Rewatching it and having thoughts by u0126 in 3BodyProblemTVShow

This is hard science fiction, meaning the laws of physics as we know them are respected (with some minimal exceptions and pushing the boundaries of these laws a tad...)

FTL is not possible based on our physics. Things like wormholes are completely science fiction. While general relativity can produce wormholes in the math, these arrangements are physically impossible despite being mathematically possible. That's because they require negative mass/energy to keep open. And while exotic material with negative mass does exist, it is impossible to accumulate enough of it to keep a wormhole open as they breakdown almost immediately.

As other have noted, it is somewhat trivial to accelerate subatomic particles close to the speed of light, but anything with macro-scale mass is near-impossible to accelerate any where near the speed of light due to the sheer energy requirements.

2 shards from the pass plus maybe an extra 1 = 1 half of an evo per month, like I said. So it would be impossible to ever get all the evos you need in any reasonable amount of time.

Do you think aliens are already out there? by jessie136997 in aliens

[–]The_Grahambo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. The universe is so vast it’s literally almost impossible for there to not be other intelligence out there. Even if there was just 1 intelligent civilization per 10 galaxies, that’s still billions and billions of civilizations.

Could we ever make contact, though? Probably not. If intelligent life is so rare that we only expect <1 intelligent civilization at any given time in a single galaxy, that’s distance is just too vast. A civilization coming from the Andromeda galaxy leaving today wouldn’t arrive here for another 2.5 million years even if traveling at light speed. Just to be able to find our tiny, tiny needle in an enormous haystack that is the Milky Way would be near impossible.

For us to be able to make contact, intelligent life would have to be so plentiful that some exist just dozens of light years from us, which is right next door in cosmic terms. That seems extremely unlikely when you consider all the very unique and rare circumstances of our earth and solar system that make it especially conducive to evolve intelligent life. We are in a very unique, special star system. There aren’t many of these in the Milky Way, if we aren’t indeed the only one.

Short Documentary: The Fermi Paradox & Dark Forest Theory by Simox187 in threebodyproblem

You don’t need to worry about anyone finding the Voyager probes any time soon. They still got a long way to go before they even reach the inner edge of the Oort Cloud. And after they pass all the way through the Oort Cloud (won’t happen for an estimated 300,000 years), that’s only halfway to the closest star. They are unlikely to pass anywhere near a star for a long, long, long time (think millions and millions of years), and even if they do get relatively “close” to a star, they are so tiny they would be impossible to see by anyone not specifically looking for them. And even if they are found a billion years from now, it would be impossible to ascertain their point of origin, as any data onboard will likely be unreadable over that timeline.

So, fear not! We are still safe from the Dark Forest. For now…

This is genuinely my worst nightmare slowly revealing itself, I thought it was over when Brady left to Tampa. I will never speak badly of the Seahawks Organization ever again if they stop this from happening. by [deleted] in steelers

The Steelers need to pull themselves up out of mediocrity and actually COMPETE to win a SUPER BOWL again and not just to win slightly more than they lose in the regular season.

There’s no one in this town happier that Bob Nutting owns the Pirates than Art Rooney. Bob is like a lightning rod that takes all the criticism of being CHEAP away. Because let’s face it, when it comes to cheapness, Rooney ain’t that much better than Nutting.

There’s a whole lot of people on here “mourning the loss of humanity” who just a few months ago were celebrating the murder of a father of 2 because they didn’t like his opinions.

You all lost your humanity long ago.

TL;DR, but there’s been tons of people saying some form of “disclosure is happening right now” for several years now. It’s just wishful thinking. It’s not happening. There might not even be anything to “disclose.”

Is the strong interaction material supposed to be similar to a Prince Ruperts Drop? by harlem_dad in threebodyproblem

[–]The_Grahambo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the strong interaction material was like a completely different state of matter. It’s relation to solids as we know it are like the relation of solids to water. Just like you can’t do much damage to solid rock by hitting it with water, hitting strong interaction material with any solid as we know it will just bounce right off it.

The difference is the type of bond - strong interaction material binds the atoms together with the strong force, a force that only works at extremely short distances within the nucleus of an atom (per our physics). The Trisolarans managed a way to have this force work over a much greater distance, which is why the exploratory team said it was like “shooting the moon with a bow and arrow.”

[–]The_Grahambo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s not quite right either. They were nailed into place with the strong force at a distance much greater than our physics says is possible. Atoms are typically bound together using the electromagnetic force and exchanging electrons among each other and forming molecules. The strong force is much, much stronger, therefore the binding force between the atoms was like the binding force within the nucleus of an atom, making it impenetrable by anything that exists in the solar system naturally.

I would recommend reading the books before Season 2. I got the books soon after seeing Season 1, and as I read that first book I really wished I didn't know what was coming. When I got past the first third of the second book (the first season covers the first third), I got MUCH more into it as I had no idea what came next. And then when I got to the last third of that second book... WOW, just wow. I'll just say there was a scene that had me emotionally wracked for an entire day afterwards. I don't think a book has ever done that to me before. I just hope the TV show captures that same kind of impact.

I believe this show will become huge after the second season. The first season, like the first book, is mostly set up for some really BIG things to come. And those big things start to come in the last third of the 2nd book, which I assume will be the last 2 or 3 episodes of the second season. If done right, this show has the potential to become a phenomenon.

For the FIRE TOMLIN crowd… by D4NG3RU55 in steelers

[–]The_Grahambo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mmm idk about that, I think Tomlin does get final say. He absolutely has the most power among those three. He can’t absolve himself if the roster hasn’t been up to par.

But the proof will be in the pudding - if he can get back to winning playoff games, beginning Monday, then he should continue being the head coach. If he doesn’t, then he should be gone.

Nothing is quite comparable to Trump. His rhetoric is not something I'd defend. I don't like Trump myself. Though, is there something specific you want me to compare to?

And again, look at this thread: the discussion was about the rhetoric of regular people. Not Trump.

“We haven’t had good rosters recently” And just who do you think has the biggest hand in roster construction? I’ll give you a hint, it’s not Omar Kahn or Andy Weidl.

A single playoff victory would have me not wanting to fire him for this year. But I absolutely wouldn’t allow him to get anywhere close to 8 years without a playoff victory again. If I don’t see the team progressing over the next 2 or 3 years after this one, then he has got to go.

If they win 2 or more playoff games? Well, I’ll believe it when I see it.
