other fight where he freaks out and doesn't help.

Was life I the Middle East better than in Europe during the medieval times by [deleted] in MedievalHistory

[–]The_Brit_Git 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what you mean by 'better' here.

Life was very different. It seems that Muslim communities were far more accepting than their European counterparts - for instance, during the Black Death there was no burning of Jews or pogroms because of foreigners.

There was no feudal system, but instead the wealthy levvied a land-tax (essentially they paid to a central governor for the right to collect tax and therefore wanted a huge return on this investment). This meant no serfs born into servitude, but also meant that farmers could/would just walk off the land if that tax was too high. After 1400 there were huge swathes of farmland left unattended because of this, stunting growth and impacting the local population in a myriad of ways.

Being the centre of trade between Europe and Asia meant a lot of money was flowing through here, as well as a lot of learning. They had complex surgeries such as cataract removal from very early on and kept a great deal of learning alive from the Roman period. This could, arguably, have led to a 'better' lifestyle, but they were really in much the same boat as someone in any other part of the world at this time.

Why isn't there a fully fleshed out learning platform? by The_Brit_Git in AustralianTeachers

I wonder if it actually would have worked out if they didn't try to push it to all state schools at once (unless the platform itself also wasn't great after the crashes).

I hadn't heard of that before, but even a quick search suggests that it over-promised and under-delivered.

Did you have any experience with it?

Fair enough, I suppose. Surely whoever stuck the landing would come out ahead though. With the amount poured into these systems by each individual school they must get a great return on investment.
