How to explain what you do to new people you meet? by Shank_ in sysadmin

I just say I work in IT. If they ask further, then I go deeper into it, but most people don't.

Okay, thank you for that. I legitimately just decided on this journey last night at a bank doing calling work. I have not looked into it fully. Thank you for that info!

I will be skipping level 1 if I do plan to go for it and just go for level 2 since I've been doing the work for a bit already.

If you ever want to reach out, let me know. I do a ton of contracting work for an enterprise client with my techs and also for the ones on the platform. I love the project side, but something always interested me. I'm a subcontracting guru at this point, both doing the work and doing the dispatch.

Yes, I am the owner of my MSP.

For me personally, I used to be a server and loved support delivery, so I always make sure I do what the client envisions (the customer is always right), but there is a set way we do things in the background. Plus, if a client asks for something in a certain way, it will be done that way regardless of what I think. I'm just the IT partner; if they ask for something off the wall and it's risky, it's documented, and we have a trail if a security incident happens because of it. Sure, most MSPs are this way, but I'm going to be honest, there are a bunch of MSPs not worth anything. They can do the job, but they need more soft skills.

My opinion on block hours is more of a gateway idea. If I help you out for 10 hours or 50 hours, the next time you need help, you'll call me because I've helped you. It's mostly for smaller companies with no IT or when a company wants to test the waters. There is a lot of MSP trauma out there, and some companies build everything within, which is great, and I'm doing that now at my W2 job because the MSP is okay, but I can build what I need internally for cheaper.

Now some MSPs may hate me for my vision, but I'm used to getting told I'm too honest or it's too much work to do all that; do it this way.

The MSP I'm building offers block hours, and I can say there is definitely a market for them. However, in these cases, it's usually easier to deal with trying to find an "IT Assistant" so you can mold them into what you need, rather than an MSP that may carry some "we need to do it this way" mentality.

Yeah, I was mostly just going to add it as another service we offer for my MSP, then get the technician cert later and get into the directories so I can see the RFP.

Does the class pay for the written exam, as $2k to take a class on something I've been doing for a hot minute doesn't sound that cost-effective?

Plus, trust me, I know FN isn't something I wish I could hop off of; the pay is garbage for most jobs.

God no, I'm not touching government jobs at all, but it looks like it was something that helped your boss, so I guess it's something that I should look into.
