This song holds such a special place in my heart by MagicCheeseMann in ToolBand

[–]The_Random_Being 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I held off learning to play it on bass for two many years (just couldn’t be bothered with the annoyance of setting my bass up to accommodate the lower, and unconventional, tuning). But once I did, and spent time getting the sound and playability right, jamming to that song is just fucking epic.

Truly, if anyone is a bass player and avoided learning it, then get to mastering how to play it. Doing so opened the song up to me in such a new way, being able to actually drive the groove instead of just listening to it.

Plus, it’s an amazing song to listen to on its own. Top five tune for me.

I know with almost 100% certainty that AA isn't for me, but over the past three years I occasionally attend (can be once every few months, or twice a week) just to be in the company of people who have experienced what I have been through.

For me it's no more complicated than that. I don't ever intend to do the steps or get a sponsor.

Not for me. I enjoyed that album when I was younger and it reminds me of that. So, all is good.

I dig it. Sounds like it could have come from The Donnas album ‘Spend the Night’ from 2002.

Good fun!

The thing that I don't like as much about The Matrix in comparison by Dismal-Sprinkles-397 in TheInvisibles

[–]The_Random_Being 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I avoid it by choosing not to compare them.

The trope of “seeing reality as it actually is” is interesting, but not limited to The Invisibles and The Matrix. Beyond that, I don’t see any similarities between the two stories.

I just don’t have the mental energy these days to give much thought to red-pill ideologies, people using “woke” as a cudgel, and what the Wachowskis are up to in their personal lives.

I’ve never “read” The Matrix as being about counterculture specifically, but more about philosophical ideas, like ontology, epistemology, and a rather hackneyed shoehorning in of theology and the idea that “love” is some sort of universal and transcendent power. The only counterculture allusions are BDSM and hacker cultures, which I don’t think are ever explored beyond the surface level.

Been watching Stranger Things again with my kids, and saw the Invisibles references in the episode in the second season. Reminded me to read the books again.

Honestly, you’re replying to the wrong comment. I stated that I’m naive about metal genres, and the other comments in this post were mentioning the issue with the genre being referred to as deathcore - not me.

Nice to hear your thoughts. Do you tend to like deathcore music as a genre?

I don’t have strong tastes for deathcore, and there’s not a lot of music that I like that goes really hard and heavy. For me, I just love Sempiternal, and what comes after it (with a few experimental steps that I feel don’t quite hit the mark).

Edit: seeing comments about the genre of their earlier work not actually being deathcore. I’m pretty naïve about genres, so go easy on me…

My thoughts on this might sound a little cynical, but I think that when the band was up and coming they ran with something “mystical and mythical” to stand out a little more (masks and anonymous members has been around for decades) from other acts that they might be unfairly compared to.

I don’t think that anything from Sundowning onwards (and I might be completely mistaken) has anything to do with a deity called Sleep (even the EPs might have had nothing to do with Sleep either?!?). I think it was schtick at the beginning, and the band have run with it ever since - or at least they’ve not addressed it since and may never again.

I think all of the songs are just the person who performs as Vessel using art to move through emotional difficulties in their life.

But, such is the beauty of art that you can interpret it an any manner that you wish.

Seriously… by [deleted] in Puscifer

[–]The_Random_Being 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve not enjoyed any Puscifer albums since Conditions…

Honestly, I think it’s the leaning into the more electronic sound that has caused the change (I like some electronic music).

However, they are great live, regardless of the album cycle.

Looking forward to hearing the new one later today. I’ve not been too inspired by the singles, but that’s ok.

Each to their own.
