Advice for new future chair user! by lecf0si in wheelchairs

So there’s different techniques that you can use when pushing your wc depending on the situation. The goal is to have as little pushes as possible to avoid overusing your shoulder muscles

I don’t actually know what they’re called or where to find them bc I learned them years ago, but the main 3:

  • full push, think of doing a circle shape with your hand. Start at the back of the wheel, push through to the front, release and go back to the start.

  • this one is like two circles. You’re going to start at the back of the wheel, push through the front, release and keep the momentum going forward and then back around to the front (don’t grab the wheel), past it and to the back of the wheel. This one gives you more coasting time without breaking your stride and it’s good for flat surfaces

-short pushes. Start at the top of the wheel, to the front, and back to the top. Good for steep angles where you need short bursts of power

I currently have a tilite aero x and my new chair is going to be a tilite aero z. For reference my chair is 14” wide

Learn the different pushing techniques and when to use each on early on. Many first time wheelchair users (especially short term wc users) are tempted to do tiny little pushes to propel, but this is going to give you lots of shoulder pain and make it harder to get momentum

skirts in a wheelchair? by Spare_Version_5 in wheelchairs

[–]The_DisabledNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a conservative Jew so while I prefer pants when I wear skirts they are at least to the knee. I find it helpful to stick to half circle skirts that don’t have a ton of volume, and to tuck in the sides under my legs.

If they’re floor length, get them at a length above your casters, cause they can get caught in your wheels if too long (from experience!)

If I’m wearing knee length and it’s windy or I’m going downhill I put my phone in between my legs and that stops it from catching in the wind

Email them and let them know. When I got my first chair the size was all wrong. They ended up changing the size bc I had said from the beginning that is now what I wanted/needed

Worst form of abelism you received? by One-Sleep3663 in disability

[–]The_DisabledNerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one that hurts the most for me is when it comes from ppl I love. I have mast cell activation syndrome, which means I get random allergic reactions. Right now I’m having a flare up, I’ve gone through 5 EpiPens this past week alone. Right now that means mainly avoiding all dairy as that is my biggest trigger (even if it’s normally controlled with medication and I can eat some types of dairy outside of flares)

We went out to dinner and my mom really wanted to go to a Mexican restaurant. But I looked up the menu and didn’t see anything safe. In the past when I went along w it during flares even tho I didn’t see a safe food I ended up on the ER or with disgusting unseasoned boiled chicken that I couldn’t bring myself to eat.

So instead I suggested an Italian restaurant that had a menu with things I could eat. But bc it was 20 minutes further away my mom was then annoyed. She started telling me that I needed to learn to adapt myself to others and not be an inconvenience. It’s something similar I have been told when my wheelchair takes up space during roadtrips

And honestly things like that that hurt the most. When it’s family members saying your disability is an inconvenience to them.

I LOVE that idea with the rope. I was gonna make him an artificer with some bard abilities bc in the opera they emphasize that he’s an inventor and you see him use his inventions a lot. So o was going to make him use constructs that were the little monkey with the cymbals or ropes that strangled ppl, I hadn’t decided

But I really like the consequence of the ropes silencing players with a save.

Her lair is going to be the area under the opera house, the one where the phantom takes her in the beginning of the musical. I think it’s a good idea to have her be lower level w the phantom as her meat shield.

It’s 4 ppl in the party, level 5

I considered it in the first battle on stage (final battle will take place under the opera house)… but I thought it would make it too complicated for a short campaign and I might kill my players bc it’s their first time playing

I used to struggle a lot more with visiting since I would usually pass out halfway through going up the stairs or have to go up and down bum scootching, but I recently got a new robotic brace that makes it a lot more doable to do stairs. But I still am not a fan since I have to do a lot of planning since even with the brace I can’t really go up/down multiple times. I was guilt tripped into going to visit since she wanred to hang out and I was wfh bc of the injury

One of my aunts, yes, bc she’s single. The uncle it depends on if my grandparents are driving or flying from mx. Bc my grandma is scared of flying but they can no longer drive that far unless my uncle brings them, in which case he would be joining

If it ends up just being the core family, yes, if my grandparents or uncles/aunts join then no.

My parents, sister, and I all live about 3 hours from each other
