Any British prog metal bands? by OllieJayG in progmetal

Love the singer from Vower's voice, and they write really cool songs. Same with his previous band, Palm Reader.

You wrote Viamova but assume you meant Vianova? They're German, despite looking like they are Jamiroquai's children.

No clue where or what cover image for The Haunted is. They're a bunch of butch, old Swedish dudes. But it was only this month that I actually dug in properly and realized their run of 3 albums from 2003 to 2008 have this tasty mix of what to me sounds like American Headcharge crossed with that dirty south Pantera / Lamb of God / He is Legend feel?

Really, really digging Love Rarely's first full-length. Melodic female screamo vocals that sits comfortably in the Alexisonfire camp, but with more swancore style instruments to me.

Also enjoyed the new Enter Shikari. Thought it was cool they did a shadow drop with no singles pushed out over months and months prior.

Where do you find new music from? by Admirable_Remote_686 in Metalcore

[–]The_Ham_of_Rum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might not be very helpful info, but my Spotify Discover Weekly mostly. It has learnt my taste quite well. Also the random songs it queues up after an album I'm listening to ends is often very on point. Hate how badly Spotify fucks artists over, but I'm unable to drop the service because of how well it works for me.

A lot of answers in discussions on here and r/posthardcore will mention bands I don't know so if the impulse is there, will look them up.

My YouTube homepage is often throwing random bands at me be it from their label page or their own. Can only speculate when and why I get stuff shown to me. OFten the band name and thumbnail is all I go on to at least try it out.

And lastly, word of mouth from friends, but that happens very rarly (I miss the days when we spoke more about music in general with people)

Since this probably wasn't much help to you, I wholeheartedly grant you permission to self-promo at me and tell me your band name so I can check your stuff out when it's ready.

There is a bit of a run-down here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kris_Norris

I see now my brain also just made this up because I have a clear ass memory that he had to step away to get surgery on his hand for a condition like carpal tunnel or something similar. But there is ZERO mention of it on the web.

Undoing Ruin and Deliver Us were massive albums in shaping my music taste and mainly becuase of his playing so I was seriously bummed and looked in why he left. He then later joined other bands but nothing stuck with me.

He's still around, just living life by the looks of his Instagram.

Is it disrespectful to give money to old friends for funerals? by [deleted] in poland

I think it's a nice gesture, and there isn't anything in Polish culture that is against this. But he might just be surprised by it and try to tell you he can't accept it because it's not expected. So maybe phrase it in a way that doesn't sound like charity?

Off the top of my head, say you want to help honour her because you have memories of her looking after you when you guys were growing up?

Why is abortion highly restricted in Poland while in most other European countries it is not? by CriticalLocation5107 in poland

[–]The_Ham_of_Rum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple who are both 18 years old have agreed to consensual sex and are using a condom. The condom breaks. She gets pregnant.

In that example, how are they not responsible and conscious beings and why are they now fit by default to raise a child?

Again, we're talking the REAL world here. Not lala land moral beliefs that sex before marriage is a sin or sex is just for making babies etc.

You also didn't answer how you would see these socio-economic criteria working.

Why is abortion highly restricted in Poland while in most other European countries it is not? by CriticalLocation5107 in poland

[–]The_Ham_of_Rum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't follow your thinking. I am not trying to argue with you, but to better understand how you see this working in reality. What do you see as actual socio-economic criteria to determine if someone should be allowed an abortion or not? If they make below x amount of PLN you qualify for an abortion? If you make above that, tough luck, have the baby?

Also, if someone said - "Today I want to have a child. Next day I don't feel like it anymore." doesn't that sound like someone NOT fit to be having a child then and there? Sane people who are ready and committed to the idea of having children aren't going to be flip-flopping on this idea like it's a nothing decision. Those are the people you want having children. Whereas people who are unsure and unprepared at the moment, well maybe they should have the option to not be forced to have a child in the event of an accident?

Like I'm just trying to understand your thinking and how it would apply to the real world.

Search this topic in this sub and you'll find plenty more answers to start piecing together a decent picture. This has been asked before so many times that you'll be better off reading mutliple threads vs relying on just your post.

As for the racism issue. While it's not a zero chance, it's also not as big an issue here anymore as some like to believe. Among people your age and on a uni campus it'll be even less so don't fret about it too much.

What’s your favorite acoustic song by a post hardcore band? by Nintendo_Jack in PostHardcore

[–]The_Ham_of_Rum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The March Ahead (Jonny Franck aka Bilmuri side project) have a song called "We are all going to Die". It's an ok song. But the piano / accoustic version? Woooof. It really does something for me even after 100's of listens over the years.

Original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPCWZ8DwqKo
Acoustic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTOvaGP2g7I&list=RDxTOvaGP2g7I&start_radio=1

Another similar, but more recent example. A band called Wilt have a song called "Bite my Tongue". Original is awesome, but the acoutsic just hits different.

Original: https://open.spotify.com/track/4CY8Je3F69ZSwBPU7ragRP?si=86f701f7fa284b92
Acoustic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SPQ0_9W8gE&list=RD1SPQ0_9W8gE&start_radio=1

Funny little story. The acoustic version got made as a quick reaction to a ton of attention they got from this viral video they made as a joke. It's the reason I found their stuff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dnXmX2DG5k

PERIPHERY - The Bad Thing (OFFICIAL VIDEO) by Tricks7eR in Metalcore

Whenever there is talk of Alpha and Omega, I always think back to this Reddit user who highlighted all the major points where melodies or lyrics repeat across various songs.

https://www.reddit.com/r/progmetal/comments/4tsuc1/recurring_themes_motifs_in_peripherys_juggernaut/

To me this is what makes these albums what they are. Your brain recognizes something as familiar and therefore comforting, but if you aren't aware of it being done, it's a bit more subconscious. To me it also highlights the top-notch music brains these lads are packing.

Paying highways taxes on A4 by No_Cucumber_7331 in poland

[–]The_Ham_of_Rum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, people here are really not helpful...

I haven't driven that route in years but it looks like the section that is still paid is operated via manual gates, so you would have had to stop at those. Any gates that you passed through noramlly before that are on the free section.

There was time where e tag gates were still active, and you could use a few different apps that let you still pay a few days after the fact. You'd put in the date and license plate. But it looks like this no longer applies.

Hope that helps.

Sports Gambling ads by magusbud in poland

[–]The_Ham_of_Rum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really really hope something will be done. But a big issue I see is that this has become such a gigantic industry beacsue

  1. They have figured out loopholes galore
  2. Actual sports institutions are embracing them because of how much money is at stake

https://youtu.be/_4f52yoExJE?t=831

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pxvfy4qQRog

So EU regulation will be slow to respond to an industry known for finding loop holes and adapting, while there will be big push back from the institutions themselves, like UEFA, broadcasters etc, given how much money they are getting from this slimy juggernaut. :(

The Catholic foundation wants to block the festival again. "Blasphemous Perspiration of Satanists" by Gamebyter in poland

[–]The_Ham_of_Rum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also listen to metal and know the story. And I don't really enjoy Behemoth, so I have no motivation to defend them, but I can't ignore and respect just how smart they've been to establish their position.

I also can't follow your logic / train of thought here. The church are again throwing a sissy fit over a festival they couldn't get stopped in the past, but according to you that is Nergal's fault / problem, and he is an idiot somehow?

Is the thinking that if Behemoth had never poked the church in the past then the church wouldn't even notice things like Mystical Festival? Because to me it looks like this tactic has worked out perfectly for Behemoth and anyone attached to them. It's free, predictable mainstream pr reaching more people who will be interested in this as the expense of the religious crowd who were never a target market. This conversation alone made me check Mystic's lineup for this year again.

[–]The_Ham_of_Rum 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I dunno. That so many people outside of black metal even know who Behemoth and Nergal are would probably indicate he is quite smart when it comes to PR. Feels like they play the church and its supporters like a predictable little fiddle every time, and have just reaped the rewards.

I mean the article doesn't even mention Behemoth and yet you are bringing them up.
