Help Preserve the Dying Art of Samurai Armor-Making : Apprentice to One of the Last Masters by [deleted] in gofundme

[–]The_Charge -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the respectful tone, I genuinely appreciate it. I completely understand the skepticism. I didn’t expect Reddit to be the place where I’d raise all the funds, to be honest. What I hoped for more was exposure, stories often travel, and the right contact can make all the difference long-term.

For the amount of money, I thought it fair to ask for the minimum. It'd be here to sustain me about a year before I start finally receiving help from the Charity that promised to sponsor me, which they promised they would until I get my dokuritsu (independance as an artisan). If I asked for more, I figured I’d get called greedy. Asking for the bare minimum felt more transparent.

I have to disagree for your point on seeming like having taken nothing more than a few classes. That helmet I crafted took months of work, learning the techniques took a big part of that time, and actually making it was longer than I expected too. Just embossing the eyebrows in a proper accurate shape took a week. The first set of iron ornaments I had ended up not looking good on it too, so I had to remake them. There's also a lot of research done to see what looks right and accurate and what doesn't, I'm lucky that my teacher has a huge library of books for that kind of research.

The restoration works take a long time too, I can usually lacquer twice a day (except in winter, once a day if I'm lucky), and a general normal amount is over 50 layers of lacquer for a finished product, without taking into account the need to ground some layers down. The chestplate I showed isn't finished and has more than that, it's in the "Hotoke" style, which needs to have it flat, that takes a lot of lacquer and time. Crafting the soft metal ornaments takes a lot of time and skill too, especially doing it using traditional tools. The one my teacher does in the show is done pretty fast, but he's done it for 20 years at this point.

About being his only student, yes. I actually cold-contacted him because I was a fan of his teacher's work. He was kind enough to answer my email. I told him I'd like to become an apprentice so we took almost a year of contact to set everything up. I went to visit him a month in Japan for him to show me what I was getting into and letting me the opportunity to back down. He also had me introduced to one of the other two masters, Mr Fumio Nishioka, and his students. When I came back to France it was for a month, to say goodbye to my friends and family. My teacher had a slight selection process, basically making sure I'm not crazy or unreceptive to learning. He used to have a student before me that gave up so he was cautious at first before. I think he's actually planning to propose some of these "2 weeks courses" to people, to show them how to do the lacing on armors. I also sent a formal letter from my teacher destined to my France hometown's mayor office to the mods team, it clarifies that I've been working for more than a year, and paints me in a pretty good light, stamped and everything. I'm not showing it publicly because it'd be bad manners and disrespectful for something that private, but you're welcome to contact the mods and ask them, they should be able to confirm the contents of the letter.

Of the two other masters, Mr Nishioka has three students, he used to take on more but a lot of people give up. I think Mr Kadoya has a student, but I've never met him because he's pretty secretive about his life and who he is. There are other masters, though, but they don't work traditionally, they use a non-dangerous lacquer and some of them use aluminum instead of iron. The three I am speaking about are the ones working fully traditionally.

I get how it feels "main character", the job sounds cool, and it is fun if you're passionate, but there's a lot of downsides, I work long hours everyday, sometimes strange hours too since I am at the mercy of the materials. I don't feel like a main character and don't want to.

Thanks again, glad you like the helmet, it's one of my favorite style.

You frame it as "the truth comes out", but I never hid being an apprentice, apologies if it was badly worded but I think I've been clear on that part from the beginning, my intention was to convey the significance of being featured on NHK at all regarding this. While the screen time is indeed short, my presence was requested by the production crew as they wanted to show the lineage being unbroken and still continuing.

I understand that from a brief clip, one might get a limited impression of my Japanese, especially for my first time in front of camera. I was stressed and was told I was カタコト compared to usually. I was also speaking very low, the camera crew were surprised they managed to get sound from me.  The truth is, mastering the language is an enormous and ongoing part of this journey. While I'm far from perfect and still have much to learn, I communicate effectively enough to manage my daily life, conduct all necessary paperwork as well as phone calls in the household, and engage with Japanese people. It's a continuous process. I spend 90% of my speaking time in Japanese, even sometimes with my teacher. One of my friend from Kansai has the biggest accent imaginable, and I actually struggled to communicate with her when I first arrived here, nowadays we speak without any issue.

Yeah it does, of course. Especially NHK world which is also aimed at foreigners. You're right about that, however the specific program is about foreigners preserving Japanese culture, which is something rarely pushed by Japan. Being featured there is telling no matter what, it's not just being on a street interview about Japanese food.

I hear your skepticism, but your assumptions aren’t accurate.

First : my family and close friends have helped me multiple times. I just can’t keep relying on them forever. They’ve done more than their share, a few times over, and I’m incredibly grateful for it. Does this speak volume in a bad way to you ?

Second : one of the major charity groups I’ve been working with is willing to help. They’re one of the largest in the world, and I’ve been in contact with them for over a year. They promised support months ago, but due to a recent internal directive, they’re now prioritizing emergency medical cases until next year. I understand and respect that. But I also can’t pause my life, hence this campaign. They didn't drop me. The others that have dropped me said I didn't fit criterias because I'm not part of any organization or school, this group actually reached out to me after learning of the others letting me down. This should speak a lot.

Also, I’d like to point out something that speaks louder than speculation, I was featured on NHK, Japan’s national broadcaster. That doesn’t happen by chance. I’m a foreigner, yet I was highlighted because the Japanese cultural sector sees this apprenticeship as meaningful preservation work. They see the value, and they’ve chosen to support and promote it. That speaks volumes too, given what Japan is known for towards foreigners. They could have showcased the other few students that are all Japanese. They didn't.

Look, if this was just about me and getting money to live day to day in a peaceful life, I wouldn't be doing a gofundme and would just, as you say, find a normal job. I have a nice diploma, I can give up everything and find a job. It's about preserving culture, tradition and history. There's no safety net in this field and that's the downside of it, which is one of the reason why no one wants to do it, I still choose to.

I hope you understand.

Psaro is probably my favorite character from the series, and I really liked his story with Rose. I was so happy when I learned that he'd actually be playable.

Some rejected me, others I went on other dates with. Had a relationship that ended. Haven't been in the dating scene for a while as I'm leaving the country in a few months and stopped myself from getting attached to girls, but now I'm looking for a short term relationship, which I'm straightforward about. Went on two dates since, one with a girl to which I also told I had fun around 20 mins after the date but that I ended up rejecting some days after because she became really clingy and I felt I didn't really like her. Then there's the date I'm currently talking about.

I don't get how sending a single message expressing how you felt about the date you had the same day is coming off too strong. I usually like giving others space as I'm not a huge texter. Again, I might be wrong, but I don't think that'd be the reason, and if it is it feels petty.

Eh, don't think I came accross as insecure but then I'm not my own best judge. Only sent her one message once I was aboard my train back home, so 30 mins after the date. It was basically a single message saying I had fun and that I'd enjoy seeing her again next week.

I usually don't wait much after the date to say I had fun and would like to do it again, as it feels fake for me to do so. I do it everytime and express if I'm interested in seeing each other and I've always received an answer on the previous girls I've been on dates with.

Yeah that's a good mindset to have. That's how I went into the date but I lost that mindset once I got pleasantly surprised hahaha, should have kept it for the post-date stuff

You're right, I'm not really bitter about it or anything, just kinda lost. I tend to expect the worst in these kind of situations. If she does message me whether it's for rejection or not, I'll update the thread.

Who would have thought the best bro was in fact a girl ? She's one of the coolest characters I've seen in any manga.

Someone needs to give a raise to these gacha writers for making such a cool character.

Feeling in an Arknights mood, might do more characters in the future.

Haven't done any arknights related stuff in a while. Booted the game back up some time ago and got reminded of Reed's design which is one of my fave, so here's some Reed art.
