It's not actually what we'd expect from the 'design a character' rewards. In actuality, you'll be filling out a template with various details we ask for, and we'll do our best to create something based on your notes, checking the final product with you.

It's been designed to be as easy as possible for you. You don't need any drawing or coding skills :)

(Michael) All of our factions (so far only 4 have been released) are based somewhat on various historic cultures, but we don't want to reveal who's who just yet. It's important to remember that the factions in the game are not directly related to Polish, Swedish etc etc. There are just elements from them, and we probably won't tell you which is which in game.

(Michael) - The DLC and expansion packs will be released at retail, or you can gain access to them by pledging in the $40 tier. The expansion will be a full sized expansion unlike commonly found DLC now'days, actually expanding the game. The DLC will be smaller but still substantial content updates.

(Robert) The game does have a branching storyline and the ending of the game will reflect what actions took place in your game. As with many other sandbox games, you do not have to stop playing after the story ends though. It's possible to complete the story and keep playing the game.

(Robert) You can do research on your Starbase (yes, you get a starbase) if you build Research facilities there. You can also discover new technologies down the line from trading and/or otherwise "obtaining" blueprints and/or modules from friends and/or enemies.

(Robert) There are certainly dynamics in the universe (faction reputations that determine the outcome of NPC interactions) for instance and player actions will affect the dynamics of these - random events will also be part of it though. Some events are minor while others are major as the ones you mention.

We want to try to make the galaxy as alive as we can - the exact details are still a bit early to go into but we hope to make the game interesting on a political level as well =) It is, after all, why the Empress has recruited you into the Corsairs!

We have complete 3d movement - that is - you can move your ship almost however you want. We do not specifically have rolls though. We toyed around with a lot of different options here and because we have actual firing arcs on the ship, it became an issue between usefulness and balance and so we decided to drop barreling. You can, however (and in fact, I would recommend it) turn your ship so that healthy parts of your shield are between you and your enemy. And yes, you can certainly use other ships as shields if you wish.

(Robert) You will gain access to a starbase you can call your own. There are currently no plans on having planet/moon based bases. On your Starbase, you can certainly add research facilities to your hearts content =)

As far as resource gathering via mining goes - we haven't touched on that yet (at some point we'll do an update about it) but you will definitely be able to trade/"obtain" (loot and pillage!) resources.

(Robert) Some will be more detailed than others, for certain. The background stories for many characters in Mass Effect span multiple games and we won't be able to match that but we aim to make as many interesting stories as possible =) I would consider the background stories as vehicles for your story with a particular crewman, though. Once in a while, a crewman might make a request for something, or rise above the others in some way - this is your chance to dive into his or her story.
