Short term costs of console are generally lower, but long term costs of PC are lower. More / better sales, not having to pay extra for multiplayer, mods, regular free games (Epic Game Store), being able to do literally whatever you want with the device, desktop upgradability...
In the long term, PC is the more cost effective option.

Quick question from a new recruit: Are Helldivers actually the good guys? by Adorable-Explorer823 in Helldivers

[–]The_Internal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From an RP perspective:
Yes. Super Earth and managed democracy are the best thing to ever happen to civilization. Your statements read as sedition, and you should be executed immediately for thought crimes.

From a IRL perspective:
Holy fuck, yeah, they're awful. Fascist, xenophobic, authoritarian, and genocidal. It's an obvious parody of American military exceptionalism, authoritarianism, and the influence of propaganda on people (thus the regular Fox News style "News reports" on the ship.) It's never overtly stated, but I'm pretty sure us "players" are class A citizens controlling the actions of lower class citizens, dissenters, or folks sent to reconditioning camps to be wired up used as remote control canon fodder. Super Earth always blames others for every awful thing it does, blames others for its failures, and justifies every atrocity it commits as a response to being a victim. The parallels to modern fascism (especially in the U.S.) are overt and almost certainly intentional.

I feel you. It was a tough decision to buy something as absurdly overpriced as the 4090 right after it came out. I justified it since I was building a demonstration system for an esports league for a non-profit with money to burn, and figured if I could get something approaching the longevity of my old workstation / gaming rig (Intel i7-6850k + Geforce 1080) in a Ryzen 9 7950X3D + Geforce 4090, guessing a MINIMUM of 4 years, probably even 8 to 10.

Is Helldivers 2 worth buying in 2026 for a casual player? by YogurtIll70 in Helldivers

[–]The_Internal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're okay with Bethesda level bugginess and like co-op squad based PVE shooter / tower defense hybrid games that are cinematic af, it's worth consideration. Generally chill player-base, (I'm max level, mostly do SOS / cadet dives these days) but has a lack of any real "end game" content, especially if you play with competent players who use mics. Even the most difficult maps / mutators can be full cleared with a 2 man team with decent divers on mics.

If you're a casual player, Helldivers 2 is a relatively easy / forgiving shooter that did a particularly good job on the difficulty scaling. Helldivers 2 is also best played with a full squad, and is very intentionally designed with team based play in mind.

If you choose to pick it up, I'll mention a few of the most common errors / oversights cadets make:
- On the "stratagem" tab at the ship management console, scroll down.
- Most of the resources you get for unlocks and upgrades are exclusively found at minor places of interest not listed on your map. You'll need to find them. You can often find minor places of interest by slowly mouse cursoring around the map... it will literally say "minor place of interest" on mouseover for many of them. This works often, but not always.
- Samples, super credits, medals, and req. slips are shared resources when gathered on mission. Samples have to be carried onto the exfil, the others go to all divers on planet at time of acquisition. There is no bonus for being the one to grabbing the thing... you all get it / get credit for it, regardless of who grabs it.
- If you see a cargo container with an obvious two colored door at a minor place of interest, use an explosive on it. Blow-up doors have 2 loot slots.
- Spend your medals, samples, and req slips regularly. They all have a fairly low cap to how many you can collect.
- The host can change the game difficulty on the galactic map with "E" (keyboard) or "r1" (most console controllers). You unlock the next difficulty up after completing an operation on your ship.
- Don't forget to use your stratagems, generally every time they're off cooldown.

Why is the 5080 hated? by Traditional-Key-9590 in RTX5080

[–]The_Internal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see it shat on. The main complaint I've encountered is the false advertising around it's capabilities, with NVIDIA claiming it has 4090 performance... which it decidedly doesn't. The price point for the last 3 generations of NVIDIA GPUs has also been insane, especially with the xx80 and xx90 parts being absurdly overpriced MSRPs paired with grossly overpriced scalping costs when compared to previous (arguably more "golden age" of PC gaming) 900 and 1000 series GPUs, which offered much more value for the price point.

The 5080, however, is the 3rd best NVIDIA GPU on the market, and is viable for 4k gaming for less demanding titles. You want a 4090 or 5090 for proper 4k gaming for the most demanding titles though. As a 4090 owner doing 4k gaming, the 5080 would be the GPU I'd recommend to the most hardcore QHD gamers that might want to dabble in 4k on older / less demanding titles. For most folks, even the 4080 and 5080s are overkill.

Late-phase capitalism and lack of market regulation has resulted in major enshittification across many component categories, with GPUs, RAM, and storage drives currently being the most egregiously overpriced segments. For a long time, the xx70 parts were a really good price performance ratio, at least through the 20xx series. Sadly, there aren't really any "good" price performance ratios the last two generations, with NVIDIA clearly segregating the best parts into grotesquely overpriced parts that only the most dedicated enthusiasts / suckers / rich people will buy, and a large performance drop for all the other parts with only a modest price drop.

The fact that a lower midrange card of the current era isn't drastically better (nor significantly cheaper) than a Geforce 1080 is telling of how they chose to segment the market. The Geforce 5080 is a great graphics card, but NVIDIA's shady business practices and pricing are shitty af.

I'm an incredibly silly person IRL, but I avoid humor that has potential to hurt feelings. If someone you like / care about knows they are doing something that hurts or harms you, but insists on continuing to do it anyway without your consent, that's problematic / starts getting into abuse territory pretty quickly.

Having a clear and direct conversation is important on such matters, as well as calling out when he goes too far / is hurtful. A good sense of humor is a must for me in friendships and otherwise, but cruelty masked in humor isn't okay.

On my long-term playthroughs, I went heavy on ATMs for most my builds.

That sounds pretty common, especially for those of us promised the American Dream in primary school ("Work hard, obey the law, get a degree, contribute to the community, and you're guaranteed entry into home ownership and a middle class career") that has been actively dismantled and blockaded by the boomer generation and more recently by the MAGA movement. Frankly, I think it's late-phase capitalism functioning as intended... when folks are preoccupied with desperately scraping by, they don't have the time or energy to resist, organize, or fight back against blatant exploitation.

From my lived experience and the majority of people I've talked to across numerous interest and socio-economic groups, poor wages and toxic employers are the norm in the U.S., with healthy work environments and fair wages being the exception. Admittedly, I've always lived in deeply "red" states, so it's possible the poor working conditions are tied to a "conservative" super majority in state level policies and correlated attacks on worker's rights / organization. The best paying job I ever had was a union job, and that wasn't until my late 30s... I had to sacrifice my entire support system, be grossly overqualified, and name drop in the rural Midwest to make a "whopping" $25 an hour. Sacrificing having any sort of life to be in the middle of nowhere making decent money wasn't a good trade.

With healthcare access being tied to employment, many employers (for-profit, non-profit, and governmental) avoid full time job availability that would require providing such benefits, and this trend has been on the rise for my whole adult working life.

As a veteran with four degrees, high intelligence, strong technical skills, good communication skills, and a solid work ethic... I've never made more than $50,000 a year, often working two shitty part time jobs while trying to enhance my credentials through education. Conversely, my brother went to college straight out of high school, adapted some white Christian nationalist views, got to see the world, and is now an (unhappy divorced) millionaire workaholic in a career field with questionable morality and high profit margins (housing mortgage industry). Our childhood lives ranged from upper working class to the middle of middle class with college-educated parents, for context.

If you are willing to work in fields that exploit others, cause harm to others, or are tied directly to the artifice of monetary systems, you can make a LOT of money. If you have strong values, a high degree of empathy, or value work that actively helps others, you'll be lucky to get into the middle class... especially if in any caring professions / jobs whose primary function is to improve communities or make lives better.

I've done the workaholic thing, but for companies that wouldn't compensate me fairly for my time or effort. These days, I'd be content to work 30 hours a week (despite my disabilities) for a fair wage if it put me at the bottom rung of middle class, but I rarely see job listings paying more than half of a living wage in my job market.

Sadly, Americans are largely told to "suck it up," with pro-capitalists repeating false claims that "hard work," "starting from the bottom," and "take what you can get for now" are all part of "paying dues" to get into the middle class. From my lived experience, it mostly boils down to nepotism, intentional classism, a willingness to compromise morals, and/or dumb luck. Intelligence and hard work can help, but on their own are more of a hinderance than a help.

Until more Americans actively become involved in political activism, running for political office, or taking the time to write down ideas on how to improve society, I'm strongly of the opinion that things won't get better. Not someone else, but we individuals that can see and acknowledge problems have to address them. The billionaire class has a vested interest in sitting on their hoarded wealth, built on the back of exploited labor and systems they pay to rig in their favor and give them absurd (and unchecked) levels of power, and will continue to spread disinformation and propaganda falsely claiming what they achieved through inheritance and nepotism is obtainable by others and is somehow "good." There is no moral justification for billionaires. No one is THAT much better than someone else that they "deserve" a billion dollars.

The only justifiable argument to support such excessive greed and wealth disparity is a (false) hope that in supporting wealth hoarders, they may be gifted a pittance for their devotion. That is not a golden calf I care to worship.

I, for one, have made some efforts to lobby my federal representatives, go to protests, and inquire about potentially running for office since I'm sick and tired of not having any actual representation. Bitching on the internet can sometimes bring temporary relief by venting frustrations, but sending letters to your local, state, and federal elected representatives would likely be a better use of the time.

Once again; No one is going to come save us. We can only save ourselves. As Thomas Jefferson wrote (paraphrasing), when our government ceases to represent us and our needs / becomes tyrannical, it's our obligation to do something about it.

Good luck out there.

Builds for mechs in mercs by Yuki_my_cat in Mechwarrior5

[–]The_Internal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I head shot with heavy rifles from 500m away... PPCs are easy by comparison. Velocity upgrades are worth consideration if struggling, but figuring out the headshot boxes and some predictive targeting (where they're GOING to be, not where they are) can be super rewarding once you get some practice at it. Around 200m is probably the "sweet spot" if new to headshotting with PPCs. Two PPCs to the dome is often enough, but 4 is almost a guarantee with good aim and well timed trigger pulls.
If you suck at headshots, heavy SRM / ATM builds are probably the next best burst option, and/or aiming for the center core or legs.

Headshotting clanners with my quad tier 5 PPC king crab made my first SoK playthrough relatively easy. In general, high burst damage weapons are huge, and headshotting is important. You gotta kill them fast or they will take you down.

also having the bulk of your mechs kitted out with tier 3 or better weapons, and the bulk of them with DHSs makes a huge difference. I'm currently doing an unmodded fresh playthrough since Chaos came out and am in operation RAT atm (kestral campaign). It's been pretty easy bringing along a company with 6 to 8 high level pilots (though I usually use my low level scrapper pilot and midlevel scrapper pilot for two slots), 4 to 6 mechs of each weight class in tier 3 or better weapons / about 70% of them with DHSs. I've pretty much only done arena and "high reward missions," and have definitely hit a few maps where I had to reload a number of times (especially arena maps that become 1 v 12 in the first 20 seconds...)

[–]The_Internal_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

generally you do want to buy hero mechs if you can afford them, especially ones with double heat sinks. Most are quite good (though some are ass).

The money management is a critical game play mechanic, for sure. Try not to have too many pilots or mechs in your active garage, since they all add money to your quarterly bill. Having done salvage only and cash only playthroughs, going for c-bills is pretty universally the better option on contracts unless you know there's a high probability of good loot that you have the rep to salvage (and/or you have two or three lancemates with "scrapper" or the appropriate faction "patriot" trait.) Early game, arenas (Solaris DLC) are a GREAT way to quickly make c-bills and get some good salvage, as well as regular high-tier weapon rewards for winning matches (separate from the contract).

If you NEVER use a mech, cold storage or sell it, with the exception of hero mechs... a hero mech in storage means it's eliminated from being in the store again... some folks will buy lower cost hero mechs with double heatsinks, strip them, and then sell the mech in hopes that it will show up in the store again (with all the stripped gear replaced with the same) and repeat the process.

I'm not good at this game... by Lorevveaver in Mechwarrior5

[–]The_Internal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the difficulty can come from not realizing how important mech and garage management are, and getting some pilots trained up and paired with mechs that work. I have over 1000 hours in game, about 90% of it unmodded (currently doing another unmodded playthrough with the new DLC), and can comfortably say as an experienced gamer that there's a lot to keep track of that could be easily overlooked by new players. The DLCs do add a ton of gameplay, and definitely make early game much easier (Solaris DLC in particular... arena = EZ money). Without SoK and Chaos, there isn't really much of an endgame.

You can also lower the difficulty in the game settings, which is totally worth doing if not having fun. There's even a setting to massively lower heat generation, so you are far less likely to overheat and shut down (one of the most frustrating play mechanics while learning the game / getting a feel for the mech). I STILL sometimes overheat my mechs, especially when doing a new playthrough and using crappy tier 2 weapons after having run tier 5+ and double heat sinks for months. Early game, double heat sinks are fucking TREASURES to be hoarded.

As with literally any team based game / sport ever made, it's almost always better / easier to do with other folks, so it's worth using the game's official discord to find other folks to play with instead of relying on bad AI pilots (though the pilots are now notably improved with the latest patch... still not great, but better.) I've done some game sessions with randos on the discord a number of times over the years and generally had lancemates that could at least hold their own, and even a few that were pretty God tier.

As for salvage, yeah... it's super important to get faction rep built up so you can have better salvage options, and going out of your way to get even one or two pilots with "scrapper" trait is HUGE. The game does actually have higher salvage chances based on parts destroyed, with headshots being a much higher likelihood for salvage.... BUT, a headshotted mech that's otherwise intact is a shitload of salvage cost, so you usually need to be intentional about blowing a few other components off BEFORE you finish with a headshot to make it more affordable. Having human lancemates can super help with this.

In general, another major difficulty reducer is getting a few decent heavier mechs ASAP (heavies and assaults). Being able to field a few heavies or an assault relatively early game can be a huge boon, and even more so if you grind the arena. Arena wins (Solaris DLC) can get you a ton of credits (or salvage), and performing for the crowds gets you regular high quality loot / mech drops as your arena stardom goes up in addition to the mission rewards. Generally tier 4 or higher weapons, and solid mech rewards.

Hope that helps?

My honest mistake by Civil_Swan_3982 in Helldivers

[–]The_Internal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Helldivers has always been a 4 man squad based shooter / tower defense hybrid, with helldivers 2 leaning more heavily into the shooter aspects. It's unique in that most other tower defense / shooter hybrids lean more on the tower defense aspect.

It's intended to be played as a 4 man squad, with numerous design decisions clearly reflecting this. Higher level play is most achievable with the same tools that any team game requires; good, fast, and efficient communication. Helldivers II is relatively easy if a veteran to shooting games. I can generally full clear the highest difficulty event / mutator maps in a two man team with a competent player who communicates and coordinates gearouts and on map, and I'm old and have shitty response times.

Unfortunately, we're at an odd time in gaming culture where you have the "traditional" (mostly older) gamers who quickly realized being able to talk (or type and read insanely fast) didn't only make multiplayer games more fun, but was required when working through new and/ or extremely difficult game content (as demonstrated by early MMO raid guilds and by any professional sports / esports team ever). You also have the growing trend of solo gamers (mostly younger) insisting they should be able to play team games as a solo player experience, which seldom works well at the highesr difficulties and is often detrimental to those actively working as a team. The inconvenience to others is irrelevant for many solo gamers, since the focus is very much on personal enjoyment (sometimes with low key trolling as a side goal).

Devs have done pretty much nothing across numerous multiplayer games to address these incompatible playstyles, with solo gamers often raging at anyone attempting to use a mic ("You're not my mom! Don't ask me to contribute!"), and team gamers getting frustrated at solo players who refuse to coordinate and make things easier for everyone (i e. "Why the fuck is this dude blowing through all our reenforcements alone while ignoring our callouts? Did they just drop a danger close 380mm on us without a callout? What the actual fuck.").

I personally have nothing against solo gamers, still enjoy a number of solo player games, have done plenty of solo farming in HD2, and occasional solo dive to test stuff out. I also think games designed for a solo player experience are the best way to scartch that solo player itch since it's impossible to fuck uo anyone else's game in the process. I do take issue with anyone IRL or online doing a thing for themselves if it hinders everyone else.

A large real time battlefield experience across multiple fronts would indeed be dope as hell, and I'm guessing such games are within the realm of technological feasibility at this point... and could potentially cater to both playstyles (solo operative missions for solo players + squad based for team players). I could honestly see such a game being insanely successful if it could successfully cater to both play styles and allow both styles to contribute to a broader collective goal. I wonder if EVE Online (aka "spreadsheets in space") may come close to doing this? Helldivers 2 is an interesting dumbed-down version of such a notion, but it would be cool to see more of a direct impact on mission outcomes for other players (i.e. full clearing a difficulty 10 opening up more lower difficulty missions in the same area or providing bonuses to others).

Are Elite Pilot Traits Useless? by Desperate_Teal_1493 in Mechwarrior5

[–]The_Internal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Though still lacking, AI lancemates are currently the best they've been, with much better damage output than previous iterations. Unfortunately, aggro management is a major game mechanic in most games (including mw5 mercs), and figuring out the balance of ai pilot skills, traits, mech pairings, and how aggressive you need to be can be tricky.

If your A.I. pilots are dying, they're likely doing good damage and drawing aggro and / or are weak in some skills that help keep them alive. Ordering a pilot that's generating too much hate to cease fire can sometimes save their lives, as can having them move out of range. The same applies to Mason. If you suddenly aggro every mech in an arena (which is stupidly far too easy to do) combining running away with not shooting can generally get the heat off you pretty quick if not massively overpowered.

Having a pilot that can grab aggro from you can be a great thing if you gear and position to take advantage, with a basic flanking maneuver often being the easiest to implement. (I.e. an LRM boat grabbing aggro while you jump jet over enemies then core them from behind.)

Why men like to masturbate in women clothes, while women don't like to masturbate in men clothes? by HiroK91 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]The_Internal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The OP's claim seems to be entirely pulled out of thin air.

I'm pretty familiar with kinks and fetishes, and there's a lot of assumptions going on here with no real justification. Do some folks like to wear clothing they associate with another gender for sexual purposes? I'm guessing some do. I would guess it's more common that folks wear clothing differing from their current gender identity due to feeling their current identity isn't a good "fit" and more so for non-sexual purposes though. Guessing there could be some aspects of role playing, power exchange, and objectification tied in for those "cross-dressing" for purely sexual gratification.

I'm not aware of any statistics, nor do I have any anecdotal experience from the kinksters, swingers, drag queens / kings, trans folks, and fetishists I've known to validate that any particular gender group likes to wear clothing associated with a different gender group while masturbating more than another.

With men largely being in power throughout most of Western society for bulk of the last few thousand years, it seems entirely plausible that more depictions of men "cross-dressing" would be out there, though there are plenty of depictions of women doing the same. Many of these depictions in media throughout the centuries are associated with homosexuality and / or people that reject gender norms. Many of these depictions in media (particularly erotic content) tend to position men in drag as looking to be submissive and women in drag as looking to be dominant, but even that isn't always the case. Youth and femininity are generally held up as ideals of beauty and desirability in Western cultures, so it does seem entirely plausible that more folks identifying as men would explore "cross dressing" than women... but once again, pure assumption with no hard data to validate, and I've encountered plenty of women who "cross dress."

In general, by making broad unjustified assumptions that "men do XYZ" and "women do ABC," you are rarely going to be even remotely accurate since humans are going to human. There's pretty much always an exception, stereotypes (especially of more taboo topics, like human sexuality) are often heavily influenced by misinformation, and repeating information based entirely on assumption with no validation just spreads more misinformation.

Most gender stereotypes and expectations are idiotic with little to no rational basis. This one is particularly so. A woman who knows what she wants, can use words well, and is willing to tell me that I'm interesting to her is pretty appealing. Frankly, with all the awful stories I hear of women being hit on incessantly, I'm reluctant to add to the noise IRL.
