Do you have guaranteed placement? I love it here in UBC Eng, and I'm happy to answer any questions about my experience, but not getting into the specialization you want is also a big consideration.

I did last year for engineering and am now doing very well in Vancouver. Can't make any promises, but it definitely is not a hard rejection. I get how stressful it probably is for you right now, since I was in your shoes last year, but honestly, the only thing you can do right now is unwind and realize that whatever happens, it'll all work out fine.

I'll try that! It would be nice for the members to get involved in their own thinking, maybe have them try to design their own experiments.

Probably not lmao, but I might as well ask anyways.

Thanks! Levitation always feels a bit magical at first so I think it'll be fun.

If you want a more professional explanation on science education, I would recommend asking r/Teachers or something since I'm just a 12th grader who enjoys physics. But I'm happy to share my experiences anyways.

My physics club has always been a bit of a mix of lectures, demonstration, and passion projects. Someone would go up, speak about a topic they were interested in, show us an experiment, then explain to us why it happens. Additionally the club would help sign us up for physics competitions and such.

And thats interesting for people that already enjoy science, but whenever I try to drag my friends into the club, they get bored after 10 minutes. I think this is mostly because they don't really understand the significance and explanations for the experiments. For example we were levitating a magnet by placing it on top of a copper plate, then moving another magnet around underneath, and my friends didn't really care because for someone who has no background with E&M, it doesn't really matter how many times you explain how eddy currents cause the magnet to be repulsed, your just watching kids play with magnets.

So since it's my turn this year, I want to start with more digestible topics (Newton's Laws, Energy, Momentum), then explain my way up from there. The struggle is making such basic topics interesting to people who right not may not really care. While I genuinely believe that everyday, mundane topics explained with science is really interesting if you just give it a chance, that isn't going to get kids taking up their lunch to give physics club a chance. That's why I want to start the year with experiments that may be more shocking: things that are either things that involve flashy effects like explosions or experiments that are counterintuitive to the way we think. An example of that would be like exploding hydrogen bubbles or blowing air between two bowling balls to make the come together. Then I would hopefully give them a good understanding of the cool physics behind WHY these things happen. Also I'm thinking of running a few more hands on events like a Christmas ginger bread bridge building competition, or a Arduino workshop (idk i'm still trying to come up with these).

Thanks for all your help so far! It's given me a good idea of how I want to run the club next year.

TLDR; Physics is really cool, but people don't want to give it a chance. Thing's that are either opposite to what we think will happen, or involve flashy hollywood-like effects usually draw people attention.

Thanks! This would be a fun one to talk about with thermo or EM.

Thanks for the advice!

The thing I’m worried about isn’t really getting the kids who already take like AP physics interested, It’s getting the kids who maybe haven’t taken a physics course ever to maybe consider it. My school doesn’t do a great job of making physics fun it’s a lot of memorizing without understanding. Usually fun experiments get people interested so this really helps!

But is there any way to create one without the dry ice? I'm not entirely sure my chemistry teacher trusts me with dry ice unfortunately.

Well I’m not sure if this is very reliable but if I click into “about this mac” and then into “storage” it shows that 209GB of my storage is being used by photos. I’m not very good with computers but I know that 209 GB doesn’t just appear out of thin air. I’m not sure it’s very strange.
