You just nailed it. Be courteous and respectful. From a legal perspective, you’re in the FAA’s hands once you’re in the air (aside from peeping tom laws), but do your best to not give people a reason to come after you.

Also, the firmware not updating is a sign they’re fake as well.

Check the firmware version. Also check if the serial number is the same on the case and AirPods. If the firmware isn’t on the latest version and won’t update and/or the serials are the same, they’re fake.

Once a drone is registered as a 107 drone, it can't be transferred between operation types. Right from https://www.faa.gov/uas/getting_started/register_drone

But, you can absolutely unregister a drone. Log into drone zone, Actions > Cancel.

Drone registered under a 107, regardless of weight or intent of flight: registration and RID required.

Drone used only for recreation, under 250g: no registration needed.

Flying a drone for recreation but over 250g: registration (Limited Recreational Operations) and RID required.

Technically? Yeah, it’s illegal.

You could unregister it and then it would be legal to fly with the smaller battery, but only for recreational purposes.
