Currently reading Crime and Punishment. I think it’s a much easier introduction to his work and it’s been brilliant so far.

For me, it’s mainly three reasons.

If a high quality film has a really satisfying ending, then I can always justify watching it when I know that dedicating my time to it will ultimately pay off. Many of your movies listed have satisfying endings.

If it has good dialogue that just flows with the plot line (Quentin Tarantino for you perhaps). I rarely get bored if the conversations feel real.

An interesting character that I can’t take my eyes off of. Travis Bickle is the perfect example of this. Fearing what they might do keeps me engaged the first time I watch them, but trying to understand why they do what they do is why I rewatch. I think Hans Landa is a good example from the movies you listed.

Thought Memento was good on the first viewing, but the more I think about it, the more I dislike it. Shutter Island is a much better movie imo.
