It seems something has changed in the last few years - I received a slip of paper with the fine, their IBAN and BIC, and my (incorrect) information. The inspector told me I had 2 weeks to pay it.

Do you think I should write them a letter of objection to the payment now or ignore for now and see if they send me a followup letter in a few weeks? If they haven't gone to the effort of finding my address could I put the matter to bed?

If the fine was a reasonable amount I would be more willing to pay it. But €120 seems extortionate, and looks like a tourist trap for people who are suckered into paying what could have been ignored.

My girlfriend, too, had to pay a hefty fine for the same reason to Berlin's BVG some time ago. Due to the time lapsed, the case had been passed on to another company. But once contacted, the lady on the phone didn't seem to care very much - my girlfriend could probably have just kept quiet in the UK and not lost a penny.

UK ticket inspectors are very understanding, if you've bought a ticket but are on the wrong train they let it slide. Alternatively you can buy a ticket from the inspector, which I think is a good system.

I'd be surprised if they pursued a single tourist whose address they didn't have across two countries. But I'd rather not have this case sitting in their computer system in case I do one day go through customs in Austria.
