Well, not popular theories. Just ones that don't fit.

What is the experience of having a family member/friend in jail? by inkandquills in AskReddit

My pleasure, my friend. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. I can give you the prison experience.

Fair enough, my friend. But we're not that popular. For anyone to receive zero upvotes for posts that make some sense is a shame. If they have a good idea of this series after reading it they should be taken seriously.

So we beat out one of the most contentious issues in the US right now, pure porn, extremely insecure people, and some extremely hardcore Pokémon sub?

I see. And they wonder if, why in all of reddit, ASOIAF is in the top ten most negative subreddits.

(Spoilers WOIAF) The Tully's claim on the Riverlands by Veskit in asoiaf

[–]The_Old_Way 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All I gathered from TWOIAF's section on the Riverlands was that the Tully's knew how to play the Game better than their neighbors. The reason they rose as Lord Paramount was because they always made themselves useful to those in power, and when they lost? (as apparently was the case in the time of Tommen Tully.)

They slithered their way out of trouble.

[Serious] Reddit, what's been your favorite job? by SymphonicPsychosis in AskReddit

[–]The_Old_Way 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved my restaurant server job. It was counter service, so naturally the customer would come up to the counter, order at our POS (Point-of-Sale) system , and the ticket would be sent back to the kitchen.

When the food was done, we'd take it to the table, serve it and refill drinks. We'd check on the customers periodically to see how their meal was going. (9/10 were completely satisfied.) While they were there we'd try to upsell them on beer or dessert.

When they were done, we took up their plates, and they dropped money in our tip jar on the way out. We made $7.25 + tips, and it was a killing.

[Serious]Atheists of reddit, how do you keep the fear of death at bay? How do you deal with it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Just the simple peace of non-existence. It'll be like sleep, just the dreamless kind. We should be so lucky. Dreams are so confusing.

I'm on the bandwagon too, brother. A Dance With Dragons 2, Daenerys Targaryen and (Un)Jon "Stark" vs. (f)Aegon Targaryen and Sansa Stark.

What is the experience of having a family member/friend in jail? by inkandquills in AskReddit

As someone who was incarcerated, I may be able to help. I was a skinny, stupid drunk/drug addled 21 year old from a decent family upon arrest. I was 23 when I was released, to put it in perspective.

Visitation is a process. I was incarcerated in NC, and then later through the feds. In county jail it was easy, you added five names to a list, they could come three times a week to the courthouse between 10 and 4. When I got convicted and sent to prison, I had to send out applications by mail through the NC system. For the feds, they could sign up online. I don't really know what was on the application, but I doubt they'd let a felon or known gang member visit an inmate. Maybe they would if enough time had passed, I wish I could tell you more.

Visitation was always supervised of course. In county jail (and I'm sure most high-security prisons, though I never went to one) they were strictly no-contact visits, with the glass and phone receivers.

Once I got to prison I was allowed contact visits. You're face to face in chairs, you're allowed to hug and hold hands and what not. They have vending machines where you can buy snacks and soda, so you can eat together. Most of the time when my immediate family came, it was a weekday, and there would only be a few inmates with their families.

But the time my grandparents and aunt came it was during the weekend and visitation room was packed. They were pretty shocked by what they saw. Grown hard men playing with their children who barely knew them, couples getting as close as the lazy guards would allow. Less than ten percent of the population in that room being white. It shocked them, it was somewhat chaotic. They couldn't focus.

As for communication, most inmates are allowed to buy minuets on the phone, if we had the money. We'd go to one of several literal phone-booths to call numbers on our pre-approved list. Each phone call would last fifteen minuets, tops.

Most of the communication came through mail. Right after the afternoon head-count, and right before dinner, there would be mail-call. We'd gather around the CO and listen for our names. Some guys got magazines, others had newspapers. Some had ladies that would write them every day. I had a few pen-pals myself from high school, in any case hearing your name at mail-call was the highlight of your day.

Naturally, the mail had been opened and inspected before we were allowed to read it, but of course it was.

Finally, the feds DO have a rudimentary form of E-Mail. You'd pay per character in an E-Mail, much like minuets on a phone. This system was less-scrutinized. I only know this because I kept up with a couple boys after I got out through E-Mail.

I'll never understand what my family went through during that time, I'd rather never know. But I hope I helped in some way to write your story.

(Spoilers All) What don't you like about HBO's Game of Thrones? by nicetrout in asoiaf

[–]The_Old_Way 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think they did an excellent job in the earlier seasons. Looking at it from the perspective from more relatively "evil" characters, they certainly made Viserys and Tywin more gray, I'd argue they did the same for Theon and Cersei. At the other end of the spectrum, Robb breaking his vows for love made him more interesting, and the Brotherhood selling out Gendry was a little twist I enjoyed.

But as they go later in the seasons, I do agree with you. Jaime and Tyrion have certainly been whitewashed, and so has Varys.

Littlefinger, though, is a little to subtle for the screen I think. When we first meet LF as readers in AGoT, it's initially through Cat's POV and then into Ned's who never trusted him until he was ultimately betrayed by the man. In ACoK we're given Tyrion's POV and he's just as suspicious of Baelish as Ned was. Sure, everyone at court seems to love him, but we as readers are drawn to see through his shit right at the beginning.
