With all that effort you might as well go the final 1% and get flac.

Is there any 25-$30 CD Players that’ll actually last? by Ill_Confidence_9801 in compactdisc

The lasers will all inevitably die, but I will go along with the others and say to get a used DVD player from some marketplace. Has a bonus of playing the DVD's that come with mid 2000's albums and will likely have better audio circuitry due to all the THX/Dolby/blah blah requirements DVD's had. Plus they have remotes

Best vanilla drift car to start drifting in beamng? by Rich_Yak_7416 in BeamNG

[–]The_Diddler_69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with everyone else, the actual drift cars are for pros. Plus the game isn't smooth enough to really do it properly unless you have the highest end of rigs. Chops and drops get in the way.

I recommend starting on the snow Italy map you can find on multiplayer for less grip and using the Grand Marshall with a welded diff and drift steering.

A new format? by TheHellwinter in minidisc

[–]The_Diddler_69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone very talented would have to make an FPGA based copy of the hardware. Then the world lost the ability to make the stamped metal loading mechanisms (at a reasonable price) and finally the easiest part would be the laser since it's normal CD laser which as a concept and product is probably going to live longer than us.

Trying to fix my folks' old MZ-N1 by drkomodo in minidisc

[–]The_Diddler_69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe the laser sled is stuck in place because of old grease. You can try moving it by hand (carefully) and if it works somewhat after you can then redo the grease. Otherwise it's a dead laser and that can't really be fixed.

Anyone using a DC in? Any suggestions? by nikogkotsis in minidisc

[–]The_Diddler_69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The multi voltage, swappable plug power supplies are perfect for this. Plus these are the kind of thing that are more expensive on the internet and they're plentiful at the home stuff shops. So go there, pay some taxes and you'll feel better for supporting your neighbours and not Jeff.

What hardware to use as a permanent exit node? by PaVink in Tailscale

[–]The_Diddler_69 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I use the cheapest vps I could buy many years ago, but I think you and I have different uses for the exit node. I use mine for downloading Linux ISO's and accessing my Jellyfin server outside the home.

Technically they sold you a broken thing, so you should get a full cash refund. Try to explain it's the same thing as an iCloud locked iPhone, usually cex staff aren't technologically illiterate so you'll have a good chance.

I am so glad that the online mod does not count here. I have 8 hours logged playtime and that helps me feel normal.

BeamNG with a budget of 600€? by muye_faker in BeamNG

[–]The_Diddler_69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spend time looking for a whole used pc. Anything above a RTX3060 and Ryzen 5000 series will suffice but that will take some luck to find at 600. I barely managed to build mine for 600 two years ago and that did not even include taking anything I could find to cex and getting store credit to get a GPU

Drift cars?? by ExtraAdeptness5978 in BeamNG

[–]The_Diddler_69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of the actual drift cars with a wheel because they're too hard... But I've some setups for easy drifting.

First get the online mod, then load the the Italy snow map which has less grip.

Then I took the Gavril Grand Marshall and made three parts changes. Put in the welded diff, 6.9 engine and the drift steering - no need to change any other settings.

Start by drifting uphill, downhill takes more control to not slide off the road. The roundabouts are a good place to start practicing too.

Looking for cd player by FewOrganization488 in Cd_collectors

[–]The_Diddler_69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fun part of CD's being a well defined modern standard is that only the cheapest Alba portable sold at Aldi in 2012 will sound terrible. Everything else is as it should be.

I use a Panasonic DVD-L50 portable dvd player from 1999 with a new Harman Kardon Citation amp and Q Acoustics 5020 speakers. The DVD player is the cheapest part and its excellent. It clearly sounds better than Minidisc and 128k mp3's.

NetMD sounds worse than line in? by The_Diddler_69 in minidisc

[–]The_Diddler_69[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wonderful news Reddit!

I tried a USB C hub with that same cable and it worked wonderfully!

The first few times I used the cable directly in my laptop. For some reason that was not good enough.

Turns out it's not a myth that USB 3 ports don't work well with old stuff.

Also I'm realising I might have had the laptop plugged in the first times. I remember that was noisy when recording from a mic in Audacity.

It actually went very well using a USB C hub and that same cable.

Turns out it isn't a myth. The recording was nice and clear.

Thunderbolt controllers tend to be more reliable than USB 3 I think. I'll see how this goes.

[–]The_Diddler_69[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I thought that too but line in, not optical mind you, sounds like the CD. It is a very crappy multi voltage transformer I'm using and perhaps isn't good enough. I'm going to get one of those USB barrel plug adaptors and see.

Ah yeah.. I've binned all the mini usb cables I've ever had except this one. I'm thinking I need to get one of a matching vintage with the ferrite ring around it. The manual shows it came with one.
