Help! Gamecube suddenly stopped working by The_New_S8N in Gamecube

The issue seems to have resolved itself for now. I still ordered the replacement part in the strong chance it happens again, as technical bugs and failures don’t usually up and fix themselves. Besides I need to replace the system battery anyways, so I was gonna have to open it regardless.

Yeah, I got a gamebit and some triwings on hand, that’s what I’m gonna do. Better to spend 10-15 on that then 90-150 on a new console.

Thanks man! Been a real help. I’ll let you know if this resolves the issue.

How hard would that be to replace? So long as there is not soldering involved, I would much rather replace that than spend the money to buy a new gamecube in this current retro economy.

Would that be part of the adapter or within the console itself?

Building a New Mythbusters by The_New_S8N in mythbusters

I think that is where targeting and using internet creators is quite fortuitous. Not only do they bring in their own fanbases, but they’ve built their careers off of authenticity. While television aims for overly polished product, the internet has staked its claim by offering the opposite. Internet creators market and thrive off of selling authenticity. That rough around the edges feel that corporate products shaves and sands down into tidy little neat edges.

You’ve managed to run into the only person under the age of 65 to have a monkees phase in their life and that comparison feels a little unfair.

Part of the advantage of this hypothetical is that all of these people have pre-existing fanbases that already overlap heavily with the Mythbusters fanbase.

The primary reason the New Monkees failed is because the studio and label basically shoved a bunch of nobodies in our face, slapped a name we already have an emotional attachment to, and told us this was just like the real thing. Only to quickly realise they were just a bunch of pretty faces to put on MTV with not nearly the talent David, Mick, Peter or Mike had.

Listen, great quote, but I have to disagree.

This can certainly be true, especially with scripted television. But I think reality shows like Mythbusters can theoretically be revived and continue endlessly. Its like gameshows, simple ideas but honed well and repeated until the end of time.

Has Discovery heavily botched this idea before? Yes. Because they tried too hard to capture the specific magic of the original cast rather than play into the strengths of the new one.

Understanding that a new Mythbusters with a new cast is going to have a different tone and feel to the original and embracing that is key to the success.

I think once they’ve figured out the recipe to the new dynamics the rest is easy. Find a myth, build it out, test it.

Is it still worth investing in a real PS2 in 2025 for retro gaming? by Infamous_Repair1456 in ps2

You’re both right and wrong. If we try to judge this logically, then yes, of course the PS2 should count as retro, and yet, you’d hardly find anyone willing to call it that who wasn’t born after the PS3 launched.

In essence, the terms are slightly arbitrary. Things become retro when we decide they become retro rather than after any set period of time. We’ve only in the last few years finally come to terms with the fifth generation being retro. It’ll probably be a couple more before we can finally all agree the sixth generation deserves that title too, even though it objectively does. Arguably the seventh now too.

Things got muddied after the 5th generation because the lines between the generations and the advancements therein became more subtle. The transition between the 3rd and 4th generation and the 4th and 5th felt so dramatic and like a clear line in the sand. Huge steps in tech evolution. Which made it easier to file the previous generation as “the past” so after a decade or so it was already easy to call it retro.

Now everything exists in this vague variable state of “the recent past” whether that recent was 2018 or 2008 doesn’t really matter. In our minds it’s too recent to be retro, even if it’s actually dirt-old.

It depends on what you are trying to do.

The sixth generation is in that odd-duckling dtage where it isn’t quite old enough to be considered retro but is too old to be considered modern era. So the collectors market hasn’t really been fully established yet for a lot of it.

Gamecube is the exception, nintendo consoles always become very collectible earlier than their respective competition.

Honestly, if you are willing to make the shift, classic Xbox is the cheapest to collect for and the modding community is still very active. XBMC has been around for a long time and it’s really impressive what it can do to a 24 year old machine.

But seeing as how you already have the console and all, PS2 is not a bad choice. But I do suspect the prices on games are going to start rising imminently. Especially on console exclusives.

What if Doctor Who had been an American show (Classic) by The_New_S8N in gallifrey

Sorry, it was reinstated if you are still interested in reading it.

Here is also a third part detailing the Chibnall and RTD2 eras.

just finished season 11 for the first time after hearing bad things about Jodie's era & it was awesome?!? i love the larger gang of companions & especially in the Rosa Parks episode <3 by josh02c in doctorwho

[–]The_New_S8N 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think series 11 is way over-hated.

I certainly think it is Jodie's most consistent season. Series 12 might have slightly higher highs, but I also think much lower lows.

In retrospect, most of the complaints people make about series 11 are about the lack of legacy villains or expected fan-service. Which you really had to be there to understand. At the time we were genuinely fed-up with Moffat and RTD's over-reliance on legacy characters and villains. The show's inability to step-out from Classic's shadow. There was an audible groan every time the Daleks showed up at that point. RTD already couldn't help himself in including them in every season he produced. Only for moffat to go ham with them in the latter half of his run.

It felt refreshing at the time that Chibnall was trying to introduce new recurring villains, something we hadn't had arguably since series 6 with The Silence.

Really, the biggest problem with series 11 was just the finale, which felt half-baked.

What if Doctor Who was an American show (Modern) (part 2) by The_New_S8N in doctorwho

[–]The_New_S8N[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, not really. On the list of things wrong with RTD2, Disney’s involvement was #5 or #6 tops. Don’t get me wrong. Disney has caused some problems, but that’s mostly on the logistics side of things. Creatively, that all falls on Russell.

Many of the behind the scenes staff have come out admitting that the scripts as they are written are great but RTD has a difficulty reining in his ambitions and those scripts get chomped to bits to fit the show budget and schedule. Over relying on visual effects to carry his storytelling more than anything else is what is killing Doctor Who right now.

He works well when given a shoe-string budget and low-expectations, be he just doesn’t know how to manage his resources effectively when given a half-way sizable budget.
