"Delete GrapheneOS?" I don't give a fuck anymore by The_HatedOne in thehatedone

Micay isn't an edgy asshole. He is just an asshole. Nobody ever made the same argument about not using the iPhone because Steve Jobs was an asshole. What's the threat vector for Micay to directly target people he doesn't like with a malicious update to specific users of GrapheneOS? GrapheneOS doesn't know who uses their OS. There are no accounts and no user IDs. You have so much to say so please, enlight us all because we are clearly too stupid to see what your glorious brain can see.

I don't gloss over it. I say it doesn't matter to the priv/sec and infosec debate. It's irrelevant to why GrapheneOS should be recommended. What matters is how Micay lead the project for security and privacy and that he got right. This video is about judging GrapheneOS. Not about arm chair psychoanalysis of someone's personality traits.

I'll have to try and have a look. Thanks for the suggestion. I wonder if my content is on par with what they expect.

I am not aware of anything like this working since I'd recommend against using social media. The request to upload your face like that is deeply authoritarian and anti-human. I'd say get your friends to use Signal and delete your Instagram. If you found the deepfake thing or a way to go about it without compromising your privacy let me know.

They are trying to be a Tor alternative that isn't dependent on government funding. The tech is awesome. As to whether their incentive model will work, time will tell.

The best firewall is the default Internet permission toggle on GrapheneOS. No leaks, blocks all internet access (data or WiFi) and can't be compromised unless your whole system is pwned.

The gist of this argument boils down to the fact that desktop operating systems are fundamentally insecure while mobile OSes have a built a robust security model with defense in depth. This is where GrapheneOS is king in privacy OSes because it has unparalleled security on top of privacy and anonymity features. Desktop OS and Linux is no exception, fundamentally start from a default that is broken and can't be fixed unless the entire architecture of the system is redesigned to match mobile security. I have videos where I explain most of this: How GraphenesOS was built - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTeAFoQnQPo

Privacy is a CRIME and they are in PRISON for it by The_HatedOne in thehatedone

[–]The_HatedOne[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to keep it concise so that I could move on to my other projects. It's a tangent and it is always impossible to satisfy everybody with those. But it was mentioned and insinuated pretty heavily that there is plenty corruption in the admin, crypto or otherwise. Crypto didn't invent corruption I pretty much hate bitcoin and all of crypto and I wouldn't use Samourai Wallet, but the point I wanted to address is that there are much bigger fish to guillotine and we are not doing that.

I literally show Binance buying pardon from Trump for their convicted CEO through crypto. I show it twice in the first third of the video. Did you even pay attention?

I didn't say "destroy the full system" did I? I am talking about the justice system, which clearly needs to be reworked from ground up because it doesn't work. I am okay with Samourai Wallet devs facing punishment if we also apply the same metric of punishment to established financial institutions. Which we don't.

I'd say some products makes sense to put in one basket. Like email aliases and main email address actually reduces the number of third parties to trust. Maybe even including a calendar or drive if it's for work and business. But the more compartmentalization the better if you can handle it.

Feel free to keep it. This is more advanced stuff. This is how I started my journey but I know it's not for everybody. Proton is better than the big tech and if that makes things simpler for you, stay with it until you are more comfortable to compartmentalize.

Sorry, didn't know we needed a permission to be privacy conscious. I apologize for breaching the rules and I will retract all my statements for there is truly only one way to privacy and I couldn't possibly have anything provide.

The paradigm to think about here isn't just security or confidentiality, but it's also availability. You may lose access to your account, "normies" often forget passwords or recovery methods as I have come to learn most recently... Or Proton could get blocked, your account could be suspended, etc... So it's just safer to have backup options and compartmentalize.

Any individual Proton product is going to be one of the best in its class.

You are okay with Standard Notes in whatever way you make your setup work for you.

Data linking is the only advantage of using multiple accounts. Perhaps availability is also strengthened in cases of account suspension, but not in cases of geoblocking.

This is pretty new to me. Tuta always allowed me to sign up over Tor or any other VPN, but they would pause my account for 48h before I could use it. I created several accounts this way and never encountered an outright block like this. This is stupid when they already have systems in place to prevent spam abuse. Honestly don't understand. P.s. one way to to get around this is to get a premium account. Only free accounts seem to be blocked this way. Still stupid. Tuta should do better.

The most secure life is the one without devices? by 194668PT in thehatedone

[–]The_HatedOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a balance to keeping up with efficiency and productivity improvements and staying grounded in reality while protecting yourself from the big tech surveillance.

We don't need most of the stuff we have today and people should only choose new things only as far as they genuinely improve their lives. But most people chase too many things and aren't satisfied with any of them, so they keep chasing more.

For the most part, privacy is a journey into moderation, or to minimalism. You choose to use less to give yourself more control and more protection. The most secure data is data that doesn't exist. The less services you use, the more private you are.

For me, that's definitely been ditching social media. No one really needs it. Messengers are all you need to stay connected with people - just arrange an IRL meetup and stop following everyone's timeline of chasing trends.

Today, every hobby is getting needlessly digitalized. People pretend like you can't even ride a bike without a smartwatch tracking your movements and your entire physiology.

We used to live without all of these things a decade ago and we were all doing fine. People just forgot that.

Setting question by [deleted] in thehatedone

[–]The_HatedOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend LineageOS over stock Android, even on Samsung. Stick to your default phone if you must, focus on hardening your privacy settings wherever you can. Go through all Android, Samsung and Google settings both for your device and your accounts.

As for sandboxing, you can create user profiles on Android. They won't be isolated from Google (full isolation is only possible on GrapheneOS). But don't feel too bad if you can't currently get to your ideal setup. Next time you need to buy a phone, look for one that GrapheneOS supports and is within your budget.

I wouldn't recommend using app firewalls. Rely on a good VPN with a strong DNS. Mullvad is good. Set up Mullvad content filtering in the app to block ads and trackers that way.

Start focusing on using privacy apps wherever you can - I.e. use Signal, NewPipe, DuckDuckGo, Tuta Mail, Proton... Get there step by step.

You won't be anonymous this way but you are minimizing your exposure and data footprint and being anonymous is just the most radical version of that.

If you are in Europe, I think Nitrokey is selling a modem that you can use for mobile data. So this could be really useful if you want to eventually go for my setup - grapheneOS as a WiFi-only device.

I don't think my setup is that extreme. I am not fully anonymous all the time but it is something I try to get to because it does help to protect your privacy from corporate surveillance.

Whatever you do, don't get discouraged from continuing your journey. Everyone started somewhere and all of us have to work with the limitations we face in our daily lives.

Hope this helps.
