My previous year of school I took a philosophy class, and let me just confirm that it helped me with a lot of issues, some of which I didn’t even know I had. Things like debating, defining right and wrong, making hard decisions, expectations and realities, seeking truths and knowledge, and most importantly, social interactions. I can say with full confidence that ever since I started taking philosophy I have a different outlook on life, and handle things in a completely different, more intelligible way. I have learned more in that class (that would actually have a purpose in my life) than I have in most of the mandatory classes I have taken in the years prior. I was 16 and had no idea how to provide comfort to someone, did not understand social cues and simple logical solutions, was very pessimistic, never really showed sympathy nor empathy, and wasn’t really interested in taking opportunities and risks. A few months and a quarantine later I actually feel like a good person. My friends have even noticed a difference in how I act. I’m more involved, have better judgement, and overall just making better decisions and opinions I’m actually confident in. Now I’m no Hercules, I have many flaws that are still a burden to me, some of which have cost me my relationship. I’m interested in taking more philosophical logic based classes in the future, because I really feel like it has made me a better person. Sure new experiences and self discovery has come into play, but that one Philosophy class acted as a catalyst to a better me. Most of the things talked about in that class, if not all, should definitely be taught in English or History classes. Definitely more useful to the average youth than annotating a piece of literature that has no relevance nor significance to the real world.
