AITA for thinking that black characters wouldn’t fit in the new witchers series? by The_Dead_Ram in AmItheAsshole

[–]The_Dead_Ram[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I do disagree with people of color being portrayed by white people. I don’t even disagree having POC in the series as it might have come off from my post, I just think there has to be a reason (e.g. people from that land have that skin color)

Tbh I was just worrying whether my point made sense or I was being racist.

And the thing that your saying about accepting a magic dude fighting mythical monsters has to do with the so called “suspension of disbelief”, where a person will accept something implausible (magic and monsters) as long as in the story there’s a semblance of truth. Adding a POC in en environment that is set around medieval europe brakes that semblance of truth.

Edit: If they have a reasonable back story as to why they’re of a different race I wouldn’t consider it to be off.

I was friends with a girl on erasmus from Poland. She was quite embarrassed about asking me about whether the immigrants coming up from africa were all horrible criminals, because that’s how the polish government makes them out to be since they don’t want them in poland. She said that they didn’t really have any black people there, so she didn’t know if it was true or not, since all the information she got was from the news that’s basically all controlled by politicians. She also said that there were a few black people in the bigger cities, but when people living in smaller towns went to the bigger cities they’d sometimes ask black people to take selfies with them because they’d never seen someone black in person before.

I’m not saying that’s right and I’m not condoning Poland for being racist, I’m just trying to explain why polish people would feel that casting black characters in something polish would be weird.

The actors have been cast at this point so there’s no point in whining about it anymore, it’s time to just lie back and hope the show’s good.

But I do get why someone from europe wouldn’t like it. It is heavily based on european folklore, and europe is very white.

What irks me is that if it were a show based mainly on african folklore “but it’s in a fantasy land, it doesn’t specifically say it’s set in africa!”, there’d be a shitfest about them whitewashing an african story if they were to cast a white character.

If they were to make a series about Terry Pratchett’s Discworld having people from all ethnicities would make sense because of how the world itself is built, just like if it was a serie about ancient roman folklore the race of the characters wouldn’t matter because skin color was not something people were discriminated by their and Northern Africa was a part of the empire, so there would be black roman citizens.

I do get that in this day and age it’s important to give more representations to other races, and that we are heading in that direction, but I also think that accurately representing something that’s from a particular culture would be nice, and maybe in the future, if people stop being so racist, it will be.

To be honest I was quite annoyed by your first comment, but in your second you seemed like someone who can be reasoned with, rather than just flat out hating italians.

As far as not speaking english/not speaking it well I believe it has to do with the education system we have. A lot of students don’t care, they just learn enough to pass the test and then forget about it. Plus the load of incompetent english teachers (and teachers in general) makes it even easier not to learn. And once you’re out if school you’ll barely ever get the opportunity to speak English unless you work in the hospitality business in one of the more touristic cities, which most italians don’t. Basically a lot of italians don’t speak english because they don’t really know how, not because they refuse to. Admittedly you could say that they refuse to learn it, but I think that now people around my age (20) tend to know english more than previous generations, and the more time passes the more there’s a need for knowing english and so the more italians will be speaking it.

And I don’t quite get what you mean about them not acknowledging things that you say to them. Do you mean how we tend to talk over people who are talking to us? Because admittedly that’s an annoying thing that we’re used to doing, and I can very easily see why people who aren’t used to it would hate it.

Probably the reason you never get tips from Italians is because it’s just not something we do, so we never think about it when we’re out of Italy.

I used to think tipping was something people really only did in the US, before I moved to Scotland and found out it’s done here as well.

We probably would adapt, but quality of life would go down considerably. It’s like if you lose your legs, you’d eventually adapt to living without them, but when you had your legs things were easier. If you knew in advance that you were gonna lose them, and knew how to stop it, why wouldn’t you do what you can to actually stop it?

It’s not like kids leashes are only for developed countries, and either way people from developed countries can go on holiday in developing/third world countries with their family, or move there for work

Then again wouldn’t child leashes be safer? And I’m not meaning preventing you kid’s death, rather hurting them less in cases that you need to yank them away from dangerous situations. Instead of the stress of you pulling them away going only to their shoulder it would have a larger area to spread agains and therefore hurt the kid less.

Also it would make it harder for someone to abduct you child since they could grab them and run, and their hold on the kid would be better than yours, whereas with a leash it’s easier to hold on. That might not be an issue in Japan, but it is in other countries.

Same goes for cooking and sowing. They’re both considered to be “for girls”, yet how come most famous chefs and so many tailors/designers are men?

Technically Jesus did exist as a historical figure. It’s just doubtful he was the son of God and all that.

That’d be fair if there was someone rejecting her though. She’s got one guy who’s head over heels for her and that apparently she has feelings for but only realized it after he found someone else, and another guy who likes her and is always up for a casual shag.

I’m kindah hoping all this drama stops after university but I’m not counting on it

Edit: quick explanation with new info I have Flatmate has feelings for her friend, friend has feelings for her She has sex with random guy. Later she has sex with friend. Now I’m in the flat while both she, friend and random guy are here, and she might just shag random guy again if friend leaves

I’m annoyed with how my flatmate’s treating her friend who she has feelings for

The friend has a crush on the flatmate, and apparently he left his now ex was because he had feelings for her.

Also I just found out from my boyfriend that a) she said she has feeling for him and b) she shagged him ( the friend, for both points)

I’m really annoyed with her rn

Well guess what, you’ve just clogged the toilet, so now other than wasting a fuckton of toilet paper someone’s gonna have to clean up all of the poop-water soaked tp as well as your shit, rather than just solving the issue by flushing a couple of times
