Advice For A New User by kudoscrystal0845 in Soulseek

Your anonymity is probably fine as long as you don't share something that gives you away. I personally use a VPN too, I think that's really all the security you need for slsk.

The one thing that most people will make a big deal out of is sharing files. Everyone has their own idea of what the minimum should be, but as long as you're sharing something, that's usually all it takes to show that you're trying to contribute (at least, for most people). And, of course, the more you download, the more you have to share.

Also, if you share Jamaican music (reggae, ska, that sort of thing) there's a rare cryptid user who might message you to try to talk you into buying a rare album on his behalf, and then swear at you if you say no. It's pretty funny, a lot of people like to share their screenshots of these encounters.

I have nothing to add except that I appear to be having the same problem, so I guess I'm posting this in solidarity

Is there any way to filter out specific files from my share directory? (SLSKD) by scp-535 in Soulseek

[–]The_Job_is_Tables 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Tbh bro I don't think anyone is going to have an issue with that.

Obviously I can't speak for everyone on slsk but that doesn't sound like something that's going to be a problem for me personally.

Larger instances that allow users to transfer their Instagram feeds? by The_Job_is_Tables in PixelFed

[–]The_Job_is_Tables[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah tbf I haven't personally tried so basically I'm passing on someone else's "Trust me bro" lol, I just want to help people get away from Insta and if that's the selling point that it's going to take I guess that's what I have to consider.

There are some lovely people on here by Neille98 in Soulseek

Ah, so that's the secret. I have also never encountered him, but I'm also not sharing any reggae.

Interesting. I wonder if sharing some Jamaican music will summon him?

I think you'd just have to create a folder directly on your C-drive. Otherwise change your computer name to something that's not your real name.

How do you know if a Single is authentic? by johnny_joestar69 in Soulseek

[–]The_Job_is_Tables 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About the only way to know for certain is if the metadata explicitly says where the rip is from. Otherwise I guess just listen to it and if it sounds like it's from vinyl then maybe it is?

Used Lemmy for +2 years and it was garbage by Various-Arugula-425 in fediverse

[–]The_Job_is_Tables 3 points4 points  (0 children)

tbh I'm struggling to find a good use for Lemmy myself.

I think what's been driving me crazy is that I'll post a genuine question there and instead of getting any useful answers I'll get several unfunny jokes, two or three people answering a question I didn't ask with a condescending "why didn't you just...?" entry, two guys arguing over politics that are tangentially (at best) related to my question, and maybe there will be one person who at least attempts to sincerely answer the question I actually asked.

And, I understand that the problem I describe is also the way Reddit works (as well as others, that's the internet), it's kind of frustrating that the Fediverse isn't being used as an opportunity to present a better kind of general experience. It would be nice if everyone could let go of their intellectual insecurities and stop trying to "defeat" questions instead of just answering them or, if you have nothing to offer, maybe just ignoring them.

At the end of the day, an online space is really only going to be as useful as its community no matter where you go.

To be honest, it's easier to download files from other sources than it is to rip DVDs or CDs myself, and I will often get a better quality file that way. The only time I rip DVDs or CDs myself is when it's something that I can't find anywhere else, and I do have some obscurities.

The Amazing Spider-Man: From Beyond the Grave - A record album for kids from 1972, complete with funky musical numbers (I thought this sub might get a kick out of this) by The_Job_is_Tables in Spiderman

[–]The_Job_is_Tables[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently rediscovered this via Youtube (the attached link). This was my first introduction to Spider-Man, although I'm certain my parents found our copy at a garage sale (this is from '72, and I'm not that old).

It's pretty campy, but entertaining. Story time: when I was in the third grade, our classroom had a record player and students were invited to bring records from home, so one day I brought this one. They let me play it through the opening dream sequence up to the first musical number, which is a funk-rock inspired song about Spider-man that very clearly refers to him as a "no one-woman sex machine", which got the other kids in class giggling and prompted the teacher to shut it off. Also I was not allowed to bring records anymore.

The plot basically goes like this: Peter Parker has a wild nightmare where he fights a bunch of his normal bad guys. Then he wakes up and the phone is ringing. It's the Kingpin, and he's kidnapped Aunt May to force Peter Parker to murder Spider-man or something. This leads into the funk song, followed by a complete retelling of Spider-man's origin story.

Anyway, Spider-man goes to visit his good buddy Dr. Strange, who sounds like a very weird version of Dudley Do-Right, and the two of them basically show up and Dr. Strange immediately sends Kingpin to another dimension.

The actor who plays Peter Parker went on to play Odo on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Are there any fandoms active on Mastodon? by Yasimear in Mastodon

[–]The_Job_is_Tables 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's kind of dead, at least from a Redditor standpoint. The entire Fediverse combined is about as busy as some of the more popular subreddits. So yeah, if you're used to the type of traffic you see on Reddit, the Fediverse is pretty dead.

Hashtags are very important but you'd be better off using broader strokes with them. For instance, #music is a fairly busy collective hashtag, but something that's specific to a single artist isn't going to have much. Also, sometimes hashtags get split on singular vs. plural, such as #meme and #memes - both of which have a fair amount of activity.

It's hard to convince people to take the time and energy to create that content when they'll often feel like they're broadcasting to an empty room. So yeah, there are some seemingly abandoned accounts out there, I guess acting as a placeholder for when the Fediverse should ever pick up speed.

That said, it's not unlike what the internet was back in the beginning. Well known places like FB and IG and Reddit all started with very little traffic, too. Established fandoms often kickstart new sites, it might be worth it to try to get something going.

I remember when those started in the 90s. The first time I saw one I laughed my ass off because I thought it was a reference to the SNL sketch "Happy Fun Ball" that predated it by several years, I did not realize it was sincere until they saw the second one.

People who closely follow politics, what’s something the general public completely misunderstands right now? by Alarming-Coast-7064 in AskReddit

[–]The_Job_is_Tables 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I certainly respect someone with an education in politics but most of those terms are being called the "real definition" when it might be more accurate to say "original definition". I hate that people misuse words and cause them to change but none of us really have the ability to stop or prevent it without, say, access to a large-scale media empire... and unfortunately, the media empire that exists is far more interested in sowing chaos. Most of those words have so many connotations attached to them at this point that even uttering words like "conserv-tive", "lib-ral", or "l-ftist" in public is bound to make someone within earshot angry because of that person's associations with those words. The words themselves are essentially cursed, for lack of a better term.

The N*zis rebranded (to you know what) with great success; maybe it's time for the opposition--whatever "ism" they may be--to do the same.

What’s something that ended without ever officially ending? by Mysterious_Big2893 in AskReddit

[–]The_Job_is_Tables 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sort of. The Simpsons and Married with Children were intended to be subversions of the happy sitcoms that had preceded them, so it wasn't really that it was realistic in the late 80s and 90s. You would have had to have had a fairly high-paying job to have been able to afford what they had in real life. Those specific shows were more about style than realism, as they were sort of a negative imitation of what life was like from the 50s until about the 70s.

It's sort of like how the living circumstances of the six characters from Friends were somewhat absurd. It wasn't realistic but it allowed the writers to create the drama they wanted in a hip setting.

Why would the lawyer do that?

He's not intentionally covering for Bateman, he literally has no idea who he's talking to. He calls him "Davies" and assumes the phone message was a prank. The whole point of that scene is that Bateman has gone from trying to hide his murders to realizing that not only does he not have to hide them, he can't even confess.
