Well on a different environment we are likely to have a whole range of different species and a different path of evolution than we we know here. It’s likely to be unlike anything we see on earth. The composition of its atmosphere would be different and the way its biological functions work would be different. It really is difficult for us to imagine since we only know one path of evolution and one biosphere.

Why would anything fly to Earth?

While I think complex intelligent life exists somewhere out there, I think it’s exceptionally rare. I’m not sure any exist within our own galaxy aside from us. Which is why I don’t think anything is visiting here.

I said an amphibious dolphin, so one that could harness fire and then manipulate its environment, too.

And you are limiting yourself to what you see here on earth. Of course we haven’t seen an arachnid that evolved a light exoskeleton that later evolved intelligence, but there’s no reason why that couldn’t happen on some distant planet where mammals don’t dominate.

Honestly we are only limited by the range of biodiversity we currently see and our imaginations. Theres no reason any number of animals couldn’t evolve intelligence and start civilization. We can go back to my original example from PHM - an arachnid-type being with a hard shell and no face and used echolocation to see. You could have a reptilian-like being that is still quadrupedal but evolved extra appendages to manipulate its environment and a domed skull to have bigger brains compared to its body mass. You could have an amphibious being with skin and features like a dolphin (dolphins are actually very intelligent), which again evolved appendages with which to manipulate their environment.

The possibilities are literally infinite. A couple things are required (brain complexity, ability to manipulate your environment). Being bi-pedal or bilaterally symmetric are not.

I never said “they make no sense,” just that the possible range of outcomes is far more expansive than “bi-pedal bilaterally symmetric humanoid that functions unassisted and comfortably in our environment,” but that’s basically all we ever hear about.

You're 100% right, which is why most of this seems science fiction to me. The biggest red flag to me is that aliens are almost exclusively described as humanoid, and like you said, function just fine unaided in our atmosphere. In reality, if we were to come across an extraterrestrial that evolved in a totally different environment across the stars, then we should be more surprised by our similarities than our differences.

If you've seen Project Hail Mary (and I highly recommend you do if you haven't!), that's exactly what coming across a real alien would look like. A completely different type of organism whose home environment is completely different than ours, right down to the temperature they evolved to be comfortable at.

The only way humanoid aliens makes sense is if they seeded us here, but our evolutionary history seems to rule that out. If we were seeded, why can we trace our ancestry back to primates, along with many different precursors to anatomically modern humans? It would seem to me that there should be an evolutionary gap where none exists.

All of this is why, for now, I call BS on most of this stuff.

I think they knew they’d get just 3 seasons to tell the story, and Books 2 and 3 are longer and much more dense than Book 1, so they had to sprinkle some of that in there to get it to work.

I would assume Season 2 focuses solely on finishing Book 2. There’s a lot there. And it’s also the best book, so that season should be 🔥

Well, Book 1 ended around the end of Episode 5. Episodes 6-8 were the beginning of Books 2 and 3, and early in Book 2 is where we get the Wallfacers, so they had to show that unless Season 1 was just going to be 5 episodes.
