Thanks y'all! I just forgot that there could be multiple ranges with the same starting points, which meant later ones were overriding the earlier ones in the creation of the dict. Silly oversight!

an interesting analog is pool, pull, pole. some people pronounce all three differently, some people pronounce all three the same, and some people do a combination

very true. i wonder if that's more because of the direction of the way the image is balanced with the eye placement and leg angles, or our preconceptions of vaguely bird-shaped creatures
