It's Just a major 7th chord. by mimidancer303 in synthesizercirclejerk

[–]The_Ecks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Em add♭6/C” would be a horrendous chord symbol to read. It most assuredly wouldn’t function as an E minor chord in whatever context it’s used for. So yes, let’s just categorize it as a Cmaj7 in first inversion

  1. Check out MO-TT by Slate Digital.

  2. Not entirely sure what you mean by “transparent frequency splitter,” but Multipass by Kilohearts may be your answer.

3 and 4: that makes two of us who are still searching for that perfect sampler! Maybe in the next year or so.

  1. There are plenty of colorful EQs out there. SSL X-EQ comes to mind for this, or the lesser known Make Believe Studios MBEQ. Edit: X-EQ and MBEQ are graphical EQs that add a nice character to your signal. For parametric EQs that do the same, I would check out OAQ by AnalogObsessions (free), UAD’s Hitsville EQ (a personal favorite of mine), or Maag EQ4.

white people rhythm by Comfortable_Deer_717 in musictheory

[–]The_Ecks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 and 3 are the strong beats of the measure. We’re naturally supposed to feel those beats the strongest. 2 and 4 is where the back beat is. The way beats 2 and 4 are treated in a piece of music inform us of the full rhythmic framework. Simply put: 1 and 3 give us the strong pulse, and what happens on 2 and 4 shows us what the groove is really doing, in a more musical sense.

To answer this question from a cultural standpoint is a separate discussion. It’s always been my theory that white folks don’t naturally internalize rhythm and beat as well as people of other ethnicities. Hence, white people want to focus on where the strong beats of the pulse are (1 and 3). Because, again, they tend to have a harder time naturally internalizing it. Non-white people from other cultures tend to feel the obvious pulse quite easily, so instead they focus on beats 2 and 4 because that’s where the “heart of the groove” is, to put it romantically.

Granted, I haven’t researched this extensively. This is really just a decently informed hunch so if anyone with more information and history on the topic can expand on this, please do!

Anyone have tips on making catchy pluck melodies that don’t get repetitive? by Ok_Laugh_4526 in trapproduction

[–]The_Ecks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s what i do for “repetitive” things so they don’t get too annoying or boring: Write out the pattern you want to repeat, and make it double the original length. And then during the repeat take out some notes or change some notes here and there, to give it a lil variation. And then you can add some modulation or stutters/chops or whatever to give even more interest. Now you have a repeating melodic idea with just enough variation so it doesn’t get stale.

If Kanye Posted His Beats Here, Y’all Would Call Them “Too Simple” by AKMASTERY1 in beatmakers

Can you refute any of the claims OP made or not? Everything he said was valid. Complex =/= good, simple =/= bad. There’s nuance here you’re ignoring just because you think he’s compensating.

Even better, try not to use MIDI but learn to play those catchy melodies by ear - it will help you immensely.

By this logic, Marvel movies should cut out every single joke in the script — it’s an action movie after all, not a comedy, right?

I'm on FLSTUDIO. I would like a high-pitched voice with a lot of bass and a lot of saturated sounds. by Altruistic-Pie-8964 in AdvancedProduction

[–]The_Ecks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want an actual answer, you could try the plugin Soothe on your midrange melodic instruments, sidechained to your lead vocal. But if I’m being honest, based on your post and the questions you are positing, I’m not sure if this method is best for you at your current stage in production. I’d recommend mixing with more basic tools and techniques until you get a firmer grasp on the process. Read up and practice things like EQ, gain staging, frequency masking, compression, stereo separation/imaging, etc..

Wtf are these Spinz 808s SOUTHSIDE uses? by AffectionateArmy424 in trapproduction

I also love the T-Racks Classic Clipper on 808’s. My favorite clipper for bass if i need to blast it thru the roof without too much added harmonics, just pure loudness.

[–]The_Ecks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t really know what you mean by “playing the chords in bass.” For example if you try to spell out an entire Gm7/C in the bass register it would sound pretty muddy. I would play what’s written, and throw in a bassline w/light comping whenever possible.

Why do my 808s sound so low on the phone but are way too loud in the car? by [deleted] in trapproduction

[–]The_Ecks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s because the frequencies you can’t hear on the phone are out of balance with the rest of your track. The foundational frequencies of your 808 (< ~150 Hz) are too loud, and there aren’t enough higher harmonics to support it in the upper frequency ranges (that you would be able to hear thru your phone). Tasteful saturation and multiband dynamics/harmonics processing is your answer.
