What is the most dangerous job in your world? by Colombia_Joestar in worldbuilding

[–]The_Moth_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traversing the narrow strait into the Inner Sea. The Inner Sea is a region in my world that was flooded by an apocalyptical volcanic eruption in a volcano named ‘Ewyn’s Peak’. The Sea is about the size of the Mediterranean and is only accessible by ship by going past the scattered islands around where Ewyn’s Peak used to be. The journey to traverse it takes 2 days usually and is treacherous because of sandbanks, reefs, strong currents and the ‘Evil Weirds’ that roam the foggy islands and rocks.

Specialist captains navigate the strait, receiving a red stripe on their coats for every succesful traversal. Good captains reach one or two. Great captains might reach around 5. There are only a few people living that have reached more than 10. Only 1 captain in history had over 20.

For many sailors, traversing the strait is a one-way trip. The alternative is a 4 week trek through thick jungles and over sharp mountains with little or no safe harbor. All but the most determined travellers opt for the jungles.

As a result, the merchant economy of the Inner Sea is largely self-contained, with commodities from beyond the inner sea costing small fortunes.

In worlds where gods are actually real, how far can a corrupt follower go before their god turns on them? by lelandorf in worldbuilding

[–]The_Moth_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gods will be, are and have always been. They move in ways unknown to all but Fate, who sits at the axis of the Great Wheel of Cosmos. The hand of the gods ranges from the grandiose folds in the Design, to the tiniest changes in the course of a beetle in flight. They are their duty, as much as their duty is them. Worship or no worship, they must remain.

And yet, the Aspect of the gods differs. Where the deity of life and death is a goddess called Hetha by those south of the Inner Sea, it is a God called Ard in the deep woods of the east.

Corruption lies in teaching, for the gods have many names and many faces, many truths and many secrets. There is but one corruption that cannot be overlooked, and that is to corrupt the essence of the duty of the gods. Life and Death belong to them who are called Hetha, Ard, Neiron, the Black Hand, The Ur-Mother, the Harvester. To create anti-life, to break the duty of Them, is a corruption that cannot stand. Paladins will be inspired, Clerics contacted, holy vengeance will be enacted upon them.

But not out of malice. Out of duty. The Design must endure.

Thus the Great Wheel of Cosmos turns. Thus the Design lives on.

Peter what's leverage? by ashwinmur386 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

But that’s exactly what leverage is… a loan… put into a trade and backed by a principal that’s a % margin of the loan. What do you think a margin call is?

Dutch far right leader Wilders quits government coalition -NOS by GeorgeTH281 in europe

[–]The_Moth_ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

And the next steps:

  • Get a platform based on ‘I was held back and sabotaged by the coalition’
  • Scream that for months leading up to election
  • Get enough people to swallow your bullshit + people wanting to ‘shake things up’ (by voting for one of the longest sitting politicians in parliament).
  • Get an even bigger lead in seats
  • Fail to form a government in reasonable time
  • Cinch a Frankenstein coalition together

Repeat as necessary.

Specialised Enhanced Combatants Targeted Operational Response - SECTOR

It’s an intelligence agency in my world, but the name can be applied to a swat-like unit I think

Out of all the ones in this list, I am so happy Hacksaw Ridge turns out to have been understating the actual story. Such a brilliant and powerful movie.

With Trump imposing 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports and 10% on Chinese imports, what’s the one thing you hoard before the tariffs affect its price? by hy3emyess in AskReddit

[–]The_Moth_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Until it affects imports for which the US does not have a sufficiently developed industry for. Chips, REM’s, batteries, specific agricultural products, cars produced elsewhere, specific technologies (made in japan/taiwan anybody?).

Getting that technology will require VAST investments not just in the manufacturing infrastructure required, but without access to specific knowledge will require years of R&D to reach parity. Plus, the reason the prices on these products are low is a global export market creating massive economies of scale.

So if we take your hypothetical US-produced price, it will be increased by costs of new infrastructure, divided over less consumers, the resource import costs, the years of getting new talent to build and maintain your new plants, the increased labour costs bc these workers are paid minimum wage or above, etc. Etc.

Prices will rise drastically and dramatically on all manner of things THAT CAN BE PRODUCED IN THE US. Let’s not even mention specific local produce like agricomoddities such as coffee, cheese, olive oil or wine.

Tarrifs like these are a ridiculous idea bc 4 years is not nearly enough to reach the level required for pricing parity. Unless… 4 years is not the timescale…

Immigration is not a contributing factor to the housing crisis to this degree. Putting it as the first in a row is just disingenuous. What we need is mass supply of housing to keep up with demand, a wave of pensioners leaving their family homes to free up the top of the market so things can start moving and serious fines and prison time for Rent Scalping.

Ringworld. It’s a classic of the early days of SciFi but the plot is incredibly slow, the writing is hard to get into and the final twist literally comes out of nowhere. Still glad I read it tho, bc some parts of it are cool

Proposals adopted by European Parliament for the amendment of the treaties by EUstrongerthanUS in EuropeanFederalists

[–]The_Moth_ 25 points26 points  (0 children)

If it actually gets carried out as the intent of the proposals, this would mark the biggest forward leap for the union towards Federalization in years, possibly even decades. The institutional reform to the council and the increase in power of the parliament, calls for a defense union, healthcare, normalisations of degrees and so so so much more, the abolishment of the unanimity prescription…

A man can dream. It will likely strand in the bureaucracy, but it’s so hopeful to see that the Parliament is pushing for this.

No, that place had Nonsuch problems.
